Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallpython37.dll is a genuine Python 3.7 runtime file, but it is not a Windows system DLL. The safest fix is to identify the application named in the error and repair or reinstall that application with its matching 32-bit or 64-bit runtime.
What this file actually does
python37.dll contains the Python 3.7 runtime used by Windows applications built with or bundled around CPython. A normal Python installation keeps it beside python.exe; an embeddable Python package or frozen application may keep it inside the application’s private folder instead.

Programs that commonly depend on it include:
- Standalone Python 3.7 installations
- Conda and Anaconda environments
- Jupyter installations launched through Conda
- Electrum and similar desktop tools
- Game mod managers and vendor utilities
- Applications packaged with PyInstaller, cx_Freeze, Nuitka, or related tools
- Developer-built Windows programs embedding Python
Windows does not supply a system-supported Python installation, so python37.dll normally does not belong in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. Windows searches an application’s directory before system directories, which is why the correct copy usually stays beside the affected program.
Python 3.7.17 was the final Python 3.7 release and reached end of life on June 27, 2023. If the owning program supports a newer Python runtime, upgrading that program is preferable to installing an old runtime indefinitely.

Causes matched to symptoms
| Symptom | Likely cause | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| “python37.dll is missing” after an update | Incomplete update or deleted bundled file | Repair or verify the application |
Error appears after copying only an .exe |
The application’s private runtime was left behind | Restore the complete application folder |
| “LoadLibrary: The specified module could not be found” | The DLL or one of its dependencies is absent | Repair the app, then check Visual C++ |
0xc000007b after copying a DLL |
32-bit and 64-bit files are mixed | Reinstall the correct application build |
| Error follows an antivirus detection | The DLL was quarantined | Check Windows Security Protection history |
| Shortcut fails but direct launch works | Old shortcut, wrong “Start in” path, or stale install | Inspect and recreate the shortcut |
_MEI... appears in the error path |
A one-file Python app extracted to a temporary folder | Reinstall or update the packaged application |
| A newer Python is already installed | The application still expects Python 3.7 | Repair the application’s own runtime |
The wording “module could not be found” does not always mean python37.dll itself is missing. Windows may have found the file but failed to load a dependency required by it.
Fix the application that owns the file
This is the highest-probability repair for a game tool, launcher, utility, or packaged Python application.
1. Find the owning program
Read the full path in the error dialog. Look for a location such as:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- The game or utility’s installation directory
- A Python or Conda environment
- An application folder under
C:Program Files - A temporary
_MEI...directory - An old user profile or copied portable folder
If the dialog shows only the filename, right-click the program’s shortcut and select Properties. Check Target and Start in. The program beside that executable is the owner.
Do not assume that a copy found elsewhere on the disk is usable. It may belong to a different Python version, architecture, application, or Conda environment.
2. Repair or verify the installation
Use the repair method provided by the application:
- Close the failing program.
- Open Settings with Windows key + I.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu and choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
If there is no Repair option, run the application’s official installer and choose Repair or reinstall it over the existing installation.
For a game or launcher:
- Open the launcher.
- Select the game or tool.
- Open its settings or management menu.
- Choose Verify, Verify integrity of files, or Repair.
- Wait for the launcher to restore missing files.
- Start the program from the launcher.
If the application was extracted from a ZIP archive, extract the entire archive again to a new folder. Do not copy only the main executable. A bundled Python runtime can include several DLLs, configuration files, packages, and native dependencies.
Rank #2
A successful repair normally removes the missing-file dialog and lets the application reach its main window. If the message changes to a different missing DLL or to 0xc000007b, the original file may have been restored but another dependency or architecture mismatch remains.
Reinstall standalone Python 3.7 correctly
Use this path only when you installed Python directly and the failing command belongs to that installation.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Search for Python.
- Remove the damaged Python 3.7 installation if its installer cannot repair it.
- Obtain the matching official Python 3.7 Windows installer from the Python Software Foundation.
- Choose the same architecture as the application.
- Run the installer as administrator.
- Select Add Python to PATH only if you need command-line access.
- Complete the installation and test the program again.
The official Python 3.7.17 packages included separate x86 and x86-64 installers, as well as separate 32-bit and 64-bit embeddable packages. A 32-bit application needs the 32-bit runtime even on 64-bit Windows.
Installing current Python does not necessarily repair a program built specifically for Python 3.7. The application may load python37.dll from its own directory or use an explicit path instead of consulting PATH.

Repair Conda, Anaconda, and Jupyter environments
If the error appears when launching Jupyter, Conda, or another environment-specific tool, repair the environment named by the failing shortcut or command.
- Open Start and search for Anaconda Prompt or the relevant Conda prompt.
- Right-click it and choose Run as administrator if the environment is installed system-wide.
- Activate the environment used by the program.
- Reinstall or update the affected package through the environment’s normal package-management process.
- Launch the program again from that same environment.
If you are unsure which environment is being used, inspect the shortcut’s Target field and the program path in the error. Repairing a different Python installation will not fix a stale Conda environment.
Do not randomly copy python37.dll between environments. The runtime must match the rest of that environment, including its architecture and native dependencies.
Check 32-bit versus 64-bit architecture
Architecture mismatches are especially common after manually replacing a DLL.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A 32-bit program requires a 32-bit python37.dll. A 64-bit program requires a 64-bit copy. You cannot make the two interchangeable by renaming the file or placing it in another folder.
To check a running program:
- Open the application, if it starts far enough to appear.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Details.
- Right-click a column heading.
- Choose Select columns.
- Enable Platform, where available.
You can also check the application’s official installer or documentation. If the program is distributed in separate x86 and x64 builds, reinstall the build matching the application and its plugins.
If copying a file changes the error to 0xc000007b, stop copying DLLs. That message commonly indicates an invalid architecture or incompatible dependency. Reinstall the complete application instead.
Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may remove or quarantine a bundled DLL after an update or extraction.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand the event and check the file path and detection name.
- If the file belongs to a clean installation from the application publisher, reinstall the application from its official source.
- Restore or allow the file only after verifying that source and its signature.
Do not blindly disable antivirus protection. Repeated quarantine can indicate a false positive, a damaged installer, or an untrusted application. If a clean official installer triggers the detection, submit the file or detection details to the security vendor.
Repair Microsoft Visual C++ dependencies
The embedded Python distribution does not include the Microsoft C runtime. An application installer is responsible for supplying it, but an incomplete installation or system cleanup can leave the dependency damaged.
- Open Microsoft’s Latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads page.
- Install the architecture required by the application.
- On 64-bit Windows, install both x64 and x86 packages when you use both 64-bit and 32-bit applications.
- Restart Windows.
- Start the affected application again.
Installing the redistributable does not make a 32-bit python37.dll compatible with a 64-bit application. It only restores a possible dependency.
Repair Windows components
Use Windows repair commands when other Windows components are also failing, or when application repair has not helped. These commands normally cannot restore an application-private python37.dll.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command and wait for it to finish:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Run System File Checker separately:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows files. Neither is a normal replacement for a DLL shipped inside a game, Python application, or private vendor utility.
Repeatedly hunting through Windows components and rerunning SFC/DISM can make it difficult to see what changed. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what needs attention; its full version performs the repair, but reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when that application owns python37.dll.
Check drivers only when the error points to them
A graphics driver is not normally the owner of python37.dll, but a damaged application stack can expose several startup errors at once. Check drivers only if the program also reports display, chipset, audio, or device failures.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, or the relevant device category.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties and review the Device status message.
- Use Update driver, or download the correct driver from the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for stale drivers instead of making you identify versions manually; the full version installs updates, but a driver update will not replace a missing application-owned Python runtime.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Why regsvr32 is not the fix
Do not normally run:
regsvr32 python37.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs and controls that expose COM registration entry points, especially ActiveX components. The Python runtime is not normally registered that way. Registration will not restore missing files, repair a broken application package, or solve a missing dependency.
Manual copying is appropriate only for a developer deploying the exact matching runtime from a trusted Python distribution into an application directory. It is not a safe end-user repair method.
Avoid random DLL download sites
Do not download an isolated python37.dll from a random DLL repository and place it in System32 or SysWOW64. That approach can provide:
Best Value
- Malware or a tampered binary
- The wrong Python build
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- A file that does not match the application’s other dependencies
- A replacement that hides the real installation problem
Use the official installer for the affected application, the official Python Software Foundation distribution when you directly installed Python, the application launcher’s verification feature, and Microsoft’s official Visual C++ packages.
When to use System Restore
Use System Restore only when:
- The failure began after a recent installation or system change
- A suitable restore point predates the failure
- Application repair and reinstall have failed
- You understand that monitored program files, registry state, and system changes may be rolled back
To open it, press Windows key + R, enter rstrui.exe, and press Enter. Choose a restore point, select Scan for affected programs, and continue only if the listed rollback is acceptable.
FAQ
Is python37.dll part of Windows?
No. It is a Python 3.7 runtime DLL distributed with Python or with an application that embeds Python.
Should I put it in System32?
No. The correct copy normally belongs beside the owning application or inside its Python environment.
Will installing the newest Python fix the error?
Not necessarily. Software built for Python 3.7 may require its private matching runtime. Repair or upgrade the owning application first.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Why does the file exist but Windows still report it missing?
The copy may be in the wrong directory, may have the wrong architecture, or may depend on another missing runtime. Check the path in the error and repair the complete application.
Can I use a file from another Python installation?
Only as a developer-controlled deployment step when the version, architecture, build, and dependencies are known to match. It is not a general repair strategy.
What if the error names _MEI...?
That usually indicates a one-file Python application extracting bundled files temporarily. Reinstall or update the application rather than placing a permanent DLL in that temporary folder.
When should I contact the developer?
Contact the application developer after reinstalling from a clean official installer, checking quarantine, confirming architecture, and repairing the relevant Visual C++ runtime. Provide the complete error path and application version without sending an arbitrary DLL from an untrusted source.
