In a 2021 interview with GamesBeat, Pitchford recalled that Sir Hammerlock was introduced in Borderlands 2. The game briefly referred to an old boyfriend, a line Pitchford credited to writer Anthony Burch. He said the reference was included without being singled out as an announcement or special plot point. Wainwright Jakobs and the wedding
In Borderlands 3, Hammerlock is in a relationship with Wainwright Jakobs. Pitchford recalled that an end-credit image showed a marriage proposal. The team later connected the wedding idea to a horror story, developing it into Borderlands 3: Guns, Love, and Tentacles, an expansion released in March 2020, according to GamesBeat. The wedding storyline is in the expansion; the cited account does not establish that the base game alone includes it.
Pitchford’s stated approach to the story
Pitchford said the writers should follow what makes sense for the characters rather than impose an outside agenda. “We didn’t do it to take a stand, honestly,” he told GamesBeat. He also said, “As storytellers, what we need to do is respect where these characters would lead themselves and let that happen.”

Those remarks describe Pitchford’s view of the creative process, not a definitive interpretation of the story. Players and critics can assess the representation and its impact independently of the intention he described.
What Pitchford said about Gearbox and advocacy
In the same interview, Pitchford described Gearbox as a diverse creative environment and said the company had LGBTQ+ and other diversity groups. He said these groups gave employees ways to raise issues and suggest changes. This is his account in a 2021 interview; it does not verify Gearbox’s current organizational structure or policies. Pitchford added, “So I want us to always be careful to be a safe place for people that are a little different.”

Pitchford also recounted involvement in efforts opposing proposed Texas “bathroom bills,” including meeting a local representative. The interview’s introduction says the bill did not pass. This is a retrospective account of advocacy around that proposal, not an update on Texas law or a statement of current company policy.
Earlier public engagement with LGBTQ+ gaming events
In June 2014, GameSpot reported that Gearbox planned an inclusivity panel at GaymerX2 for July, featuring Pitchford and other developers. The report also said attendees could play the then-unreleased Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel.
