“The program can’t start because pywintypes22.dll is missing from your computer.” The file pywintypes22.dll belongs to an older Python Windows-extension installation, not to Windows itself.

Which fix applies to you

Use the first description that matches your situation:

  • One old application fails, but Windows works normally: repair or reinstall that application.
  • The error appeared after removing Python or an older program: reinstall the exact legacy component required by the parent application.
  • The message says “entry point not found”: suspect incompatible Python and Win32-extension versions.
  • The message says “specified module could not be found”: pywintypes22.dll may exist, but one of its dependencies is missing.
  • The application is 32-bit: it needs compatible 32-bit Python and Win32 components, even on 64-bit Windows.
  • Windows Security quarantined the file: verify the owning application before restoring anything.
  • Several Windows components are failing: use DISM and SFC, but do not expect them to restore this third-party DLL.
  • You downloaded the file from a DLL website: remove that copy and reinstall the parent application from its official source.

What pywintypes22.dll is

pywintypes22.dll is a historical Python Windows-extension DLL. The 22 suffix corresponds to Python 2.2, an obsolete Python release. Older Win32 extensions supplied Windows integration such as COM support and Pythonwin components.

Some historical Python installers placed PyWinTypes22.dll in the Windows system directory. That location does not make it a Microsoft or Windows system file. It was still associated with the Python installation or with an application that bundled Python.

Current Python and pywin32 installations do not normally create pywintypes22.dll. They use a suffix matching the interpreter version, such as pywintypes311.dll. Installing the latest Python or current pywin32 therefore does not automatically repair a Python 2.2 application.

There is no reliable universal publisher, size, checksum, or build description for every copy with this name. The important evidence is which program loaded it and where the file is expected to reside.

Fix 1: Repair the program that reports the error

This is the safest and most likely solution.

Find the affected application

  1. Read the complete error dialog and note the executable name, if shown.
  2. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  3. Select Details.
  4. If the failing program appears briefly, right-click it and choose Open file location.
  5. In File Explorer, right-click the executable and select Properties.
  6. Record the General, Details, and Digital Signatures information.
  7. Also note the full path. An application installed under its own folder is more useful evidence than a copy found in a random temporary directory.

If the error appears when Windows starts:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps and then Startup.
  3. Disable the related entry temporarily.
  4. Restart Windows and confirm whether the error stops.
  5. Identify the owning program in Task Manager, Installed apps, or the startup entry’s file location.

Repair or reinstall it

On Windows 11:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps and Installed apps.
  3. Find the application.
  4. Select the three-dot menu.
  5. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  6. Select Repair and wait for it to finish.
  7. Start the application again.

On Windows 10:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps and then Apps & features.
  3. Select the affected application.
  4. Choose Advanced options and then Repair, if available.

If Windows does not offer Repair:

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Select Programs and then Programs and Features.
  3. Right-click the application.
  4. Choose Change, Repair, or Modify, depending on what the installer provides.
  5. Restart Windows after the repair.

If repair fails, uninstall the application, restart the computer, and reinstall it using the original vendor installer or trusted installation media. Do not copy pywintypes22.dll into System32 as a substitute.

A launcher may have its own verification feature. Open the program’s official launcher, select the affected application, open its settings or management menu, and choose Verify, Repair, or Verify files. The exact wording varies by vendor. Reopen the program after verification completes.

If the program is genuinely Python 2.2-era software, use the exact Python and Win32-extension package documented by that application’s vendor. Do not install modern pywin32 into Python 2.2 and assume the ABI will match.

Fix 2: Check whether the file was quarantined

Antivirus software can remove an old DLL because obsolete binaries may be unsigned, uncommon, or vulnerable to abuse. Age alone does not prove that a file is malicious.

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Look for an event involving pywintypes22.dll, the affected application, or its installation folder.
  5. Expand the event and review the detected path.
  6. If the file came from a trusted, verified application installation, use Actions and choose Restore or Allow on device, if offered.
  7. Reinstall the parent application instead when the file’s origin is unclear.
  8. Run Scan options and choose Full scan.

Do not restore a copy found in a writable temporary folder, an email attachment, a pirated application, or an unknown download. If the file has no connection to installed software, scan the computer and remove it rather than placing it in a system directory.

Fix 3: Resolve a Python version or architecture mismatch

The error wording helps narrow the cause:

Message Likely cause
“is missing from your computer” The parent application or its legacy runtime is incomplete
“specified module could not be found” The DLL or one of its dependencies cannot be located
“specified procedure could not be found” Python and the Win32 extension do not match
“not designed to run on Windows” Corruption, invalid binary, or architecture mismatch
0xc000007b Often a 32-bit and 64-bit dependency conflict

A 32-bit application needs 32-bit dependencies even when Windows 11 or Windows 10 is 64-bit. Check the application’s documentation or executable properties before installing anything.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To inspect installed Python versions:

  1. Open Command Prompt.
  2. Run:
where python
py -0p
  1. Compare the listed interpreters with the Python version expected by the application.
  2. Check whether the application has its own python.exe inside its installation directory.

Multiple Python installations, virtual environments, Anaconda environments, and stale copies of pywintypesXX.dll or pythoncomXX.dll can cause collisions. Do not delete duplicates until you know which application owns them.

For a modern application that reports a current suffix, use the same python.exe that launches the application:

python -m pip install --upgrade --force-reinstall pywin32
python -m pywin32_postinstall -install

Run the second command from an elevated Command Prompt if the application requires system-wide COM or Windows-service integration:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click it.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Run the commands.

These commands are not a repair for pywintypes22.dll itself. They apply only when the affected application uses a compatible modern Python environment and reports a newer pywin32 filename.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 4: Check drivers only when the error points to a driver-dependent application

A driver update will not normally replace a Python extension DLL. It is relevant when the parent application also fails because of graphics, hardware, USB, scanner, or other device components.

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the device category associated with the application.
  4. Right-click the device and select Properties.
  5. Open the Driver tab and record the provider and version.
  6. Select Update Driver.
  7. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  8. Restart Windows if a driver is installed.

Prefer the hardware manufacturer’s supported driver or the application’s official support package. Do not use Device Manager to replace pywintypes22.dll.

When several devices have stale drivers, manually matching hardware models and driver packages can take time and still leave the wrong component untouched. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan to show which drivers are outdated; its full version performs the driver installation, but it is not a substitute for reinstalling the application that owns pywintypes22.dll.

Fix 5: Use Windows repair tools only for broader corruption

pywintypes22.dll is not a protected Windows component. SFC generally will not restore it. Use these tools when Windows itself shows corruption, other protected files fail, or updates and built-in applications are also malfunctioning.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for the operation to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Test the affected application again.

DISM repairs the Windows component store before SFC checks protected system files. Neither command is a replacement for the application’s original installer.

Why regsvr32 usually does not help

Do not run:

regsvr32 pywintypes22.dll

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. A Python extension DLL is loaded by Python and is not normally repaired by registering it.

If an application vendor specifically instructs you to register a separate COM component, use the vendor’s exact DLL path and registration instructions. A generic regsvr32 command for pywintypes22.dll can produce another error without fixing the missing dependency.

Fix 6: Check Windows Features and application prerequisites

Windows optional features are rarely the cause of this specific file error, but an old program may require a prerequisite documented by its vendor.

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Select Programs.
  3. Select Turn Windows features on or off.
  4. Review only the features named in the application’s documentation.
  5. Enable a documented feature, select OK, and restart if requested.

Do not enable random legacy features to make a DLL download work. If the program requires a runtime or Windows component, obtain it through the application’s official installer, the original vendor, or Microsoft.

If the legacy program still will not run

Python 2.2.3 is obsolete and no longer supported. Compatibility with current Windows versions is not assured.

Try these controlled steps:

  1. Reinstall the application in a clean folder outside temporary directories.
  2. Right-click its executable and select Properties.
  3. Open Compatibility.
  4. Select Run this program in compatibility mode for and test the Windows version recommended by the vendor.
  5. Select Run this program as an administrator only if the vendor requires it.
  6. Test the program with a new local Windows user profile.
  7. Check the executable and DLL paths for duplicate legacy Python installations.
  8. Contact the application’s vendor for a supported replacement or runtime package.

Avoid deleting old Python folders or registry entries until the owning application has been identified. Removing the wrong installation can create additional missing-DLL errors.

What not to do

  • Do not download pywintypes22.dll from a random DLL archive.
  • Do not copy an unverified file into C:WindowsSystem32.
  • Do not substitute pywintypes311.dll or another current file for the 22 version.
  • Do not assume a file in System32 is automatically a Windows component.
  • Do not restore an antivirus-quarantined file without checking its origin.
  • Do not use regsvr32 as a general DLL repair command.
  • Do not claim SFC can restore a third-party Python extension.

A downloaded DLL may contain malware, use the wrong architecture, target a different Python ABI, or depend on other files that are still absent. Reinstalling the parent application establishes a matching set of files and dependencies.

Evidence to collect before escalation

Record these details for the vendor or technician:

  • The complete error text
  • The application’s name and version
  • The executable’s full path
  • The Windows version and system architecture
  • Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit
  • The reported DLL path
  • Whether the error started after an uninstall, restore, antivirus event, or Python change
  • The result of where python and py -0p
  • Windows Security protection history
  • The file’s digital-signature status

This information distinguishes a missing file from a dependency failure, version collision, architecture mismatch, or suspicious copy.

FAQ

Is pywintypes22.dll part of Windows?

No. It is associated with Python 2.2-era Windows extensions and with the application that installed them. Some historical installers placed it in a Windows system directory, but that did not make it a Microsoft component.

Does the number 22 mean Python 2.2?

Yes. The suffix identifies the older Python major and minor version. Modern pywin32 uses names such as pywintypes311.dll for the corresponding interpreter version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which application installed my copy?

The filename alone cannot identify the program. Use the error’s executable name, the executable path, installed-app records, and the DLL’s location. Repair that application first.

Will installing the latest Python fix the error?

Usually not. A Python 2.2 application requires a compatible legacy environment. Current Python and pywin32 use different versioned DLL names and may not match the application’s expectations.

Should I register the DLL with regsvr32?

Normally no. Python loads this extension through its interpreter rather than through the general DLL registration mechanism.

Will SFC restore it?

Generally no. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while pywintypes22.dll is an application or Python-extension file. Use SFC and DISM only when there are separate signs of Windows corruption.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a copy in System32 malware?

Not necessarily. Some old installers placed the file there. Verify its relationship to trusted installed software, its path, and its digital signature before deciding whether to restore or remove it.
