Rayman Legends Retold is a remake of Rayman Legends, not a renamed version of the Nintendo Switch Definitive Edition. Ubisoft says the remake reworks the hand-drawn presentation and stages, expands cooperative play, adds or revises options, and introduces Kung Foot Evo. The original game’s musical platforming, local multiplayer and Kung Foot remain the baseline rather than inventions of Retold.
Ubisoft currently lists December 3, 2026 for release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. An earlier announcement gave October 1, 2026, so the later date is the one to use as of October 30, 2026. Because the game is still unreleased, final performance, level-by-level changes and online-campaign support are not established.

| Rayman Legends Retold | Players who want Ubisoft’s redesigned presentation and revised content | Reworked hand-drawn visuals and stages, expanded co-op, Kung Foot Evo and announced accessibility additions | PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, PC | Oct 2026 |
| Rayman Legends (original) | Players who want the established 2D game and its original modes | Musical platforming, local co-op and Kung Foot in the original presentation | Platform availability depends on the original release; Nintendo Switch has a separate Definitive Edition | Oct 2026 |
The short version is that Retold changes how Ubisoft is presenting and revisiting the game, while the original remains the known version of the same musical platforming formula. It is not accurate to treat every bullet in the remake announcement as a newly invented feature, and it is equally premature to describe the remake as a proven technical upgrade.
What exactly is Rayman Legends Retold?
Retold is a remake: Ubisoft is rebuilding the game’s presentation and revisiting parts of its content rather than simply increasing the resolution of the existing release. That makes it a separate product from the Nintendo Switch Definitive Edition, which is the original Rayman Legends adapted for Switch with platform-specific features.

The distinction matters when reading store pages. “Definitive Edition” describes an edition of the older game; “Retold” is the name of the newer remake. Owning the Switch version does not, based on the announced information, mean that you already own Retold.
It also explains why “remake or remaster?” is the wrong either-or for a buyer who wants precision. Ubisoft’s announced language points to newly worked hand-drawn art and reworked stages, so Retold is being positioned as a remake. No announcement establishes that it contains an entirely new campaign, a different number of stages or a wholesale replacement of every original asset.
What changed in the visuals and stages?
Ubisoft’s clearest remake claim concerns presentation and level treatment: Retold has new hand-drawn work and reworked stages. The announcement does not establish that every stage has been replaced, nor does it provide a confirmed level count, frame-rate target or resolution comparison.
The original game’s visual baseline
The original Rayman Legends is a 2D platformer built around hand-drawn art, animation, musical stages and tightly timed movement. Its identity comes from that established visual language and the way levels synchronize movement with music, not from a modern rendering specification. Those fundamentals are useful context when judging Retold: a redesigned illustration or stage route is a change to an existing identity, not evidence that the underlying genre or rhythm-focused design has been discarded.
Retold’s announced treatment
Retold applies a new hand-drawn presentation and revisits stages. “Reworked” should be read as a publisher description of changed content, not as proof that every route, collectible, enemy placement or boss encounter is different. Until Ubisoft publishes a complete change list or the game releases, the safe conclusion is that the remake alters selected presentation and stage work while retaining the platforming foundation.
That wording leaves several practical questions open. There is no confirmed comparison showing how many stages have new layouts, whether collectibles move, or whether a particular musical sequence has been rebuilt from start to finish. There is also no authoritative claim about a new level total. A guide that assigns a percentage of changed stages would therefore be speculation rather than a confirmed specification.
No authoritative source in the available material supports claims about improved frame rate, resolution, loading times or animation quality. Those are release-version questions, not confirmed differences. PC buyers likewise should not infer a performance target or hardware requirement from a store page alone; a listing is not a benchmark or a published requirements sheet.
Which Rayman Legends features are not new?
Retold builds on several ideas that already defined Rayman Legends. Calling them “new” would misrepresent the comparison.
Musical platforming
Music-driven platforming belongs to the original game. Retold may present those sequences with its redesigned art and stage work, but the concept itself predates the remake. A reader comparing trailers should therefore separate a newly drawn scene from the established rhythm-platforming design it depicts.
Cooperative play
Local cooperative platforming was already part of Rayman Legends. Ubisoft’s Retold descriptions concern expanded or revised cooperative play, not the first appearance of co-op in the series. The useful question is what has been expanded and on which platform, not whether co-op exists at all.

Kung Foot
Kung Foot was an existing Rayman Legends mode. Retold’s announced Kung Foot Evo is best understood as an expansion or revision of that mode, not a brand-new idea. The Nintendo Switch Definitive Edition also advertised Kung Foot as part of the original game’s feature set. Buyers should not choose Retold simply because they believe it is the first Rayman release to include this side mode; the announced distinction is the Evo treatment.
How is multiplayer different in Retold?
The announced change is an expansion of cooperative play, while a PlayStation product listing specifies up to four local players. That is a local-multiplayer capability and should not be converted into a claim that the campaign supports online co-op.
What is confirmed
- Rayman Legends already supports local cooperative play.
- Ubisoft describes Retold as expanding cooperative play.
- A PlayStation listing says Retold supports up to four local players.
- Kung Foot returns in the revised Kung Foot Evo form.
What remains unconfirmed
The available announcements do not settle whether Retold has online campaign co-op, online Kung Foot, or another networked multiplayer mode. Storefront metadata that contains general online-related labels is not enough to prove a playable online campaign. Treat online support as unconfirmed until Ubisoft provides a specific feature statement for the mode and platform you intend to use.
This distinction matters for planning a purchase. A family sharing one console can reasonably use the four-player local wording as a buying signal, subject to the final platform listing. Someone choosing the game for friends in different homes needs a separate confirmation of online functionality. Do not substitute “multiplayer” or an online-services icon for an explicit statement that the campaign itself can be played over the internet.
What accessibility changes has Ubisoft announced?
Ubisoft identifies accessibility features among Retold’s additions. That signals a broader options package than the older promotional descriptions, but the currently available information does not provide a complete, setting-by-setting list or confirm that every option appears identically on every platform.
For a purchase decision, check the final accessibility menu description for the exact platform. Do not infer that an option not mentioned in an old advertisement was absent from every original release; promotional copy was not a complete catalogue of the original game’s settings. Conversely, do not assume that a feature announced for Retold has identical controls or presentation on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2 and PC until Ubisoft documents the platform implementations.
The responsible comparison is therefore about confirmed intent rather than an invented checklist: Retold is announced with accessibility additions, while the precise settings, defaults and platform differences still need verification. Players who depend on a particular control, display or assistance option should wait for the final support information or inspect the release menu before committing.
What is the difference between Retold and the Switch Definitive Edition?
The Switch Definitive Edition is the original game with Switch-specific adaptations. Retold is the remake for Nintendo Switch 2 and other current platforms.
| Category | Rayman Legends Retold | Rayman Legends Definitive Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Product type | Remake | Edition of the original game |
| Visual and stage treatment | New hand-drawn presentation and reworked stages announced by Ubisoft | Original presentation and content, adapted for Switch |
| Platform | PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC | Nintendo Switch |
| Switch-specific features | Designed for Nintendo Switch 2; final feature parity should be checked at release | Includes Switch descriptions such as touch controls and Kung Foot |
| Multiplayer wording | Expanded co-op announced; PlayStation listing says up to four local players | Original game’s local multiplayer and Kung Foot |
A Switch owner therefore has two different buying propositions: keep the original’s Switch implementation, or move to the Switch 2 remake for the announced redesign. The names are not interchangeable. “Retold vs Definitive Edition” is an edition comparison as much as a hardware comparison: one is a new remake product, and the other is a platform-specific edition of the older game.
Touch-control references on the Switch Definitive Edition should also be treated as part of that original edition’s description. They do not establish that Retold reproduces the same implementation, and Retold’s Switch 2 listing should be checked for its own controls and feature wording.

Which platforms and editions will be available?
Ubisoft lists Retold for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. The announcement also describes a physical retail Launch Edition with a reversible poster and an artbook.
Retold Launch Edition
The Launch Edition is a physical-package description, not a promise that every retailer, region or inventory channel will carry it. Verify the platform printed on the listing before buying: the Nintendo Switch 2 package is not the same product as the Nintendo Switch Definitive Edition.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The poster and artbook are the confirmed extras for that announced retail package. They should not be assumed to accompany a digital purchase, a different edition or every regional SKU. No verified retailer inventory, preorder status or price is established here, so compare the exact package details when stores open orders. Searching for Rayman Legends Retold Launch Edition Nintendo Switch 2 is useful only if the result clearly identifies the Switch 2 platform and the physical extras.
Buying the original on Switch
The relevant search is Rayman Legends Definitive Edition for Nintendo Switch. Confirm that a listing is for the original Switch game, check whether it is physical or digital, and verify the region and platform. A Switch copy should not be assumed to include a Retold upgrade. If a seller uses “definitive” loosely in a headline, inspect the product description and platform logo rather than relying on the word alone.
When does Rayman Legends Retold come out?
Ubisoft’s current game page lists December 3, 2026. An earlier Ubisoft announcement listed October 1, 2026; that date has been superseded by the newer listing.
As of October 30, 2026, December 3 is still in the future. Release dates can change, so recheck Ubisoft’s game page and the store page for your platform before placing a preorder or planning a local multiplayer event. The newer date controls this comparison because it is the date currently displayed on Ubisoft’s game page, while the October date remains useful only as an explanation for why older articles may disagree.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesShould you buy Retold or stay with the original?
The better choice depends on what you want changed, not on an assumed performance advantage. There is no confirmed price comparison in the announced information, so value should be judged by edition contents, platform and desired features rather than an invented cost difference.
Choose Retold if you want the announced remake work
- You want the new hand-drawn presentation and reworked stages.
- You are buying for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 or PC.
- Expanded cooperative play, Kung Foot Evo and the announced accessibility additions matter to you.
- You want the physical Launch Edition’s reversible poster and artbook, subject to regional availability.
- You are comfortable buying before independent performance testing and complete level-by-level documentation exist.
Keep or buy the original if you want the established version
- You already own Rayman Legends and are satisfied with its presentation and modes.
- You specifically want the Nintendo Switch version’s touch-control implementation.
- You need a version whose content and feature set are already known rather than a pre-release remake.
- You are looking for the original Kung Foot mode rather than the announced Evo revision.
- You want to use original Nintendo Switch hardware, since Retold is currently listed for Switch 2 rather than the older console.
What cannot be decided yet
There is not enough released evidence to say that Retold plays better, runs faster or loads more quickly. A definitive performance recommendation requires final software and platform-specific measurements after launch. The confirmed value proposition today is the remake’s changed presentation, reworked stage treatment and announced additions.
What should you verify before buying?
- Check the product name. “Retold” is the remake; “Definitive Edition” is the original Switch release.
- Check the platform. Retold is listed for Nintendo Switch 2, not the original Nintendo Switch, alongside PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
- Check multiplayer wording. Four-player support is described as local in the PlayStation listing; online campaign co-op is not confirmed.
- Check the edition contents. The Launch Edition’s poster and artbook apply to the announced physical package, not automatically to digital versions.
- Check the date. Use December 3, 2026, while recognizing that release schedules can be revised.
- Check accessibility details. Read the final platform listing or Ubisoft support information for the exact options you need.
- Check the format and region. Physical and digital products can have different extras or availability, and a Switch listing may refer to either the original game or the Switch 2 remake.
- Check PC information separately. Wait for official system requirements and independent testing rather than assuming a storefront label proves performance.
How this comparison is framed
The comparison separates confirmed remake claims from features inherited from the original. It gives priority to Ubisoft’s current date and platform listing, distinguishes local multiplayer from unconfirmed online support, treats Kung Foot Evo as a revision of an existing mode, and avoids unsupported frame-rate, resolution, level-count and performance claims. The buying guidance weighs ownership of the original, interest in the announced changes and the value of physical extras.

Will Retold run on the original Nintendo Switch?
Retold is listed for Nintendo Switch 2, while the existing Nintendo Switch product is the Definitive Edition of the original game. Compatibility with the older Switch hardware has not been confirmed, so do not assume that a Switch 2 release is an original-Switch release.
Is Retold a remake or a remaster?
Ubisoft presents Retold as a remake, citing new hand-drawn work and reworked stages. It is therefore a separate remake product, not merely a renamed or resolution-only version of the original.
Is Kung Foot new in Retold?
No. Kung Foot was already part of Rayman Legends, including the Switch Definitive Edition’s feature description. Retold introduces the announced Kung Foot Evo revision or expansion.
Does four-player support mean online campaign co-op?
No. The four-player wording comes from a PlayStation listing that specifies local players. Ubisoft’s available descriptions do not confirm online campaign co-op, so network play should be treated as unresolved.
