Ray Gunn is the closest Brad Bird has come to making a “grown-up Pixar movie,” but it is not a Pixar production. Produced by Skydance Animation for Netflix, this 1940s-inspired science-fiction noir puts hard-boiled detective Raymond Gunn in an alternate 1939 future of flying cars, jetpacks and skyscrapers. Bird’s pitch—“The Maltese Falcon meets Buck Rogers”—captures the appeal: classic detective fiction, optimistic retro-futurism and animation on a very large scale. Early festival reviews praise its world-building, choreography and lighting, while warning that the 119-minute film can feel dense. It is aimed at teenagers and adults rather than small children, with murder, corruption, celebrity culture, automation and discrimination against aliens at the center of its story.
What is Ray Gunn about?
Raymond Gunn is a small-time private eye in Metropia, a gigantic city imagined as an alternate future from 1939. Detective work is increasingly automated by insect-like surveillance robots, leaving Ray and his one-eyed alien partner, Eyera, to operate on the margins. Their latest case begins as protection work for multimedia celebrity Venus Nova and expands into a murder investigation involving her husband, a corporate power structure and a city-wide conspiracy.

The setting treats its retro technology seriously. Streamlined Art Deco towers, elevated trains, flying cars and jetpacks create an optimistic future that still has the social anxieties of classic noir. TheWrap’s festival review describes the opening descent from a glittering skyline to an alien cleaning crew, making class division and second-class citizenship part of the film’s visual introduction rather than background exposition.
Bird has described the film as “a blend of sci-fi and classic detective movies from the ’40s.” That means moral compromise, suspicious clients, celebrity scandal and corruption sit alongside futuristic machinery and alien characters.

Is Ray Gunn the grown-up Pixar movie Brad Bird always wanted to make?
It is a useful shorthand for the film’s ambition, not a literal label. Bird deliberately avoided pitching the project at Pixar because he wanted to reach an older audience. Netflix’s presentation of the film similarly frames it as an argument against treating animation as a medium only for children. Ray Gunn is made by Skydance Animation and distributed by Netflix, not Pixar.
The “grown-up” description refers mainly to tone and subject matter. The film uses noir dialogue and plotting while examining automation replacing human work, celebrity as performance, unequal treatment of aliens and the power of corporations. Bird said at the Ottawa International Animation Festival, “If you’re a teenager, I think you’ll like it, but it’s not for five-year-olds.” RogerEbert.com lists the film as PG, so it is not positioned as adult-only animation; it is better understood as a teen-and-up adventure with mature ideas.

Does Ray Gunn look hand-drawn or computer animated?
The project began in the 1990s as a traditionally hand-drawn feature, but the released film was made with computer-animation teams in Spain, Canada and Connecticut. Its CG imagery is designed to behave like photographed noir rather than generic glossy animation.
According to Cartoon Brew’s production account, the filmmakers used Roman Polanski’s Chinatown as a touchstone, pushed toward a 28mm lens and drew on 70mm photography. Bird also requested visible ceilings and low-angle compositions inspired by The Maltese Falcon. Lighting was treated as narrative structure; Cinesite visual-effects supervisor Adel Abada described it as “a storytelling tool just like animation.”
| Production detail | Reported figure |

Bird also describes a continuous entourage shot in which Venus speaks with her manager while makeup artists and Ray move around her; he says that shot required roughly a month and a half of animator work. Other highlighted set pieces include a zero-gravity dance and an elevator fight.

What themes does Ray Gunn explore?
- Automation and work: Machine investigators are replacing human detectives, making Ray’s profession an example of a broader economic shift.
- Class and citizenship: The city’s aliens are treated as second-class residents, tying the science-fiction premise to immigration-style exclusion and unequal access to power.
- Celebrity performance: Venus’s public scandals and private danger show how entertainment, publicity and exploitation overlap.
- Noir morality: Clients conceal motives, institutions protect themselves and solving a case does not guarantee a clean victory.
- Optimistic futurism: The technology is wondrous even when the society using it is unjust, preserving the hopeful visual language of prewar futurism.
Is Ray Gunn worth watching?
Early festival reactions suggest a strong recommendation for viewers who value visual invention and ambitious animation. TheWrap called it “a visually stunning, thematically rich masterpiece,” praising its choreography, lighting and world-building. RogerEbert.com likewise highlighted the action and design while cautioning that the length and abundance of ideas can become overwhelming.

Is Ray Gunn based on a comic, novel or existing detective character?
The film is based on an original story by Brad Bird, with Matthew Robbins co-writing the screenplay. Raymond Gunn is not presented as an adaptation of an established literary detective.
Why was Ray Gunn in development for so long?
Bird conceived the idea in the early 1990s after confusing the B-52’s “Planet Claire” with Henry Mancini’s “Peter Gunn” theme. The project remained dormant through work on several other films and moved from Warner Bros. to Skydance Animation before production began.
