Nappa is stronger than Raditz in Dragon Ball Z’s original Saiyan arc. The official story presents Nappa as an overwhelming threat to the same defenders who had defeated Raditz, and commonly listed guidebook-associated figures place Raditz at 1,500 and Nappa at 4,000. Those numbers come through a secondary compilation rather than a directly verified guidebook page, so the narrative evidence is the firmer basis for the answer.
The short answer: Nappa wins
There is no canonical Raditz-versus-Nappa fight, but every useful comparison in the Saiyan arc points in one direction. Nappa is the stronger fighter when both characters are judged in their original Dragon Ball Z appearances, before later games, transformations, or alternate continuities are considered.

The clearest evidence comes from the official account of the Saiyan invasion. Piccolo had overcome Raditz earlier in the story. When Nappa demonstrates his power, however, Piccolo reacts with shock: “I never thought…it would be so much…!” The official recap then describes Nappa defeating Earth’s defenders before Goku arrives. That is a direct narrative comparison, even though the two Saiyans never exchange blows.

Who Raditz is and what he accomplishes
Raditz begins the Saiyan storyline
Raditz is the Saiyan who arrives on Earth at the start of the arc. According to the official Weekly ☆ Character Showcase for Raditz, he reveals that Goku is a Saiyan and explains the connection between Goku’s past and the Saiyan race. His arrival changes the entire direction of the series: Goku is no longer simply an exceptionally talented martial artist, but a member of an alien warrior civilization.
Raditz also learns about the Dragon Balls and transmits that information to Vegeta and Nappa before his death. That detail matters for the comparison because it establishes Raditz as the advance contact for the later invasion, not the leader of the force that follows him.
Raditz’s battle on Earth
Raditz is dangerous enough to overpower Goku and force Goku to seek Piccolo’s help. The eventual victory requires cooperation between former enemies and a sacrifice by Goku. Piccolo’s special attack kills both Goku and Raditz, while Gohan’s sudden burst of hidden power creates the opening that makes the attack possible.

Raditz is defeated by a coordinated plan involving an unusual technique, a hostage situation and a last-second attack. The official story later treats Nappa as a threat that overwhelms the defenders in open combat.
Who Nappa is and why his entrance changes the scale
Nappa arrives after Earth has had time to prepare
Nappa reaches Earth with Vegeta after the defenders have had a year to train for the Saiyans’ arrival. The official chronology places this material in “Volume 18: The Saiyan Invasion” and “Volume 19: Earth vs. the Saiyans”. This timing gives Earth’s fighters more preparation than they had before Raditz appeared, making Nappa’s performance especially revealing.
Nappa’s opening attack includes Saibamen. These creatures test and pressure the defenders before Nappa himself enters the main battle. Once the Saibamen sequence ends, Nappa becomes the principal physical threat and proceeds through the defenders until Goku’s arrival.
The official portrayal of Nappa’s power
The official recap describes Piccolo as shocked by Nappa’s indomitable power after Piccolo had previously overcome Raditz. The wording is not an explicit numerical statement, and it does not say that Nappa is a particular multiple stronger. It does, however, establish a clear escalation: the warrior who helped defeat Raditz now recognizes Nappa as dramatically more powerful.

Nappa’s victories also occur against a group that has trained specifically for the invasion. The defenders are not caught entirely unaware, as they were when Raditz first appeared. Their preparation makes Nappa’s success a stronger piece of comparative evidence than a simple sequence in which an unprepared character loses.
The official character feature on Son Gohan during the Saiyan arc likewise places Gohan’s latent strength and his later defeat by Nappa within this invasion. It reinforces the arc’s presentation of Nappa as the enemy who turns the defenders’ preparation into a desperate struggle.
Power-level figures: 1,500 versus 4,000
A commonly cited set of guidebook-associated figures lists Raditz at 1,500 and Nappa at 4,000. Both values appear in the DBZ Warriors “Dragonball Power Levels” compilation, which attributes them to Daizenshuu or related guidebook material.

Those entries should be described accurately: they are secondary-source reports of guidebook-associated values. The original guidebook page and edition were not independently verified here, and the compilation does not establish a publication year in the surfaced material. Therefore, these numbers should not be presented as a directly checked quotation from the primary guidebook or as figures stated in the official story recap.

| Nappa | 4,000 | Secondary compilation attributed to Daizenshuu/guidebook material; original page not independently checked | Places Nappa substantially above Raditz in the commonly cited ranking |
If those reported values are used for a simple numerical comparison, 4,000 is about 2.67 times 1,500. That arithmetic is useful for showing the size of the gap represented by the list, but it should not be turned into an official statement that Nappa is exactly 2.67 times stronger. The source trail does not justify that level of precision, and Dragon Ball’s story does not stage a direct test between the two characters.
What the numerical gap can and cannot tell you
The two figures are useful as a shorthand for the commonly circulated ranking. They explain why fan discussions usually place Nappa comfortably above Raditz rather than treating the matchup as a close contest. They do not provide a complete combat simulation. A battle-power entry does not specify stamina, technique, intelligence, terrain, surprise or the condition of either fighter.
That distinction matters especially here because Raditz’s defeat depends on circumstances. Goku and Piccolo coordinate a plan, Gohan’s outburst interrupts Raditz, and Piccolo’s attack has to be timed precisely. Nappa’s showing is different: he is part of an invasion, has Saibamen available at the outset and fights a larger group of prepared defenders. The numbers support the direction of the comparison, while the story supplies the context.
Why the story evidence is stronger than a number list
Same arc, different threat level
Raditz and Nappa appear in the same broad storyline, so their portrayals can be compared without mixing eras. Raditz is the first Saiyan enemy and a major danger to Goku, Piccolo and Gohan. Nappa arrives later as part of a larger invasion and defeats the defenders after they have trained for him.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe official recap’s sequence is therefore important. It does not merely introduce Nappa as another Saiyan with a new name. It frames him as a substantial escalation from the threat Raditz represented. Piccolo’s reaction supplies the character-level confirmation that the audience is meant to understand this escalation.
Performance against the defenders
Raditz’s defeat depends on a carefully arranged attack. Goku and Piccolo must combine their efforts, and Goku gives his life to keep Raditz in position. Nappa, by contrast, fights through the defenders as an invading force and remains the dominant combatant until Goku appears.
This does not mean every circumstance of the two encounters is identical. Raditz fights a small group under unusual conditions, while Nappa has Vegeta present and uses Saibamen during the invasion. It does mean that Nappa’s demonstrated ability to withstand and defeat the prepared defenders is the more imposing performance.
Why preparation makes Nappa’s feats more persuasive
The year between the two encounters changes the meaning of the defenders’ losses. Before Raditz arrives, Goku’s allies do not know that Saiyans exist or that a stronger force is traveling toward Earth. Before Nappa arrives, they have time to train and organize around the warning Raditz provided. Nappa’s success therefore cannot be explained simply by total surprise.
Preparation is not a perfect controlled experiment. The fighters do not all have identical abilities, and the invasion includes more than one opponent. Still, it is a meaningful comparison point: the later Saiyan defeats a more informed and better-prepared group, which is exactly why the official chronology treats his arrival as an escalation.

Could Raditz beat Nappa?
In a fair, direct fight using their Saiyan-arc versions, Raditz would be the underdog. The commonly listed values favor Nappa by a wide margin, and the official narrative comparison points the same way. There is no canonical scene in which Raditz surprises Nappa, damages him or forces him to retreat.
What would have to change for Raditz to win?
A Raditz victory requires conditions that do not amount to a normal power comparison. Possible advantages would include an ambush, a hostage tactic, outside assistance, a battlefield trap or a version of Raditz taken from a non-canonical game or adaptation. Those are scenario changes, not evidence that Raditz is the stronger Saiyan.
Even in the original story, Raditz is most effective when he controls the circumstances. He uses his knowledge of Goku’s identity and the threat to Gohan to force Goku into a bad position. That tactical success explains how he creates such a crisis, but it does not overturn the later portrayal of Nappa’s superior combat power.
What if the numbers are disputed?
Disagreement over the guidebook attribution does not reverse the answer. If a reader sets the 1,500 and 4,000 figures aside entirely, the official story still presents Nappa as the stronger character. The numbers are supporting evidence, not the sole foundation of the conclusion.
Does Raditz’s intelligence give him a realistic path?
Raditz has useful information and makes effective use of fear, but those qualities are different from superior fighting strength. He identifies Goku’s emotional attachment to Gohan and uses it to control the first encounter. Nappa does not need that kind of leverage to dominate the invasion battle. If the question is who could devise a more convenient plan under unusual circumstances, Raditz has an argument; if it is who is stronger in a straight contest, Nappa remains the answer.
Strength depends on what you are measuring
“Stronger” can mean several different things in a Dragon Ball discussion. Separating them prevents arguments about one category from being mistaken for another.
- Stated battle power: the commonly listed guidebook-associated values favor Nappa, 4,000 to 1,500, subject to the sourcing caveat.
- On-screen or on-page combat performance: Nappa defeats the defenders during the invasion, while Raditz is defeated by Goku and Piccolo’s coordinated attack.
- Narrative threat: the official recap uses Piccolo’s shock to signal that Nappa represents a much greater danger.
- Tactical usefulness: Raditz successfully gathers intelligence, exposes Goku’s identity and sends the Dragon Ball information to Vegeta and Nappa. That makes him important to the plot, but usefulness is not the same as raw strength.
All three strength-focused measures—reported battle power, demonstrated fighting performance and narrative presentation—favor Nappa. Raditz’s greater importance as the inciting antagonist does not change that result.

How the Saiyan-arc chronology affects the comparison
Raditz is the warning
Raditz functions as the story’s warning that Goku’s world has changed. His arrival reveals the Saiyan connection, introduces the threat of more powerful warriors and gives Vegeta and Nappa the information they need to come to Earth. His defeat ends the first confrontation but creates the larger crisis.
Nappa is the invasion
Nappa represents the next stage of that crisis. He does not need to uncover Goku’s identity or negotiate for information; he arrives as part of the force that intends to exploit the Dragon Balls. The defenders know what is coming and train for it. The fact that Nappa still overwhelms them is why his introduction feels like a sharp increase in scale.
Why role should not be confused with rank
Raditz is indispensable to the plot because he starts the Saiyan storyline. He delivers exposition, forces Goku and Piccolo into an alliance and creates the reason for the year of preparation. Nappa is less important as an information source but more imposing as a combatant. A character can be the more memorable or consequential antagonist without being the stronger one.

Reading the characters in this order is essential. Comparing Raditz with later versions of Nappa from games, promotional material or alternate continuities would answer a different question. The verdict here applies to the original Saiyan arc and its associated story material.

For the numerical comparison, the DBZ Warriors power-level compilation is the surfaced secondary reference for the 1,500 and 4,000 entries. Because its underlying guidebook page and edition were not independently confirmed, it is best used as a reported reference rather than as the final authority on the original publication.
Frequently asked questions
Who is stronger, Raditz or Nappa?
Nappa is stronger. The official story presents Piccolo—who had helped defeat Raditz—as shocked by Nappa’s power, and Nappa defeats Earth’s defenders until Goku arrives. The commonly listed figures, 4,000 for Nappa and 1,500 for Raditz, agree with that portrayal.
What are Raditz’s and Nappa’s power levels?
The commonly circulated guidebook-associated values are 1,500 for Raditz and 4,000 for Nappa. They are listed by the DBZ Warriors compilation and attributed there to Daizenshuu or related guidebook material. Since the original guidebook page and edition were not independently checked, these should be labeled reported values rather than direct primary-source quotations.
Is Nappa exactly 2.67 times stronger?
The arithmetic ratio between 4,000 and 1,500 is approximately 2.67. That describes the gap represented by the reported list, not a confirmed official multiplier. The official recap gives a qualitative comparison—Piccolo’s shock and Nappa’s victories—not an exact ratio.
Did Raditz and Nappa ever fight?
No canonical scene shows them fighting each other. Raditz dies during the first encounter on Earth, while Nappa arrives later with Vegeta. The conclusion comes from their separate battles, the defenders’ reactions and the reported guidebook-associated ranking.
Could Raditz win with a surprise attack?
A surprise attack, hostage tactic or outside help could change a hypothetical scenario, but it would not demonstrate greater raw strength. Raditz is effective when he controls the circumstances surrounding Goku and Gohan. A fair fight with the characters as presented in the Saiyan arc still favors Nappa.
Does Raditz have any advantage over Nappa?
Raditz has an earlier introduction, more direct importance to the plot and a demonstrated ability to gather intelligence. He reveals Goku’s identity and sends Dragon Ball information to Vegeta and Nappa. Those are narrative and tactical advantages, not evidence that he is physically stronger.

Why does Nappa seem so much stronger than Raditz?
The story deliberately escalates the threat. Raditz is defeated by a coordinated attack before the defenders understand the Saiyan danger. Nappa arrives after a year of preparation and still defeats the defenders in an open invasion battle. Piccolo’s reaction explicitly marks that escalation for the audience.
Final verdict for debates
Nappa is stronger than Raditz in Dragon Ball Z’s Saiyan arc. The official story’s escalation, Piccolo’s shocked reaction and Nappa’s defeat of the prepared defenders all support that conclusion. The commonly listed 4,000-versus-1,500 figures point in the same direction, but their secondary attribution should be stated whenever they are used. Raditz can be argued as a cleverer opening antagonist or a more important catalyst for the plot; he cannot be established as the stronger fighter without changing the characters, the continuity or the rules of the hypothetical.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who is stronger, Raditz or Nappa?
Nappa is stronger in the original Saiyan arc. Piccolo’s shocked reaction and Nappa’s victories over the prepared defenders provide the clearest story evidence.
What are their commonly listed power levels?
A secondary compilation lists Raditz at 1,500 and Nappa at 4,000, attributing the figures to Daizenshuu or related guidebook material. The original guidebook page was not independently verified.
Is Nappa exactly 2.67 times stronger?
The ratio of 4,000 to 1,500 is about 2.67, but that is arithmetic from reported figures, not an official multiplier stated by the story.
Did Raditz and Nappa ever fight?
No. They do not have a canonical duel, so the verdict is based on separate battles, Piccolo’s reaction and the reported ranking.
Could Raditz beat Nappa with an ambush?
An ambush, hostage tactic or outside assistance could alter a hypothetical scenario, but it would not prove Raditz has greater raw power. In a fair fight, Nappa is favored.
