PS5 vs PS4: What’s the Difference and Is Upgrading Worth It?

For most PS4 owners, the PS5 is a worthwhile upgrade if you want current-generation games, dramatically shorter loading screens, steadier performance, ray-traced effects, 4K/120Hz or VRR support, and DualSense features. Keeping a PS4 still makes sense when your backlog is your priority, you play on a 1080p screen, and your budget does not justify a new console.

PS5 vs PS4 at a glance

The PS5 is not simply a faster PS4. Its solid-state storage, newer CPU and GPU architecture, extra memory, and redesigned controller change how games are built and played. The PS4 remains useful because the PS5 plays the overwhelming majority of its library, but PS5-only releases and several technical features are unavailable on the older console.

The hardware gap and why it matters

PS4: capable 2013-era hardware

Sony’s 2019 specification manual lists the standard PS4 with an eight-core AMD Jaguar CPU, a Radeon-based GPU rated at 1.84 TFLOPS, 8GB of GDDR5 memory, and a 500GB or 1TB hard drive. Those components can still run thousands of games, but developers must design around a relatively slow mechanical disk, a lower-power CPU and less memory bandwidth.

PS5: faster processing and purpose-built storage

The PS5 uses an eight-core AMD Zen 2 CPU running up to 3.5GHz, an RDNA 2 GPU rated up to 10.3 TFLOPS with hardware ray-tracing acceleration, 16GB of GDDR6 memory at 448GB/s, and an 825GB custom SSD. Sony lists 5.5GB/s raw read bandwidth for that SSD. The combination gives developers more CPU headroom, higher graphics settings, faster asset streaming and more room for detailed game worlds.

The SSD is the practical change you feel most often. It removes the mechanical seek delays that made a PS4 load screen an expected part of travel, restarting or entering a level. A PS5 still loads some games, and the result varies with the title, but current-generation software can be built around rapid streaming instead of hiding every transition behind a long pause.

What the specification numbers do not promise

A PS5 GPU rated at up to 10.3 TFLOPS does not mean every game runs 5.6 times faster than its PS4 version. Games may target different resolutions, visual settings or frame rates, and some PS4 software receives only a modest benefit from the PS5’s extra power. Treat the specifications as an explanation for the console’s capability, not a guaranteed benchmark for every title.

How games feel different on PS5

Loading and fast travel

PS4 games installed on the PS5 internal SSD load more quickly than they do on a PS4 hard drive. Sony’s PS5 FAQ also cautions that backward-compatible PS4 games do not use the SSD’s full next-generation capabilities. A native PS5 game can be designed around that storage system and usually makes a larger difference than an older title simply copied to the SSD.

Resolution, image quality and ray tracing

Many cross-generation games offer a choice between a higher-resolution graphics mode and a performance mode that targets a higher frame rate. Some add ray-traced reflections, shadows or lighting on PS5. The exact choices belong to the individual game; there is no single PS5 setting that makes every title render at native 4K or 120 frames per second.

Ray tracing can improve lighting realism, but it may reduce the frame-rate target or resolution in a particular mode. If you prefer responsive controls, a 60fps performance mode may be more valuable than a ray-traced 30fps mode. Read the game’s mode descriptions rather than assuming that the console’s hardware forces one presentation.

Frame-rate stability

The PS5’s stronger CPU and GPU let developers target 60fps more often and hold a target more consistently. Sony describes Game Boost as giving PS4 games access to more power and says it can provide faster and smoother frame rates. Results vary by game and patch: some titles receive a clear improvement, while others remain limited by their original code or a fixed frame-rate cap.

3D Audio and asset streaming

PS5 games can use 3D Audio, faster asset streaming and higher-detail environments. Those are capabilities of the platform and game engine, not guarantees that every backward-compatible PS4 game will receive a new audio mix or visual overhaul.

PS5-only games and the end of cross-generation coverage

A PS4 can play its own catalogue and cross-generation releases made for both consoles. It cannot run a game built exclusively for PS5. If a particular upcoming or current release is your reason for upgrading, check its published platforms before buying; a PS5-only game is a hardware requirement, not a graphics option.

The PS5 also gives you access to the same broad PlayStation ecosystem. Sony Group’s FY25 SIE Business Segment Presentation reported 124 million monthly active users and more than 12,000 PlayStation Store games as of March 31, 2025. Those figures describe the wider ecosystem, not a performance comparison or a promise that every game runs on both consoles.

Backward compatibility: can you play PS4 games on PS5?

Yes, in practical terms. Sony’s 2020 PS5 FAQ said more than 99 percent of the 4,000-plus games available on PS4 would be playable on PS5. Sony’s current support guidance describes the majority of PS4 games as playable, while warning that a small number may lose functionality or show unexpected behavior. Store pages identify PS4-only titles when relevant.

Digital PS4 games

Sign in on the PS5 with the PlayStation account that owns your digital games. Eligible purchases appear in your Game Library and can be downloaded again. A digital licence is tied to the account, so signing in with a different account will not make another person’s purchases appear in your library.

PS4 discs

A PS5 with an Ultra HD Blu-ray drive can read a PS4 game disc. Insert the disc, install the game and leave the disc in the console whenever you play; the disc acts as the licence. PS4 discs cannot be used on the PS5 Digital Edition because that model has no optical drive.

Games with limitations

Most games work normally, but Sony notes that some may lose functionality or behave unexpectedly. Online services, peripherals, companion applications and game-specific features can be discontinued or unsupported even when the core game launches. Check the game’s current store or support listing if a particular title is essential to your decision.

PS4-to-PS5 upgrades and save data

How the upgrade licence works

An eligible PS4 game may offer a PS5 digital upgrade free, for a fee, or for a limited time. The publisher decides the offer; there is no universal upgrade rule. A disc-based upgrade requires a PS5 with a disc drive, because the PS4 disc must remain available to verify ownership. A PS4 disc cannot provide a disc-based upgrade on the Digital Edition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Look at the game’s store page on the PS5 before deleting the PS4 version. It should identify whether the PS5 version is included, discounted or sold separately. Some editions bundle both versions, while others require you to select the PS5 product manually.

Moving saves

Save transfer is also game-specific. A PS5 can receive PS4 saves over Wi-Fi, a direct LAN connection, compatible USB storage or PlayStation Plus cloud storage. The PS5 version of a game may or may not import a save created by the PS4 version; the developer determines that behavior. Keep the original save until you have opened the PS5 version and confirmed that your progress is present.

A safe migration sequence

  1. Update the PS4 and each game you intend to move, then sync trophies and saves while signed in to the correct account.
  2. On the PS5, sign in with that same account and install the latest system software.
  3. Choose a transfer method: console-to-console Wi-Fi or LAN, compatible USB storage, or PlayStation Plus cloud storage.
  4. Install the PS5 version only after checking its upgrade terms and required free storage.
  5. Launch the PS5 version, verify your save and downloadable content, and only then remove the PS4 installation or reset the old console.

PS5 disc model vs Digital Edition

Sony says the two PS5 models have identical performance apart from the Ultra HD Blu-ray drive. The choice is therefore about ownership and media, not frame rate or image quality.

Choose this model It fits when you… Important trade-off
PS5 with disc drive Own PS4 discs, buy used physical games, want 4K Blu-ray playback, or may use a disc-based PS5 upgrade Physical media requires storage space and the disc must be inserted to play; the drive is part of the purchase
PS5 Digital Edition Already have a completely digital library and are comfortable downloading every game PS4 discs cannot be used, physical resale and used-game buying are unavailable, and disc-based upgrades do not work

Count your existing discs before choosing. A lower-priced digital console is not a saving if replacing a disc library requires buying those games again.

Display, controller and audio differences

What your television can show

Sony’s PS5 specification lists 4K output at up to 120Hz, 8K output and VRR support. To use a 4K/120Hz mode, you need a compatible television or monitor, an HDMI 2.1 connection where required, and a game that offers that mode. VRR also depends on display compatibility and the game’s implementation. The console does not make a 1080p screen display 4K detail.

If you use a 1080p television, you can still benefit from faster loading, higher frame-rate modes where a game supports them, Game Boost and PS5-only releases. You simply will not see the full resolution and refresh-rate benefit until you replace the display.

DualSense versus DualShock 4

The DualSense controller adds haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. Sony describes those features, along with enhanced visuals, ultra-fast loading and 3D Audio, as capabilities PS5 games can use. Developers decide how strongly to apply them; not every game uses every effect.

A DualShock 4 works with supported PS4 games on PS5. PS5 games require a DualSense controller, so keeping an older controller does not eliminate the need to own a DualSense for new releases.

Headsets and 3D Audio

3D Audio is a PS5 platform capability that can improve positional cues with compatible headphones or speakers and a properly configured output. It is most relevant in games mixed for the feature. A PS4 headset may continue to work, but compatibility and available audio options depend on how it connects and on the game’s support.

What the upgrade costs beyond the console

The available data does not establish a current universal PS5 or PS4 street price, and prices vary by region, retailer, storage bundle and promotions. Make the comparison using your actual local prices rather than an old launch price.

Include these items in the total:

  • The PS5 model that matches your disc library.
  • Any second DualSense controller or replacement you need.
  • Additional SSD storage if your installed library outgrows the internal space.
  • A compatible 4K/120Hz or VRR display if you want those modes and do not already own one.
  • Paid PS5 upgrades or replacement digital purchases for games that do not include an upgrade.
  • Physical-game savings, resale value and used-disc availability if you choose the disc model.

Do not treat a discounted used PS4 as equivalent to a PS5: it may be the better short-term budget choice, but it cannot run PS5-only games or provide the new console’s storage and controller features.

When upgrading now makes sense

  • You want PS5-only games. This is the clearest reason; no setting or accessory makes those releases run on PS4.
  • Loading screens disrupt your play. The PS5 SSD is useful every time you launch, fast-travel or restart a compatible game.
  • You want a more consistent 60fps option. The hardware enables higher targets, although each game’s modes and patches decide the result.
  • You own a 4K/120Hz or VRR display. The PS5 can use capabilities your PS4 cannot provide in the same way.
  • You value ray tracing, 3D Audio or DualSense effects. These are game-dependent PS5 features rather than universal upgrades to every PS4 title.
  • Your PS4 is noisy, failing or unreliable. If repair or replacement approaches the cost of a PS5, the newer platform provides a longer runway.

When keeping the PS4 is the sensible choice

  • Your backlog is mostly PS4 games and they run acceptably. Backward compatibility removes the need to repurchase a working library immediately.
  • You use a 1080p display and do not need PS5-exclusive features. The visual difference may not justify a console and display purchase at the same time.
  • Your budget is tight. A discounted used PS4 and inexpensive physical games can deliver more short-term play for less money.
  • You own many PS4 discs but cannot buy the disc-model PS5. The Digital Edition would strand that physical library.
  • You are comfortable waiting. Cross-generation versions and price reductions may make a later upgrade better value, provided the games you want remain available on PS4.

A practical decision checklist

Answer these questions before placing an order:

  1. Which games will you play in the next year, and which of them require PS5?
  2. How many of your games are discs, and would you keep buying physical copies?
  3. Do you own a 4K/120Hz or VRR display, or would the upgrade also require a television purchase?
  4. Are long loading times, unstable frame rates or a failing PS4 genuinely affecting your play?
  5. Will you need paid upgrades, extra storage or a second controller?
  6. Would selling or retaining the PS4 provide useful value for local multiplayer or a second room?

If the answers point to PS5-only software, frequent loading frustration or a display you want to exploit, upgrade to the disc model or Digital Edition that matches your library. If they point to an acceptable PS4 backlog on a 1080p screen, keep the PS4 and revisit the decision when a specific game or hardware failure creates a concrete reason.

Bottom line: is PS5 worth upgrading from PS4?

For most owners, yes—provided the reason is more than a specification sheet. The PS5 delivers its clearest gains through the SSD’s shorter loading, stronger performance targets, newer visual features, PS5-only games and DualSense interaction. Its backward compatibility protects most of a PS4 library, but upgrades, saves and disc support have individual conditions.

Stay with PS4 when your existing games satisfy you, your display is 1080p, and spending on the newer console would force you to replace a physical library or buy features you will not use. The right choice is determined by the games you want, the discs you own, the display you have and the time you spend waiting—not by teraflops alone.
