If Windows says “rasplap.dll is missing,” “rasplap.dll was not found,” or “rasplap.dll could not be loaded,” the problem is usually a damaged Windows component. rasplap.dll is not a game runtime or ordinary application DLL: it is Microsoft’s RAS PLAP Credential Provider, used for network access before Windows finishes signing you in.
The safest repair is to use Windows servicing tools, not to download a replacement DLL. Work through the fixes below in order.

What is rasplap.dll?
rasplap.dll is part of Windows’ credential-provider system. RAS means Remote Access Service, while PLAP means Pre-Logon Access Provider. Microsoft describes PLAP providers as the mechanism that allows a computer to connect to a network before a user completes local Windows logon. This can matter for enterprise VPN or other network authentication workflows. Microsoft explains credential providers and pre-logon access.

The file is associated with:
- Description: RAS PLAP Credential Provider
- Company: Microsoft Corporation
- Product: Microsoft Windows Operating System
- Role: Windows pre-logon network credential provider
It normally belongs in one of these locations:
C:WindowsSystem32rasplap.dll
C:WindowsSysWOW64rasplap.dll
On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains native 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files. The names are historical and often confusing. Do not copy a file from one folder to the other simply because the filename matches.

The exact file version and size depend on your Windows release and servicing level. A file from an older Windows installation is not automatically a safe replacement for the copy currently required by your system.
Why does the error appear at startup or sign-in?
Because rasplap.dll is involved in Windows authentication and pre-logon networking, its errors can appear during:
- Startup
- The Windows sign-in screen
- A corporate VPN sign-in
- A network connection made before interactive logon
- Windows recovery or servicing operations
It is not normally a dependency for launching a game, installing Visual C++, or running DirectX. Reinstalling those runtimes is therefore unlikely to repair this specific Windows component.

Fix 1: Install pending Windows updates
A failed or incomplete update can damage the component store or leave protected system files in an inconsistent state.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install everything offered.
- Restart, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Check for updates again after restarting.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Choose Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install the available updates.
- Restart Windows.
Try the sign-in or network operation that produced the error. If the message returns, continue with the repair commands below.
On supported Windows 11 installations, you may also see Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now. This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving personal files, applications, and settings. The wording can vary by Windows build.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the most important repair for a missing or corrupted copy of rasplap.dll. Run DISM first, then SFC.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish. It may appear to pause at a percentage for some time.
- When DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart the computer.
DISM repairs the Windows component source that SFC uses. SFC then scans protected system files and replaces corrupted copies. Microsoft’s repair procedure specifically places DISM before SFC.
A successful repair usually produces one of these outcomes:

Running DISM and SFC repeatedly without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting difficult. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the damaged areas and show what needs attention; its repair functions are handled by the full version, but it is not required, and Windows servicing remains the proper first fix.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Windows Security may have quarantined the file after a detection, but a missing filename alone does not prove that the quarantined item was safe.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Click Windows Security.
- Choose Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections for the date and time when the error began.
- Expand the relevant item and inspect its path, detection name, and action.
On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history.
Only consider restoring a quarantined file if you can verify that it is the genuine Microsoft copy, is in the expected Windows directory, and has a valid Microsoft digital signature. Do not disable antivirus protection merely because Windows reports a missing DLL. Microsoft warns that restoring a detected file can reintroduce a genuine threat. Microsoft’s Protection History guidance.
If you are uncertain, leave the item quarantined and repair Windows with Windows Update, DISM, or SFC instead.
Fix 4: Verify the file’s location and signature
If a copy exists, check whether it is in a normal system directory.
- Open File Explorer.
- Enter
%windir%System32in the address bar. - Search for
rasplap.dll. - If you use 64-bit Windows, also check
%windir%SysWOW64. - Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the signature and click Details.
A genuine system copy should be associated with Microsoft and should not be sitting in a game folder, Downloads, a temporary directory, or an unrelated application folder. A suspicious location does not automatically prove malware, but it warrants a full Windows Security scan.
Do not rely on a version number or file size alone. Windows updates can change both, and a matching filename is not evidence that a file belongs to your Windows installation.
Fix 5: Update or reinstall relevant drivers
Drivers are not the normal owner of rasplap.dll, but a failed network, VPN, or system update can cause related pre-logon behavior to fail. Update the network adapter and any enterprise VPN software only from trusted sources.
Update a network driver through Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Right-click the affected adapter.
- Choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
If the issue began immediately after a driver update:
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Right-click the adapter and choose Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver if the option is available.
- Restart Windows.
Do not remove an adapter unless you have a driver available and understand how Windows will reinstall it. If the error occurs only during a company VPN sign-in, ask the administrator to verify that VPN client’s pre-logon component rather than assuming the VPN owns rasplap.dll.
Manually checking every adapter and comparing driver versions is time-consuming, especially after a major Windows update. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify what needs updating; driver installation is handled by the full version, and the tool is optional.
Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is appropriate when the error started immediately after an update, driver installation, cleanup utility, or configuration change.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Choose a different restore point if available.
- Pick a restore point created before the error began.
- Click Next > Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system files, drivers, and settings. It does not normally remove personal documents and photos, but applications or updates installed after the restore point may be affected. Microsoft’s recovery options explain which recovery method fits each situation.

Fix 7: Repair Windows in place
If DISM, SFC, Windows Update, and System Restore do not resolve the problem, use an in-place repair installation.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Should you download rasplap.dll?
No. There is no legitimate standalone rasplap.dll redistributable for ordinary users.
Random DLL download sites sites can provide:
- A modified or malware-infected file
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- A copy from the wrong Windows release
- A file with an incompatible servicing level
- A replacement that does not repair the underlying component store
Copying the DLL into an application folder can also hide the real problem while introducing a second failure. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, or official Windows installation media instead.
Does regsvr32 repair rasplap.dll?
Not normally. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft documents it as a registration utility, not as a general DLL repair command. Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation.
Although rasplap.dll exposes credential-provider-related exports, available documentation does not establish manually registering it as a supported repair procedure. Running:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsregsvr32 rasplap.dll
may produce an entry-point or registration error and is not the recommended solution for a missing or corrupted Windows component.
FAQ
Is rasplap.dll malware?
The genuine file is a Microsoft Windows component. Malware can use the same filename, however, so check its path, Microsoft digital signature, and Windows Security detection details before restoring or trusting a copy.
Is rasplap.dll part of a VPN?
rasplap.dll itself is Microsoft’s RAS PLAP provider. A VPN or enterprise sign-in product may use the Windows pre-logon framework or install an additional credential provider, but that does not make Microsoft’s file a VPN vendor’s DLL.
Why does Windows say the file is “not designed to run on Windows”?
That wording generally indicates that Windows could not load the file correctly. Possible causes include corruption, an incomplete update, an incompatible replacement, or a damaged component store. Run DISM followed by SFC rather than downloading another copy.
Do I need to enable a Windows Feature?
Usually no. rasplap.dll is part of Windows’ credential-provider infrastructure, not a feature that should be repaired by toggling random entries in Turn Windows features on or off. If the issue is limited to a corporate VPN, the administrator should check the VPN client’s supported pre-logon configuration.
What if only one Windows account sees the error?
Test with a new local administrator profile. If the error disappears there, investigate profile-specific startup entries, credential-provider settings, or security software. Still run DISM and SFC because a profile-specific symptom does not prove that the system file is healthy.
What if the error started after cleanup or migration?
Run DISM and SFC first. If the problem began after cloning, upgrading, or migrating Windows and persists after servicing repair, use an in-place repair installation from official Microsoft media.
