Reanimal Promises a “More Terrifying Journey” Than Little Nightmares—But Is It Scarier?

Tarsier promises a darker, more terrifying experience with Reanimal. Its new story, co-op play and moving shared camera set it apart from Little Nightmares, but scariness remains subjective.

“More terrifying” is Tarsier Studios’ promise for Reanimal, not a measured verdict that it is scarier than Little Nightmares. The clearest differences are the new sibling-led story, co-op options and a shared camera that moves more freely than Little Nightmares’ mostly fixed, side-on view. Those changes show how Tarsier is pursuing a darker experience; whether it works better for you is a matter of taste.

What does “more terrifying” mean?

When THQ Nordic announced Reanimal on August 27, 2024, it described the return of the creators of Little Nightmares I and II as a chance to take players on “a darker, more terrifying journey than ever before.” Tarsier Studios repeats that positioning on its official Reanimal page. It is marketing language and a statement of creative intent—not the result of a standardized comparison showing that Reanimal frightens players more than Little Nightmares.

The useful question, then, is what Tarsier has changed in pursuit of that promise. The developers point to a grittier tone and a different camera approach, while the game’s premise and co-op options create a new setup for its horror. None of those design choices guarantees a particular reaction.

How is Reanimal different from Little Nightmares?

A new story, not Little Nightmares III

Tarsier developed the first two Little Nightmares games, but Reanimal is presented as a separate horror adventure with new characters and a new setting—not as a numbered sequel. Its story follows a brother and sister trying to rescue missing friends and escape an island they once called home. They explore on foot and by boat, according to the THQ Nordic announcement and Tarsier’s game page.

A more mobile, shared camera

In an Xbox Wire interview published February 13, 2026, producer Andreas Johnsson and narrative director David Mervick contrasted Little Nightmares’ mostly fixed, side-on perspective with Reanimal’s more cinematic camera. It can pull back to show the children against a large environment or move closer to danger. The official game site describes it as a shared, directed camera designed to build claustrophobia and tension.

This is a concrete difference in how the games frame their characters and surroundings, rather than proof of which is more frightening. A camera that reveals more of a space may change how a scene feels; the effect depends on the player and the moment.

Solo play and co-op

Reanimal can be played solo, in local co-op or online co-op, and Tarsier’s page also lists cross-play and Friend’s Pass. The shared camera is part of the intended presentation in co-op as well as a way of shaping the game’s atmosphere. These options distinguish Reanimal’s setup, but do not establish that playing together makes it more or less scary for every player.

A darker, grittier intended tone

Tarsier has described its aim as darker and grittier than Little Nightmares. In a January 2026 GamesRadar+ interview, narrative director David Mervick said, “We don’t give people the safety net of the charm of Little Nightmares,” describing the tonal shift. That is the developer’s account of its intention; it is not an independent measure of audience response.

What does a preview say about the horror?

A PlayStation Blog hands-on preview published February 11, 2026 describes changing environments across a fragmented island, minimal dialogue and environmental storytelling, alongside stealth, hiding, chase sequences and occasional cooperation puzzles. Its writer also discusses co-op AI. These are observations from that preview writer’s play experience, not a controlled comparison with Little Nightmares or a report of this article’s own hands-on testing.

That description offers examples of how tension can be built: through what players see in the environment, when they must hide or flee, and how they coordinate. It still cannot settle a personal question like “Which game will scare me more?” A player’s response to atmosphere, pacing and chase scenes is subjective.

When and where can you play Reanimal?

Tarsier announced February 13, 2026 as the release date, and the official site reports the game available from that date. Tarsier currently lists PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Windows Store, Steam, GOG and Epic Games Store; the official Reanimal site also displays a Nintendo Switch 2 platform icon. Store availability and editions can vary by region, so check the local store listing for current details. The site identifies The Prisoner as the first of three planned REANIMAL DLC chapters; release plans may change.
