1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsversit.dll is a 32-bit application DLL described as “vCard and vCalendar support DLL for Win32.” It is not a normal Windows system file, so a missing versit.dll error usually means that an older program, most notably Palm Desktop or related Palm software, is damaged or incompletely installed.
The safest repair is to identify the application named in the error and repair or reinstall that application from its original installer, vendor media, or a reputable archive of the original package. Do not download versit.dll by itself and copy it into System32.

What versit.dll does
The file provides support for older vCard and vCalendar personal-data formats. Those formats were used for contacts, calendar entries and related exchange features.
Public file metadata identifies the DLL as:
| Property | Information |
|---|---|
| Description | vCard and vCalendar support DLL for Win32 |
| Type | Application DLL |
| Architecture | 32-bit/x86 |
| Common indexed version | 1.0.0.1 |
| Common indexed size | About 0.16 MB |
| Public association | Palm Desktop and related legacy software |
| Publisher metadata | Versit Consortium, associated with Apple Computer, AT&T, IBM and Siemens |
These version and publisher details come from public third-party metadata rather than a current Microsoft or vendor download package. The filename alone cannot prove which program installed your copy.

What the error means
You may see one of these messages:
- “The program can’t start because versit.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because versit.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting versit.dll.”
- “Error loading versit.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “versit.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
“Specified module could not be found” does not always mean that versit.dll itself is absent. It can also mean that a dependency required by the DLL or by the affected application is missing.
The exact executable that displays the message matters more than the filename. Note the program name, the full error text and when the message appears.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the affected application
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
This is the most likely fix because versit.dll belongs to application software rather than Windows.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFirst identify the parent program
- Read the title bar and full text of the error.
- Look for the program name in the window title.
- If the error appears during startup, open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Processes or Details.
- Look for the legacy program that starts immediately before the error.
- Right-click it and choose Open file location, if available.
- Record the executable name and its installation folder.
If the program is Palm Desktop, look for the original Palm Desktop installer or installation media. The precise Palm Desktop release that shipped with a particular copy of versit.dll is not established, so do not mix files from unrelated releases.
Use Windows app repair
For a program listed in Windows 11:
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if shown.
- Select Repair.
- Start the program again.
If the program does not appear in Installed apps, use the traditional Control Panel path:
- Press
Windows+R. - Enter
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Change, Repair or a similarly named option.
- Complete the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
A successful repair should start the application without the versit.dll message. If the error returns, continue with a complete reinstall.
Reinstall the complete application
- Back up any contacts, calendars or other data created by the program.
- Close the application and its background processes in Task Manager.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the three-dot menu for the affected program.
- Choose Uninstall.
- If it is not listed, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features and select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the original installer as an administrator. Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Install the application into its normal folder unless its documentation specifies another location.
- Restart Windows again.
- Test the application before restoring optional integrations or add-ons.
For traditional software, the definitive source should be the original vendor installer, purchased media or a carefully verified archival package of the complete application. There is no verified current official Microsoft package for versit.dll itself.
Do not replace only the DLL after reinstalling. The installer should place the correct private copy beside the executable and restore any related files and registry settings.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Security software may have removed or quarantined an old binary. This is possible, but it is not proof that the file was malicious.
Check Microsoft Defender history
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Under Current threats, select Protection history.
- Look for an entry mentioning the affected application or
versit.dll. - Expand the entry and read the detection details.
Only restore the file if you have verified that it came from the original application installer and that the application itself is trustworthy. Microsoft warns that restoring a malicious file can put the device at risk.
If the file was quarantined and its source is verified:
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- Choose Restore, if available.
- Restart the application.
- If Defender removes it again, do not keep restoring it. Reinstall the complete application and investigate the detection.
If the source cannot be verified, leave the file quarantined. Reinstall the parent application from a trusted source instead.
Fix 3: Reinstall the application rather than copying a DLL
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
A downloaded DLL can be the wrong version, wrong architecture or a modified binary. Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, the Windows folder or an arbitrary application directory can also create version conflicts.
Use this process instead:
- Identify the executable that requests
versit.dll. - Uninstall the associated application.
- Restart Windows.
- Scan the installer with Windows Security.
- Run the complete installer as administrator.
- Confirm that the DLL is placed by the installer in the application’s own directory.
- Start the application again.
An application-owned DLL should normally remain with that application. A 64-bit Windows installation can run many 32-bit applications, but the application still requires compatible 32-bit components. Installing a 64-bit file would not solve a 32-bit application’s problem.
Fix 4: Check for an architecture or dependency mismatch
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
The commonly indexed versit.dll is x86/32-bit. The operating system’s architecture does not determine the DLL architecture by itself. The executable that loads the file is what matters.
To check the application:
- Right-click the application shortcut.
- Select Open file location.
- Right-click the main executable.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Details and Compatibility tabs.
- Record the application name and version information.
- Check the vendor documentation for supported Windows versions and architecture.
Do not install Visual C++ Redistributable merely because the missing item ends in .dll. versit.dll is not identified as a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime file. Install a Microsoft runtime only when the application documentation or dependency diagnostics specifically identify a missing runtime, and match the runtime architecture to the application.
If the program is 32-bit, reinstall its complete 32-bit package. Do not combine a DLL from one release with executables from another.
A dependency diagnostic can help when the error says “specified module could not be found” even though versit.dll is visibly present. Use the diagnostic on the affected executable, not on random copies of the DLL. Look for a missing dependency, architecture mismatch or load failure, then repair that dependency through the application installer.
Fix 5: Install Windows updates and repair Windows components
Time needed: 20–45 minutes
This is a secondary fix. DISM and SFC repair Windows components and protected system files. They are unlikely to restore an application-owned versit.dll.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Install pending updates
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Check again until Windows reports that it is up to date.
- Test the affected application.
Run DISM, then SFC
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application.
Run DISM before SFC. If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and test again. If it cannot repair some files, repeat the process after DISM completes successfully and review the result before attempting another application reinstall.
Manually repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time when the real problem is an incomplete legacy-app installation. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what it identifies; its repair function is handled by the full version. Reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when that application owns versit.dll.
Fix 6: Check Windows Features only for a documented requirement
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
versit.dll is not established as a Windows feature. Do not enable random legacy components in the hope that Windows Features will recreate it.
If the affected program’s documentation specifically requires an optional Windows component:
- Press
Windows+R. - Enter:
optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Read the application documentation and select only the required feature.
- Select OK.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Test the application.
If no documented feature is required, close the dialog without changing anything.

Fix 7: Update or reinstall a related driver only when evidence points there
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
A driver is not the normal owner of versit.dll. Do not update unrelated drivers simply because the error appears after Windows starts.
Investigate drivers only if the application error began after a device installation or if Event Viewer identifies a device-related failure:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the device category connected with the affected application.
- Right-click the relevant device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Record the provider and version.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
If the problem began immediately after a driver update, open the same Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver, if available. Otherwise obtain the driver from the hardware manufacturer.
Hunting through Device Manager and checking dozens of driver versions manually is slow when the problem is unrelated. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify stale drivers; driver installation is handled by the full version. Use this only when the evidence points to a driver, not as a substitute for reinstalling the application that owns versit.dll.
Fix 8: Scan for malware or disk corruption
Time needed: 20 minutes to several hours
Use this path when multiple files disappear, applications become corrupted, or Windows Security reports suspicious activity.
Run a full scan
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Choose Full scan.
- Select Scan now.
- Follow the recommended action for any detection.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
For a deeper check, return to Scan options and choose Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Save open work first because Windows will restart.
If several unrelated files are corrupted, check the drive for errors and review Event Viewer:
Recommended Free Tools
- Right-click Start.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs > System.
- Look for recent disk or file-system errors.
- Back up important data before attempting repairs.
Fix 9: Use System Restore as a last resort
Time needed: 20–45 minutes
System Restore is appropriate only when a restore point predates the error and application repair, reinstall and security checks have not solved it.
- Press
Windows+R. - Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs, if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Let Windows restart.
- Test the application.
System Restore does not replace a reliable backup and may remove applications or drivers installed after the selected restore point.
Why regsvr32 usually does not apply
regsvr32 is used for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a universal command for installing or repairing every DLL.
There is no evidence that versit.dll is a COM or ActiveX component requiring registration. Do not run:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
regsvr32 versit.dll
as a routine fix.
If the application’s own documentation explicitly requires registration, use an elevated Command Prompt and the full path to the application’s copy:
regsvr32 "C:PathToApplicationversit.dll"
A message about a missing entry point, incompatible module or registration failure means this is the wrong repair path. Unregistering and re-registering the file will not rebuild a damaged application installation.
Palm Desktop on Windows 10 and Windows 11
Palm Desktop is the clearest public product association for versit.dll, but the exact release that installed a particular copy is not verified.
If Palm Desktop shows the error:
- Back up the Palm data folders before uninstalling anything.
- Check Settings > Apps > Installed apps for Palm Desktop.
- Try Repair or Change, if offered.
- If repair fails, uninstall it from Settings or Control Panel.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the same release from original media or a verified archival package.
- Run the installer as administrator.
- Test Palm Desktop before restoring data or adding synchronization software.
- If the installer fails, right-click it, select Properties > Compatibility, and use the compatibility troubleshooter or a documented compatibility mode.
- Do not copy
versit.dllfrom another Palm release.
Legacy packages may not be fully compatible with current Windows versions. Compatibility mode can help an installer start, but it does not guarantee that synchronization, drivers or every application feature will work.

When reinstalling does not fix the error
Collect these details before escalating:
- Exact error text
- Affected executable name
- Full path to that executable
- Application name and version
- Windows 10 or Windows 11 build
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
- When the error appears
- Antivirus detection and quarantine history
- Whether
versit.dllexists beside the executable - Any dependency or loader diagnostic result
- Whether more than one copy of the application is installed
If the message returns after reinstalling, confirm that the shortcut launches the newly installed executable. Check for duplicate application folders, a stale shortcut, antivirus removal after installation and missing dependencies. Do not overwrite files blindly.
If the application is no longer needed, uninstall the parent application rather than deleting versit.dll manually.
FAQ
Is versit.dll part of Windows?
Treat it as a third-party application DLL, not a protected Windows component. Windows repair commands are therefore secondary to repairing the application that requests it.
Is Palm Desktop the only program that uses it?
Palm Desktop is the strongest public association, but the filename alone cannot identify every program that may use a copy.
Do I need a 64-bit version?
The commonly indexed file is 32-bit. A 32-bit application normally needs its compatible 32-bit DLL and dependencies, even on 64-bit Windows.
Should I install Visual C++ Redistributable?
Not automatically. Install it only if the affected application or dependency analysis specifically identifies a missing Microsoft runtime.
Should I register versit.dll?
Usually no. There is no evidence that it requires COM registration. Reinstall the parent application instead.
Can I copy the file into System32?
No. That can introduce an untrusted or incompatible binary and still leave the damaged application unrepaired.
