RAID: Shadow Legends Champion Rarity vs. Rank: What’s the Difference?

Rarity is a Champion category; Rank is its progression tier, controlling the level cap and rank-up requirements. Here’s how to tell them apart.

Rarity is a Champion’s category; Rank is its star-based progression tier. A Champion’s rarity does not determine its current Rank or level. Rank sets the Champion’s level cap and can be increased using same-Rank Champions or Chickens. Ascension is a separate system, shown with purple stars.

Rarity and Rank identify different things

System What it identifies How it appears What it affects
Rarity The Champion’s category: Common, Uncommon, Rare, Epic or Legendary. The rarity label and frame. Rarity is the category associated with the Champion. It does not show the Champion’s current Rank or level. Shards summon Champions, with possible rarities depending on shard type; check the in-game Summon screen’s information icon for current rates. Official Champions page
Rank The Champion’s progression tier, from Rank 1 through Rank 6. Rank stars. Sets the level ceiling and determines the same-Rank materials needed to rank up. Official Tavern guide

The categories and progression tiers are separate: a Champion’s Rarity does not tell you what Rank it currently has. The official Champions page also cautions that Legendaries are not always superior to less-rare Champions, so rarity alone is not a universal measure of which Champion is best to build.

How Rank changes the level cap

The official Tavern guide lists these maximum levels by Rank:

Rank Maximum level
Rank 1 10
Rank 2 20
Rank 3 30
Rank 4 40
Rank 5 50
Rank 6 60

Rank is therefore a progression limit, not another name for rarity. For example, a Champion’s rarity category does not itself indicate whether it is Rank 2 or Rank 5; Rank determines the maximum level available at that stage.

How to rank up a Champion

Rank up a Champion in the Tavern by sacrificing Champions or Chickens that match the target’s current Rank. The number of materials required equals the target’s current Rank; you can use a combination of Champions and Chickens.

  1. Select the Champion you want to rank up in the Tavern.
  2. Choose the required number of same-Rank Champions or Chickens as sacrifice materials. A Rank 2 target, for example, needs two Rank 2 materials.
  3. Complete the rank-up. The Champion’s Rank increases, and its level returns to 1.

The Rank increase raises the level ceiling according to the new tier. Rank also unlocks progression features: the Tavern guide says reaching Rank 4 unlocks the Ring accessory slot.

Rank stars are not Ascension stars

Ascension is separate from Rank. Ascension level is displayed with purple stars, is limited by the Champion’s Rank and requires Potions. Rank stars show the progression tier; purple Ascension stars show Ascension. Don’t count the purple stars as the Champion’s Rank.
