“pthread.dll was not found” and “The program can’t start because pthread.dll is missing from your computer” usually mean that an application cannot find its own POSIX-threads runtime.
The safest fix is to identify the program that requested pthread.dll, then repair or reinstall that program from its official installer. Do not download a loose copy and place it in System32.

What pthread.dll is and why the error appears
pthread.dll is third-party runtime code associated with Pthreads-win32, an implementation of POSIX threads for Microsoft Windows. It is not a Windows system component, and Windows does not provide POSIX pthreads as a built-in feature.
Different applications may bundle, rename, rebuild, or redistribute this runtime. The filename is therefore not enough to identify one universal version. You may encounter:

pthread.dllpthreadVC2.dllpthreadVCE2.dllpthreadVSE2.dll- MinGW-w64’s
libwinpthread-1.dll
These files are not automatically interchangeable. A 32-bit application needs the matching 32-bit runtime, while a 64-bit application needs the compatible 64-bit build. A 64-bit copy of Windows can run 32-bit software, so your Windows architecture does not by itself tell you which DLL is required.
The error can occur because the file was deleted, quarantined, replaced with the wrong build, blocked by permissions, found in the wrong directory, or unable to load one of its own dependencies.
The 60-second answer
- Note the name of the application in the error window.
- Repair or reinstall that application using its official installer or launcher.
- If it is a Steam game, verify its installed files.
- Check Windows Security Protection history for a quarantined copy.
- Do not substitute
pthreadVC2.dllorlibwinpthread-1.dllforpthread.dll. - If the application still fails, check whether another copy earlier in
PATHis interfering. - Use SFC and DISM only when multiple Windows components or unrelated programs are also failing.
First identify the application that needs the DLL
The owning application is more important than the DLL filename.
Check the error window
Look at the title bar and the first sentence of the error. It may name a game, installer, development tool, launcher, or enterprise application. Write down the executable name if it appears.
Also ask what changed immediately before the error began:
- The application was updated or reinstalled
- A drive-cleaning utility removed files
- An antivirus product quarantined a file
- A backup was restored
- A program was moved to another drive
- A developer tool, compiler, or runtime was installed
- A new application was added to
PATH
If the error appears only when launching one program, repair that program first. If several unrelated applications fail, investigate Windows components, security software, and system-wide PATH entries.
Find the executable and its installation folder
If you can open a shortcut:
- Right-click the shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Read the Target path.
- Select Open File Location if available.
Look in the application’s own directory for pthread.dll or a similarly named runtime. Do not replace it yet. The name, location, file properties, and application architecture may be needed by the vendor’s support team.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the owning application
This is the most likely solution because the application’s installer knows which filename, architecture, ABI, and dependencies belong together.
Use Windows app repair when available
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu, or select the application and choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Launch the application again.
If Repair is unavailable or does not help, return to the same screen and select Reset only if you understand that it may remove application settings or local data.
Reinstall from the official source
- Back up the application’s documents, profiles, saves, or project files.
- Uninstall the affected program from Settings > Apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the application developer or your organization’s approved software portal.
- Install it to the intended location.
- Restart Windows again if the installer requests it.
- Launch the program using its normal shortcut.
If the program is distributed through a launcher, use the launcher’s repair function instead of copying a DLL manually.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsVerify a Steam game
For a Steam game:
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the affected game.
- Select Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish.
- Start the game from Steam.
A successful verification should restore files supplied by that game. If the game still reports the error, uninstall and reinstall the game or contact its developer. Do not copy a DLL from a different game.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus protection may remove an application DLL after an update or a false detection. Restore a file only when you can confirm that it came from the legitimate application installer.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open a detection related to the affected application.
- Confirm the original file path and detection details.
- If the file is unquestionably part of the legitimate application, choose Restore or Allow on device, depending on the available action.
- Repair or verify the application files again.
- Run a full scan before continuing to use the program.
If the path points to a temporary folder, an unknown download, or an unrelated location, do not restore the file. Remove the suspicious item and investigate the system instead.
Microsoft warns that restoring a genuinely malicious file can put the computer at risk. When in doubt, reinstall the application from its official source rather than restoring the quarantined copy.

Fix 3: Match the DLL architecture and ABI
A wrong DLL can produce errors such as:
- “The file is not intended or incompatible with the Windows version.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “The application was unable to start correctly.”
- “An error occurred while starting the pthread.dll.”
These messages do not prove one specific cause. The file may be the wrong architecture, corrupted, non-Windows code, or a valid DLL with a missing dependency.
Do not assume that these names are replacements for one another:
pthread.dllis not automaticallypthreadVC2.dll.pthreadVC2.dllis not automaticallylibwinpthread-1.dll.- A 32-bit DLL is not interchangeable with a 64-bit DLL.
Use the application’s installer or vendor package to obtain the correct file. The official Pthreads-win32 project has distributed different names and separate x86 and x64 builds across its releases, so a single version or file size cannot represent every copy in use.
To check whether an application is 32-bit or 64-bit, use the vendor’s documentation or inspect the executable with an approved application diagnostic tool. Do not decide based only on whether Windows is 64-bit.
Never manually copy a third-party DLL into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. Those folders contain Windows-managed components, and adding an unrelated runtime can create conflicts for other programs.
Fix 4: Check for a conflicting DLL in PATH
This is particularly important with GHC and other Haskell environments. A program can find a different pthread.dll earlier in its search path than the one intended by the application.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
sysdm.cpland press Enter. - Open the Advanced tab.
- Select Environment Variables.
- In both User variables and System variables, select
Path. - Select Edit.
- Review entries belonging to compilers, language environments, games, and older applications.
- Look for directories that contain another
pthread.dll. - Do not delete an entry until you know which program owns it.
- Move the unrelated entry lower, or remove it only according to that program’s documentation.
- Select OK on each dialog.
- Close and reopen the terminal or restart Windows.
Do not solve a PATH conflict by deleting random DLLs. If you cannot determine which copy belongs to which application, reinstall the affected development environment or ask its vendor for the supported search-path configuration.
Fix 5: Install a separate Microsoft runtime only when required
Some applications need a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime in addition to pthreads. Installing or repairing that runtime can help when the application documentation or diagnostic identifies a missing MSVC dependency.

Use Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable documentation to select the package required by the application. Install the architecture that matches the application, not simply the architecture of Windows. If the application is older, it may require an older runtime family that remains separate from newer packages.
After installation:
- Restart Windows.
- Repair or relaunch the affected application.
- If the error remains unchanged, return to repairing the application itself.
Fix 6: Repair broader Windows component corruption
SFC and DISM are appropriate when multiple unrelated applications show damaged Windows components, Windows features fail, or system repair symptoms began after a failed update. They are not expected to restore an ordinary application-owned pthread.dll.
First install pending Windows updates and restart the computer. Then:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, test again. If it reports that it could not repair some files, repeat the process after restarting and check Windows Update. If only one application still fails, repair or reinstall that application rather than repeatedly running SFC.
When manually comparing DISM and SFC results, hunting through component versions and repeating scans can be time-consuming. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what it finds before its full version performs repairs; it is optional, and reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when that program owns pthread.dll.
Fix 7: Update drivers only when diagnostics point to them
A display, storage, or chipset driver is not normally the owner of pthread.dll. Update drivers only if the application vendor identifies a driver dependency, Device Manager reports a related problem, or the failure began with a hardware-driver change.
To check Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category related to the reported hardware.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Note the provider, date, and version.
- Use Update Driver only with a driver supplied by Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Do not uninstall a device driver merely because pthread.dll is missing. That can create a second problem without restoring the application runtime.
Manually identifying stale drivers across many hardware categories is tedious and can lead to the wrong package. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show driver issues before its full version installs updates; it is optional, and it does not replace repairing the application that supplied pthread.dll.
Windows Features are not a replacement for pthread.dll
Do not turn Windows Features on at random to restore this file. pthread.dll is not supplied by a normal Windows optional feature.
If the application’s own documentation specifically requires a feature such as .NET Framework, enable only that named feature:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Select Turn Windows features on or off.
- Enable the feature documented by the application.
- Select OK.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Repair or relaunch the application.
If no documented feature is required, return to the application installer and its dependency documentation.
Why regsvr32 usually does not help
Do not run:
regsvr32 pthread.dll
Pthreads is a runtime library, not normally a COM component. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A missing registration entry point will produce another error and will not restore the application’s matching runtime.
Only use regsvr32 when the application vendor explicitly instructs you to register a specific DLL and provides the correct command, path, and architecture.
Avoid random DLL download sites
Downloading pthread.dll from an unofficial DLL site is risky because the file may contain malware, belong to a different application, have the wrong architecture, use a different ABI, or be missing its dependencies. Even a clean file may not fix the owning application.
Use these sources instead:
- The affected application’s official installer or repair feature
- The application’s official launcher
- Your organization’s approved software repository
- The official Pthreads-win32 project when a vendor specifically tells you to use that runtime
- Microsoft’s official runtime and Windows repair documentation

Check the application’s installation log and Windows Event Viewer. If necessary, ask the vendor to identify the dependency chain for the executable. A dependency of pthread.dll may be missing even when pthread.dll itself is present.
For a system-wide change that recently affected several programs, System Restore may be a fallback. It is not the first-line repair for one application’s missing runtime. If unknown files, repeated quarantines, or suspicious processes are involved, stop restoring DLLs and perform a malware investigation.
FAQ
Is pthread.dll part of Windows?
No. It is third-party runtime code associated with POSIX threads implementations for Windows.
Which program installed pthread.dll?
There is no universal owner. The application that displays the error, or the executable named in the error details, is the best starting point. GHC, Haskell tools, LilyPond, TIBCO iProcess, games, and other applications may distribute pthreads-related files.
Recommended Free Tools
Can I replace pthread.dll with pthreadVC2.dll?
Not automatically. The filename, ABI, compiler runtime, architecture, and application expectations must match.
Should I copy pthread.dll into System32?
No. Repair the owning application and let its installer place the file in the correct location.
Will Visual C++ Redistributable install pthread.dll?
Normally no. It may supply a separate MSVC dependency, but it is not a substitute for the application’s pthreads runtime.
Can SFC restore pthread.dll?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while pthread.dll is normally an application file.
Why does the error say “specified module not found” when the file exists?
The named DLL may be unable to load a dependency, or Windows may be selecting an incompatible copy from another directory or PATH entry.
Do I need regsvr32?
Usually no. pthread.dll is normally a runtime library, not a COM server that requires registration.
