Sony has not announced a PlayStation 6 release date or price. In May 2026, Sony president and CEO Hiroki Totoki said the company had not decided when to launch its next console or how much it would cost. Estimates mentioning 2027, 2028 or 2029 remain forecasts and attributed reporting, not commitments. If you are deciding whether to buy a PS5 now, weigh the games you want to play and your local budget against the uncertain timing and cost of a successor.
Has Sony announced the PS6 release date?
No. During Sony’s May 2026 financial-results Q&A, president and CEO Hiroki Totoki said: “We have not yet decided on at what timing we will launch the new console, or at what prices.” GameSpot’s May 8, 2026 account of the call also reported that Sony was monitoring elevated memory prices and expected supply constraints in FY2027 as it considered its plans. That context does not establish that the PS6 will be delayed or identify a launch year.
When is the PS6 coming out?
Sony has not confirmed a date. Estimates in Stuff’s August 21, 2026 roundup ranged from late 2027 to 2029. The article also recounted Bloomberg reporting that Sony was considering moving the successor to 2028 or 2029. These are outside estimates and attributed reporting, not a Sony announcement; the May 2026 Q&A left the timing undecided.
How much will the PS6 cost?
There is no announced PS6 price, so no reliable figure to use in a buy-or-wait budget. Current PS5 prices offer context for the cost of playing now, but they are not a basis for predicting the next console’s price.

Should you buy a PS5 now or wait for PS6?
There is no universally right answer: it depends on what you would gain by playing now, what a current console costs where you live, and how comfortable you are waiting without a confirmed successor date or price.
Buying a PS5 now may make sense if
- You want access to PS5 games soon and have titles you expect to play.
- A locally available PS5 model fits your budget at its current listed price.
- You would get meaningful use from a console while waiting for Sony to make further announcements.
Waiting may make sense if
- You are content with your current way of playing and would rather defer a major purchase.
- Spending on a PS5 now would strain your budget, especially at the U.S. prices reported for April 2026.
- You are willing to wait without knowing when PS6 will arrive, what it will cost, what games it will launch with, or what its compatibility policy will be.
Use the current console’s value to you—not an assumed PS6 launch year or price—as the deciding factor. Sony’s decision to keep timing and price open means neither a near-term launch nor a particular future price is established.

What does Sony’s PS5 sales figure tell buyers?
Sony reported 93.7 million cumulative PS5 hardware sell-in units as of March 31, 2026, in its FY26.1Q Supplemental Information, published August 6, 2026. Sell-in refers to units shipped into the market; it is not a count of individually verified active owners. The figure shows the scale of PS5 shipments, but it does not confirm a PS6 date, price, launch lineup or compatibility policy.
