Rbxassetid Finder: What It Is, How to Use It, and Why You May Not Need It

Rbxassetid Finder is a community-made Roblox model that formats legacy asset URLs into rbxassetid references. Here is how it works, how to install it safely, and why most Studio creators may not need it.

Rbxassetid Finder is a community-created Roblox Studio model, not a general asset-search website or an official Roblox utility. The Creator Store listing identifies it as a model by @MasterScootScoot, with asset ID 11715720836. Its stated purpose is to format or convert an older Roblox asset URL such as http://www.roblox.com/asset/?id=123456789 into rbxassetid://123456789.

It can still be useful for a narrow, legacy workflow or as a beginner example of a client-side interface. However, most developers do not need to install it: Roblox Studio and the current asset workflow already handle many common image and decal references. If you do try it, use a disposable test place and inspect its scripts before running them.

What Rbxassetid Finder actually does

The name is easy to misunderstand. Rbxassetid Finder does not appear to be a catalog search engine that finds Roblox assets by keyword, username, image, or description. It is a small Roblox Model containing a user interface and scripts that are intended to help format an existing asset reference.

The creator’s December 2, 2022 Developer Forum post describes the original use case: converting an older URL-style reference like this:

http://www.roblox.com/asset/?id=123456789

into the Roblox content URI format:

rbxassetid://123456789

That is primarily format conversion. It does not necessarily transform a decal into an image, download an asset, repair permissions, or change the underlying asset. The digits still refer to whatever Roblox object or content was originally identified by that number.

The creator also described the model as a simplified version of a similar utility associated with Basic Admin Essentials 2.0. Later discussion on the same Developer Forum thread acknowledged that Roblox Studio already handled much of this workflow in common property-entry situations. That is why the model is best viewed as a historical or niche convenience rather than an essential modern development tool.

Three terms that are often confused

Term Meaning
Roblox asset ID The numeric identifier assigned to an uploaded Roblox asset or object.
rbxassetid://ID A Roblox content URI that references an asset using its numeric ID.
Asset ID finder A generic description that might mean a URL extractor, catalog search tool, converter, or asset scanner. Rbxassetid Finder is not proven to provide all of those functions.

Is Rbxassetid Finder an official Roblox tool?

No. It is a community-created Creator Store model by @MasterScootScoot. The Creator Store is Roblox’s official distribution platform, but an asset being available there does not mean Roblox authored, supports, or guarantees the asset.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is also not a standalone Windows or web application. You insert it into a Roblox Studio place, use its in-experience interface during a playtest, and then decide whether any resulting code or references are useful in your project.

Do not describe the model as malware based only on the fact that it contains scripts. The public listing establishes that it contains two scripts, but that fact alone does not prove malicious behavior. It does mean that you should inspect the scripts before trusting the model in a project.

How to get and install it

The model’s Creator Store asset ID is:

11715720836
  1. Open the Rbxassetid Finder Creator Store listing.
  2. Confirm that the result is the model created by @MasterScootScoot. Avoid assuming that every similarly named result is the same asset.
  3. Use Get Model, or locate the model through Studio’s Toolbox and insert it into a place.
  4. Insert it into a blank or disposable test place rather than directly into a live production experience.
  5. Open Explorer and inspect the inserted hierarchy and scripts before running the model.
  6. To follow the creator’s original setup, move the child named Client UI into StarterGui.
  7. Start a Studio playtest with Play or Play Here.
  8. Follow the instruction script or instructions included with the current model.
  9. Test with a non-sensitive, publicly usable image or decal reference.

The Roblox Toolbox documentation explains how models are inserted into Studio and documents a Disable Scripts option for inserted assets. If you are inspecting the model, disabling its scripts first can prevent unknown code from running while you review it. Enable only the scripts you understand and actually need.

The public listing and forum post do not document every current UI control, input field, output label, or clipboard behavior. Consequently, do not rely on a guide that invents a particular button name or promises automatic clipboard copying. Inspect the current model and its included instruction script to determine how that version behaves.

If the interface does not appear

Use these checks in order. They are practical troubleshooting steps, not a guarantee that the old model will work in every current Studio version.

  1. Check the location. Confirm that Client UI was moved into StarterGui, not left inside the inserted model.
  2. Start a playtest. A client interface may not display while you are only editing the place. Use Play or Play Here.
  3. Check script status. Make sure the relevant LocalScript is enabled. If you used Disable Scripts, it will not run until you deliberately enable it.
  4. Open Output. Look for errors caused by missing objects, outdated APIs, incorrect paths, or failed references.
  5. Check the service. The UI should not accidentally be sitting in StarterPlayerScripts, ReplicatedStorage, ServerScriptService, or another location that does not provide the expected GUI behavior.
  6. Confirm the model inserted completely. Reinsert it into a new Baseplate place if objects or scripts appear to be missing.
  7. Test without project conflicts. A blank place can show whether the issue belongs to Rbxassetid Finder or to another script, interface, or plugin in your game.
  8. Read the included instructions. The current model may rely on names or hierarchy relationships that are not explained in older online guides.

Because the complete current hierarchy and source are not exposed by the public listing, these checks should be treated as likely causes rather than confirmed requirements for every copy of the asset.

What does rbxassetid:// mean?

Roblox assets are cloud-based content with unique numeric IDs. Roblox documents rbxassetid://[ID] as a URI form used to reference uploaded content in properties and scripts. For example:

rbxassetid://7229442422

The prefix is the URI scheme and the digits are the identifier. The prefix is not a special finder code. Adding it to a number does not:

  • change a decal into an image;
  • change an audio asset into a sound that every game can use;
  • make a deleted or moderated asset available;
  • grant permission to use restricted content; or
  • prove that the number belongs to an asset compatible with the property receiving it.

Roblox’s asset documentation provides the current overview of content IDs and URI formats.

Using an image ID without Rbxassetid Finder

For a basic GUI image, assign a compatible content ID to an ImageLabel. A simple scripted example is:

local imageLabel = script.Parent

imageLabel.Image = 'rbxassetid://123456789'

The current ImageLabel documentation describes the Image property as accepting the content ID of a Roblox decal or image. Roblox also documents the newer ImageContent property, which supports asset URIs and certain editable image workflows. For new work, consult the current API reference instead of assuming that a tutorial written several years ago uses the preferred property.

For an editor workflow, you can often select an ImageLabel in Explorer, open its properties, and enter or paste the relevant content reference directly into the image property. Toolbox and Asset Manager can also be more convenient than inserting a separate conversion model.

Decal IDs and image IDs are not always the same thing

Older Roblox tutorials often distinguish between a decal asset and the underlying image content:

  • A decal is an asset or wrapper used to apply visual content to a surface.
  • An image is the uploaded image content used by an image or GUI property.

That distinction is useful, but modern Roblox workflows require qualification. Studio may resolve or normalize a decal reference when you enter it into a supported property. Scripted assignment, copied Toolbox IDs, and different engine properties may behave differently. Community reports have documented cases where Copy Asset ID supplied a decal ID even though the developer wanted the underlying image ID.

At the same time, the current official ImageLabel documentation says that its image property can hold the asset ID of a decal or image. Therefore, it is too broad to say that decal IDs never work, or that Studio automatically converts every ID in every context.

If a scripted image does not load, verify the actual target property, the asset type, and the behavior in the current Studio version. Do not assume that a number copied from a web page, Toolbox, or decal URL is interchangeable everywhere.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Older code may use Decal.Texture. Roblox’s current Decal API documentation marks that property as deprecated and documents newer content properties such as ColorMapContent. Treat tutorials that rely on Texture as legacy guidance unless the current API documentation says otherwise.

rbxthumb: a better option for previews

If you only need to show a preview of an asset, a thumbnail URI may be more appropriate than the original content URI. Roblox documents the rbxthumb scheme for asset thumbnails.

local imageLabel = script.Parent

imageLabel.Image = 'rbxthumb://type=Asset&id=123456789&w=420&h=420'

Roblox documents asset thumbnail sizes including 150×150 and 420×420. A thumbnail reference is useful for an asset browser, preview panel, or selection screen, but it is not necessarily the original full-resolution image asset. It will not replace a content ID when a property or script specifically requires the underlying asset.

Why a correctly formatted ID may still fail

An rbxassetid:// string can be syntactically correct and still produce a blank image, error, or unusable reference. Check these independent causes.

Deleted, archived, or moderated content

Roblox can remove or archive assets. Archived assets may disappear from the website and no longer be usable or visible in experiences. Moderated content can also fail to load. Newly uploaded content may remain unavailable while moderation is pending; Roblox states that assets still under moderation cannot be seen or interacted with by players in published games.

Privacy and permissions

A valid ID does not automatically mean that every experience can use the asset. Roblox’s asset privacy documentation distinguishes between access levels such as Restricted and Open Use. A restricted asset may require permission for the current creator or experience.

Wrong asset type

A number can identify an image, decal, audio asset, animation, mesh, model, place, badge, or another Roblox object. The URI syntax does not make those types interchangeable. An audio ID is not an image, and a model ID should not be pasted into ImageLabel.Image simply because both values are numeric.

Studio and runtime differences

Studio may perform helpful conversion when you paste a reference into a property. A LocalScript or server Script may not perform exactly the same conversion when assigning a value at runtime. This is one reason community developers continue to report decal-versus-image edge cases even though current Roblox properties support broader content workflows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Incorrect URL parsing

The number in a URL may identify a page, decal wrapper, model, place, game, badge, or another object rather than the content expected by the property. Rbxassetid Finder cannot be assumed to identify the correct underlying content merely by adding a prefix.

Asset availability in the live experience

An asset that appears in Studio can still fail after publication because of privacy settings, moderation, permissions, script errors, or differences between Studio and the live client. Test the actual published experience when availability matters.

Is it safe to insert?

Use a cautious, non-alarmist approach. The model is listed as containing scripts, and Roblox warns that third-party Creator Store models can include malicious backdoors. Roblox indicates that Toolbox can show whether an inserted asset contains scripts, but moderation is not a guarantee that every harmful script has been detected.

The model is not proven malicious by the available evidence. The correct conclusion is that it requires inspection.

Safer installation checklist

  1. Insert it into a blank test place, never directly into a live production game.
  2. Inspect every Script and LocalScript in Explorer.
  3. Review the source for obfuscation, unexpected remote loading, unrelated game changes, suspicious require() calls, or network-related behavior that the tool does not need.
  4. Use the Toolbox option to disable scripts during inspection when available.
  5. Run only the scripts you understand and need.
  6. Copy the specific UI or conversion logic into your own project only after you understand what it does.
  7. Delete the model from the production place if the project does not require its interface.

Roblox’s guidance on third-party vulnerabilities and Creator Store asset safety is worth following for any model with scripts, not just this one.

Can it be used in a published game?

The creator’s original instructions establish a setup involving StarterGui and a Studio playtest. They do not establish guaranteed compatibility with every current Roblox version or every published experience.

A tool can work in a test place and still fail in production because of:

  • restricted or private assets;
  • deleted, archived, or moderated content;
  • client/server assumptions;
  • broken object paths or script errors;
  • changes in Roblox content-loading behavior;
  • dependencies hidden elsewhere in the inserted model; or
  • differences between Studio and the live runtime.

Do not treat the creator’s 2022 claim that the utility worked with tested examples as a current guarantee that it converts every decal, image, or asset type. If you publish a game containing it, test the complete experience on the client and review the model again after any update.

Better alternatives for common jobs

Your goal Recommended approach Trade-off
Paste an ID into Studio Use Toolbox, Asset Manager, or the relevant property directly. Fastest and requires no third-party model.
Format a legacy URL Extract the number and prepend rbxassetid://. Manual, but simple and transparent.
Display an image in a GUI Assign a compatible content ID to ImageLabel.Image, or use the current content property documented by Roblox. You must use an asset compatible with the property.
Display a preview Use an rbxthumb://type=Asset... reference. You receive a thumbnail, not necessarily the original image.
Convert many IDs in the editor Use a trusted Studio plugin or a small editor utility. More appropriate for bulk work than an in-game GUI, but plugins also require trust and review.
Find assets by keyword Search the Creator Store or Toolbox. This is a different task from URL formatting.
Load a public model by ID Use AssetService:LoadAssetAsync() with the required permissions. More complex and security-sensitive; it is not an image-ID converter.

Programmatically loading a model

If your goal is to load a public model by numeric ID rather than format an image reference, Roblox documents AssetService:LoadAssetAsync() as the modern replacement for InsertService:LoadAsset(). Third-party asset loading requires enabling Allow Loading Third Party Assets in Experience Settings; Roblox documents that this setting is disabled by default. Protect the call with pcall() so a failed load does not stop the rest of the script.

local AssetService = game:GetService('AssetService')

local assetId = 123456789

local success, result = pcall(function()
    return AssetService:LoadAssetAsync(assetId)
end)

if success and result then
    result.Parent = workspace
else
    warn('Asset failed to load:', result)
end

See the current AssetService documentation before using this approach. It solves a different problem from Rbxassetid Finder and should not be added merely to convert an image URL.

Common failure symptoms and fixes

Symptom Likely explanation What to check
The GUI is invisible The client UI is in the wrong service, the game is not running, or a LocalScript is disabled. Move Client UI to StarterGui, start a playtest, and check the script state.
The script throws an error The model may rely on an object name, hierarchy, or API behavior that changed. Read Output, inspect the referenced objects, and test in a blank Baseplate place.
The image is blank The asset may be private, moderated, deleted, unavailable, or incompatible with the property. Verify the asset type, permissions, moderation status, and target property.
The number works in a Studio property but not in code Studio property entry and scripted assignment may not normalize references identically. Test the actual content type and use the current property/API documentation.
A preview appears but cannot be used as the original image An rbxthumb URI points to a thumbnail. Use the original content reference when the destination requires it.
The model works in Studio but not after publishing Live permissions, moderation, client/server behavior, or runtime differences may be involved. Test the published experience and review asset privacy settings.

Should you install Rbxassetid Finder?

Use this decision rule:

  • Skip it if you only need to paste an image or decal reference into a normal Studio property.
  • Skip it if you are looking for assets by name or keyword; use Creator Store or Toolbox search instead.
  • Consider it for testing if you are following an old tutorial that specifically expects its GUI or you want to examine a simple community-made converter.
  • Use caution if you plan to keep it in a production game, because it contains scripts and its original instructions do not prove current live-game compatibility.
  • Build a cleaner solution if you regularly convert many references. A small trusted editor utility or plugin is usually more maintainable than shipping an old runtime GUI.

The model’s Creator Store ID, 11715720836, is the ID of the Rbxassetid Finder model itself. It is not the image ID you should paste into an ImageLabel. For an image, use that image’s own content ID; for a thumbnail, use the appropriate rbxthumb URI.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Rbxassetid Finder find Roblox assets by name?

No. The available description supports a small in-experience converter for formatting existing asset references. It does not establish that the model searches the Roblox catalog by keyword, image, or username.

What is the Rbxassetid Finder model ID?

The Creator Store asset ID is 11715720836. That number identifies the community-created Rbxassetid Finder model, not the image or decal you may want to use in your game.

Can I use an asset ID without installing the model?

Usually, yes. For a GUI image, assign a compatible content reference such as rbxassetid://123456789 to ImageLabel.Image, or use the current Roblox content properties. Studio, Toolbox, and Asset Manager may also handle the workflow directly.

Why does my decal ID not work as an image ID?

Conversion behavior can differ by property, Studio version, and whether the ID was entered manually or assigned by a script. Current ImageLabel documentation supports decal or image asset IDs in that property, but a copied decal ID may still fail in another workflow. Verify the actual asset type and target property.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is Rbxassetid Finder safe?

There is not enough public evidence to call the model malicious or to guarantee that it is safe. It contains scripts, so insert it into a test place, inspect the scripts, disable anything unnecessary, and avoid placing it directly into a production experience.

What is the difference between rbxassetid and rbxthumb?

rbxassetid://ID references Roblox content by its asset ID. rbxthumb://type=Asset&id=ID&w=420&h=420 references a thumbnail preview. Use rbxthumb when a preview is sufficient, not when a property requires the original content asset.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Rbxassetid Finder is a genuine but old community Roblox model, listed as asset 11715720836. It is best understood as a small GUI-based formatter for legacy asset URL references, not an official Roblox tool or universal asset finder. For most current Studio projects, using the correct content ID directly is simpler, more transparent, and safer. Install the model only for a specific workflow you have tested, and inspect its scripts before running it.
