Neither PS5 nor Xbox Series X|S has a documented, universal lead in account security or privacy. Both support stronger account sign-in and configurable player privacy. PS5 makes social privacy easier to scan through four named presets; Xbox stands out for explicitly explaining required versus optional console data and offering broad family controls. Those are differences in controls and clarity—not evidence that one platform has fewer account compromises or collects less personal information overall.
This comparison covers published US PlayStation, Xbox, and Microsoft controls, checked October 30, 2026. It is not a hands-on test. The right choice depends on whether your priority is account sign-in, control over player interactions, a child’s settings, or understanding platform data.

What does “stronger account security and privacy” mean here?
It helps to separate four different questions: can another person take over your account, what can other players see or do, what can a parent manage for a child, and what information the platform or game publishers receive. A setting that improves one of those areas does not necessarily change the others.
For example, hiding your online status affects social visibility; it does not turn off a console’s service data collection. Likewise, a passkey or two-step verification helps secure an online account, but it does not by itself determine what a game shares with its publisher. Sony and Microsoft describe different categories and controls, so their published descriptions do not support a direct ranking of total personal data collected.

Which console has stronger account sign-in protection?
Both platforms provide account-level options beyond relying on a password alone. Neither vendor’s published material establishes a lower compromise rate, so the practical priority is to secure the account you use and keep its recovery methods accessible.
PlayStation account options
PlayStation supports a passkey and, where appropriate, two-step verification (2SV) using an authenticator app or SMS. Sony’s 2SV instructions tell users to save their backup codes. Those codes matter if the normal verification method is unavailable; store them somewhere you can reach without relying on the console itself.
On PS5, start at Settings > Users and Accounts > Security to find account-related options. Sony also advises against scanning a QR code sent by another person as a sign-in prompt, and recommends signing out after using someone else’s console. See its account security guidance.
Microsoft account options
A Microsoft personal account supports a passkey and two-step verification using security contact methods or an authenticator. These are Microsoft-account sign-in controls, not the same thing as a local Xbox console sign-in or a setting that requires a code for purchases. Review the account’s security and recovery options through Microsoft’s passkey setup guidance and enable two-step verification if that fits your account setup.
When choosing between the platforms, do not treat the word “passkey” as proof of equal implementation or superior security. The available documentation confirms options on both accounts, not a comparative security result.
How do PS5 and Xbox controls affect what other players can see?
PS5 offers a named-profile approach; Xbox provides player-safety and privacy settings that can be managed alongside family controls. These settings govern social exposure and interactions, not every kind of information processed by the platform or a game.

PS5: choose a preset, then adjust details
Go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Privacy. Sony provides four presets: Social and Open, Team Player, Friend Focused, and Solo and Focused. You can choose a preset as a starting point or customize individual settings. Sony lists controls for real name and profile-picture exposure, online status, games, friend requests, parties, and messages. Its PS5 privacy guide describes what the presets change.
The preset labels make the broad social posture easier to understand, but review the individual controls if one specific exposure matters to you. For example, set the relevant visibility and contact options rather than assuming a general profile choice answers every question about what others can see.
Sony describes the Solo and Focused preset this way: “No player can see your profile information or invite you to chat, even if they are your friend.” That statement describes the preset’s social restrictions; it is not a claim that the account is invisible to PlayStation services or to every game.
Xbox: distinguish social settings from public game information
Xbox privacy and online-safety options control player interactions, while Microsoft’s privacy statement notes that some gamertag and leaderboard information is public. In particular, leaderboard scores cannot be hidden. A restrictive social setting therefore should not be read as a guarantee that all game-related information is private.

That does not make a child’s gamertag or every activity invisible. A game may also offer its own privacy or communication controls, separate from the console’s settings.
What data do the consoles collect, and can you turn it off?
Neither platform’s documentation supports a claim of zero data collection. The vendors use different categories, so the labels should not be converted into a simple “less data” verdict.

PlayStation: Limited Data and Full Data
Sony describes PS5 data choices as Limited Data and Full Data, while noting that some collection is necessary to provide services. Choosing a more restrictive social profile does not change that separate platform-data relationship. The available descriptions do not provide a directly comparable total-volume figure for PlayStation and Xbox.
Xbox: required and optional data
Microsoft distinguishes required diagnostic and service data from optional diagnostics. It says choosing whether to provide optional Xbox data does not prevent products and services from working as expected; it does not say that optional settings stop all collection. Microsoft’s console-data instructions place the optional diagnostic choice at Online safety & family > Privacy & online safety > Data collection. Menu wording can change, so use the labels currently shown on your console.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →In an October 2025 summary covering Xbox Series X and Series S, Microsoft estimated that an average Xbox console generates approximately 8 MB of data per day, with the exact volume varying by user. This is Microsoft’s figure, not an independent measurement, not a Sony comparison, and not a measure of what other players can see.
Games and apps can have separate data flows
Sony says it may share information with game publishers and other partners for stated purposes. Microsoft describes categories of Xbox data available to network-connected game or app publishers. As a result, a console privacy setting is not necessarily the same as a game’s own account, privacy, or consent setting. Check the individual game or app’s controls and privacy information when that distinction matters.
Which platform gives parents more control over a child account?
Both offer substantial family management. PlayStation documents control over child privacy, communication, content, and spending; Xbox covers privacy, contact, purchases, content, and screen time through its family features.
Set up family controls on PS5
- Open Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management.
- Select the child account and review its privacy and communication settings, content restrictions, and spending controls.
- Check which privacy settings the child is allowed to change. A family manager can control whether a child can alter those settings.
Use the PlayStation parental-controls and spending-limits guide for the account and console options. A child’s ability to receive messages or interact with others depends on the configured settings, so verify the specific communication controls rather than relying on age or profile visibility alone.

Set up family controls on Xbox
- Use the Xbox Family Settings app or Microsoft family management to manage a child’s settings.
- Review privacy and contact permissions, purchases, content access, and screen time.
- Confirm that the parent account is using the family-group feature, which Microsoft identifies as necessary for a parent to change a child’s Xbox privacy and online settings.
Microsoft’s Xbox family hub directs families to its family tools. Because app functionality and menu labels can change, confirm the available controls in the current app or account interface.
For either console, review communication limits and purchase permissions directly on the child account. A restrictive default is useful, but it is not a substitute for checking what that child can share, who can contact them, and which settings they can modify.
How do purchase protections and passkeys differ?
Account authentication and purchase confirmation are separate controls, and the word “passkey” is used for more than one feature. Check what a setting protects before assuming that two similarly named options work together.
Three different passkey concepts
- A PlayStation account passkey is an account sign-in option.
- A Microsoft account passkey is also an account sign-in option; Microsoft says it can be saved to a phone or a physical security key.
- An Xbox console purchase passkey is a console setting used to require a passkey for purchases.
These are not interchangeable labels. Microsoft’s account guidance does not establish that a USB FIDO2 security key directly authenticates on an Xbox console. Do not buy or configure a key on the assumption that it will serve as an Xbox-console sign-in method.

PS5 account and privacy checklist
- Open Settings > Users and Accounts > Security and choose an account sign-in method you can recover.
- If using 2SV, follow Sony’s setup and keep its backup codes somewhere safe.
- Open Settings > Users and Accounts > Privacy; choose a preset only as a starting point, and inspect the individual options for profile details, online status, games, requests, parties, and messages.
- For a child account, use Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management to review communication, content, spending, and which settings the child may change.
- When signing in on another person’s console, sign out afterward; do not scan sign-in QR codes supplied by someone else.
Xbox account and privacy checklist
- Secure the Microsoft account used for Xbox with its available sign-in and two-step verification options, and make sure recovery methods are current.
- Use the Xbox family tools or Microsoft family management for child privacy, contact permissions, purchases, content, and screen time.
- Review the console’s data-collection choice under Online safety & family > Privacy & online safety > Data collection, if that path is still displayed on your system.
- Set the Xbox console purchase-passkey requirement if you want that purchase check, separately from Microsoft-account sign-in.
- Review game-specific settings where needed; console controls do not necessarily govern the information or interactions inside a network-connected game.
Which should you choose for privacy?
Choose based on the control you value, not on an unsupported claim that one console is categorically safer. PS5 has the clearer documented route for quickly selecting a broad social-privacy posture; Xbox provides a prominent family-management framework and an explicit required-versus-optional data explanation. Neither distinction proves lower account-compromise risk or lower total data collection.
For a shared household, compare the actual child, communication, screen-time, purchase, and content controls you need. For an adult account, prioritize secure sign-in and recovery first, then adjust social visibility and review data settings separately. Finally, check the privacy controls of multiplayer games and apps you use: a console-level choice does not settle every in-game setting.

Can I hide my Xbox leaderboard scores?
Microsoft’s privacy information says leaderboard scores cannot be hidden. Other gamertag or leaderboard information may also be public, so a private-feeling social profile does not guarantee that competitive records disappear.
Does buying an Xbox game on disc stop the console from sending diagnostic data?
No. Microsoft says a retail disc purchase can avoid the required diagnostic event associated with buying that game through the Xbox Store, but it does not avoid all required Xbox data. It is a narrow purchase-related distinction, not a general data opt-out.
Can I require a password at PlayStation checkout if my account uses a passkey?
Sony says Require Password at Checkout is incompatible with a PlayStation account configured with passkeys. Review the current account and checkout settings before changing sign-in methods rather than assuming both protections can operate together.
