An unverified report says the PS6 could deliver about three times the base PS5’s rasterization performance and cost roughly $499. Sony has confirmed none of the rumored specifications, price or timing. And $499 is no longer the current U.S. price of a PS5: Sony’s recommended prices have been higher since April 2, 2026.
What the PS6 leak claims
The report, first attributed to a Moore’s Law Is Dead video, describes a possible next-generation PlayStation based on information said to come from an AMD presentation prepared for Sony in 2023. These are reported claims, not announced specifications. Engadget’s coverage of the leak summarizes the allegations:
| Rumored detail | Reported claim | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Graphics performance | About 3× the base PS5’s rasterization performance | Unverified |
| Comparison with PS5 Pro | About 2× its performance | Unverified; the reported metric is not a full system benchmark |
| Price | Approximately $499 | Unverified; model and included hardware are not established |
| Manufacturing | Could begin in mid-2027 | Unverified |
| Release window | Fall 2027 to early 2028 | Unverified |
| Backward compatibility | PS4 and PS5 games | Unverified |
The alleged presentation dates to 2023, so even if the document is genuine, it may reflect an earlier proposal rather than final hardware. The available coverage does not establish a public copy of the presentation, confirmation from Sony or AMD, or an independently replicated benchmark.

What “three times the performance” means
The reported comparison is specifically about rasterization performance: the conventional process of turning a 3D scene into the pixels shown on screen. It is narrower than “three times faster” in every aspect of a game. The report does not provide a standardized benchmark or enough detail to translate the estimate into a particular resolution, frame rate or visual setting.
- It does not promise three times the frame rate. A game may be capped at 30 or 60 frames per second, or limited by its CPU workload rather than its graphics processor.
- It does not establish three times the ray-tracing performance. Rasterization and ray tracing use hardware differently and can scale by different amounts.
- It says nothing by itself about CPU speed, loading times, storage capacity or memory bandwidth.
- It does not mean three times the visual quality or three times the native resolution. Resolution, image reconstruction, settings and developer choices all affect what players see.
- Upscaling and frame-generation techniques can alter apparent resolution or smoothness, but the leak does not specify how these would be used.
Real game performance also depends on architecture, clock speeds, compute units, memory, cache, software and optimization. A theoretical graphics gain can be larger or smaller in a particular game; it cannot be converted into a universal multiplier for the overall gaming experience.
How the claim compares with official PS5 Pro figures
Sony’s published PS5 Pro comparisons offer a useful reference, but they measure different things from the alleged PS6 rasterization estimate. Sony says PS5 Pro has 67% more compute units and 28% faster memory than the current PS5, and can render gameplay up to 45% faster. Sony also says its ray-tracing performance can be double, and sometimes triple, the current PS5’s speed. Sony’s PS5 Pro announcement describes those workload-specific gains and its PSSR upscaling technology.

| Comparison | What is being described | Source and status |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 Pro versus current PS5 | 67% more compute units; 28% faster memory; up to 45% faster gameplay rendering | Sony’s official figures |
| PS5 Pro ray tracing versus current PS5 | Double, and sometimes triple, the speed | Sony’s official claim for ray tracing |
| Rumored PS6 versus base PS5 | About 3× rasterization performance | Unverified leak |
| Rumored PS6 versus PS5 Pro | About 2× performance | Unverified leak; exact basis is not established |
These figures should not be combined into a single ranking or a teraflop estimate. Sony’s PS5 Pro figures distinguish rendering, memory and ray tracing; the leak’s reported PS6 comparison is tied to rasterization. Without confirmed specifications and matching tests, the numbers are not directly interchangeable.

The leak’s approximately $499 figure is unverified, and it is unclear whether it refers to a digital-only console or a disc model, what accessories or storage it would include, or whether it is a U.S. price before tax. The comparison appears to evoke the PS5 Digital Edition’s 2020 launch price, not today’s U.S. recommended pricing.
Effective April 2, 2026, Sony’s U.S. recommended prices are $649.99 for PS5, $599.99 for PS5 Digital Edition and $899.99 for PS5 Pro. Sony’s price-change announcement sets out those figures. Prices at retailers can differ, and these U.S. amounts should not be read as worldwide prices.

- 🚀 Storage: Custom 825GB SSD
- 🚀 RAM: 16GB GDDR6
- 🚀 GPU: 10.3 teraflop RDNA 2 GPU
That makes “same price” a historical comparison, not a current apples-to-apples one. A nominal $499 in a future year would also buy less than $499 did in 2020, while the leak does not explain what hardware configuration that price would cover or how Sony would price the console.
What launch timing and backward compatibility are being claimed?
Timing
The report alleges manufacturing could start in mid-2027 and the console could arrive between fall 2027 and early 2028. Those dates are not a Sony schedule. A reported manufacturing target can change, and the alleged 2023 source material is especially weak grounds for treating a future release window as settled.

The leak also claims the PS6 may support PS4 and PS5 games, but it does not establish how that support would work. Compatibility would not automatically guarantee that every game runs perfectly, that each title receives an enhancement patch, or that physical discs work on every model.

- Enjoy smooth and fluid high frame rate gameplay at up to 120 fps for compatible games, with support for 120Hz output on 4K displays.
- PS5 consoles support an 8K output, so you can play games on your 4320p resolution display.
- Maximize your play sessions with near-instant load times for installed PS5 games.
- 825GB SSD allows ultra-fast load times, while 3-D audio output produces crisp acoustics.
- Explore uncharted virtual territories and slay dragons with this sleek Sony PlayStation 5 gaming console.
Sony’s PS5 Pro materials illustrate why compatibility claims need detail: the console supports more than 8,500 PS4 games, while enhanced performance varies by title. Sony’s PS5 Pro overview describes its backward-compatibility and Game Boost features. That existing behavior is not proof of what a PS6 would support.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What could the performance claim mean for games?
If a future console delivered a large graphics increase and developers used it, the extra headroom could support higher-quality graphics at 60 frames per second, denser environments, more geometry and effects, or combinations of resolution, ray tracing and frame rate that are difficult on current hardware. Those are possibilities, not promised outcomes of this leak.
- A game locked to 30 frames per second may stay locked there unless its developers change or patch it.
- CPU-heavy simulation, open-world streaming, storage limits or poor optimization can constrain performance regardless of graphics capacity.
- Developers choose whether to spend extra headroom on higher frame rates, image quality, effects or other priorities.
- Backward-compatible games would not necessarily receive upgrades just because the new hardware can run them faster.
Sony’s PS5 Pro presentation frames performance as a combination of features such as 4K output, ray tracing, PSSR and compatible games’ 60–120 fps modes, rather than one universal multiplier. The official PS5 Pro page lists those supported features and qualifications.

The rumored PlayStation handheld is a separate, unconfirmed claim
The same report reportedly describes a handheld with a microSD slot, M.2 SSD slot, touchscreen, haptic vibration, dual microphones and USB-C video output, at a rumored $400–$500. These details are also unverified. The report does not establish that the handheld is a launch companion to PS6—or that it is part of the same product plan—so it should not be treated as confirmation of the console’s features or timing.
Should you buy a PS5 now or wait?
There is no confirmed PS6 product or launch date on which to base a short-term buying plan. Decide based on whether you want to play current games now and whether the existing console’s features and price suit you, not on a leak as if it were a release announcement.
Quick Recap
- Buy a PS5 if you want access to current PlayStation games now and do not want to wait on an uncertain successor. Compare the disc and digital versions against how you buy games and the current price available to you.
- Consider PS5 Pro if you have a suitable 4K or high-refresh-rate display and value improved image quality, ray tracing and higher frame-rate modes in games that support them. Its benefits vary by title.
- Wait if you are comfortable with an uncertain timeline and have no immediate need for a console. The rumored fall 2027–early 2028 window is not confirmed.
