Avast One Free Antivirus is the clearest current free choice for a Windows 7 PC, provided the computer runs Windows 7 SP1 and has Microsoft’s Convenience Rollup installed. Avast explicitly says its free antivirus remains compatible with 32-bit and 64-bit Windows 7 systems and continues to receive protection. Treat that as a temporary defensive layer, not a way to make Windows 7 secure: Microsoft ended Windows 7 support on January 14, 2020, so the operating system no longer receives normal security fixes. If the computer cannot move to a supported release, install the antivirus from the vendor’s official site, keep it updated, and plan to replace or upgrade the machine.

What is the best free antivirus for Windows 7?

For a currently supported free product, Avast One Free Antivirus has the strongest documented Windows 7 compatibility statement in this comparison. Avast specifies Windows 7 SP1 with the Convenience Rollup, in either 32-bit or 64-bit editions, and says it continues compatibility and antivirus protection.

That recommendation has an important limit. Antivirus software scans files, blocks known malicious programs and can filter some dangerous web or email activity; it cannot repair vulnerabilities in the Windows 7 kernel, browser, drivers or networking components. Windows 7’s lack of operating-system updates remains the largest risk, so migration to a supported Windows release is the safer long-term answer.

Why is Windows 7 still risky even with antivirus?

Microsoft ended support for Windows 7 on January 14, 2020. Ordinary installations no longer receive Microsoft’s regular software updates, security updates or fixes. The final listed year of Microsoft’s Extended Security Updates program ended on January 11, 2023, so a consumer PC cannot restore normal patch coverage simply by installing an antivirus.

Unpatched vulnerabilities can be exploited before an antivirus definition recognizes the attack. A malicious document, compromised website, vulnerable browser plug-in or exposed network service may therefore succeed even when the antivirus dashboard reports that it is working. Keep the machine behind a properly configured router, use a modern supported browser when one is available for the hardware, remove software you no longer need, and avoid using the Windows 7 computer for banking or other high-value accounts.

Does Avast support Windows 7?

Avast’s Windows 7 compatibility information says Avast One with Free Antivirus works on Windows 7 SP1 with the Convenience Rollup. It lists support for both 32-bit and 64-bit editions and says the company continues compatibility and protection. Check the installer page again when you download it, because vendor requirements can change.

What performance claims does Avast publish?

Avast presents two 2025 test results on its compatibility page: “100% real-world threat samples detected and blocked,” attributed to AV-Test, 2025, and a “Total Accuracy Rating: 100%, False Positives: 0%,” attributed to SE Labs, 2025. These are vendor-presented references to named laboratories, not an independent test conducted for this article; interpret them in the context of each laboratory’s test method and date.

How do I install Avast safely?

  1. Confirm the prerequisites. Open Control Panel, choose System and Security, then System, and verify that Windows 7 Service Pack 1 is installed. Install the Convenience Rollup through Microsoft’s remaining official update resources or your organization’s approved Windows 7 servicing process before running the antivirus installer.
  2. Use the vendor’s official download page. Do not use old installer discs, file-sharing sites or “free antivirus” mirrors. Check that the download is signed by the vendor and that your browser shows a secure connection before launching it.
  3. Remove conflicting real-time antivirus software. Two products competing for real-time scanning can cause crashes, slowdowns and incorrect detections. Use the existing product’s own uninstall tool, restart, and then install Avast.
  4. Choose the free installation. Read each setup screen so an optional trial, browser extension or extra utility is not installed unintentionally. Keep real-time file protection enabled.
  5. Update and scan. Allow the initial engine, application and definition updates to finish, then run a full scan. On an old hard disk this can take hours; leave the computer connected to power.
  6. Check the status after restarting. Open Avast’s protection dashboard and confirm that real-time protection and automatic updates are enabled. A green status message does not mean Windows 7 itself is patched.

How do the main Windows 7 antivirus choices compare?

The products below do not have equivalent support terms. Avast is the only option in this set with a clear, documented free-product recommendation for Windows 7. The other entries are included so you do not mistake legacy compatibility or an end-of-service product for a current free solution.

Product Windows 7 requirement Free status in the cited information Update or support position Important caveat
Avast One Free Antivirus Windows 7 SP1 plus the Convenience Rollup; 32-bit or 64-bit Free antivirus edition identified Avast says compatibility and protection continue; its page shows 2025 laboratory results Verify the current installer requirements before downloading
AVG AntiVirus Windows 7 Service Pack 1 plus the Convenience Rollup Free edition exists, but legacy support is conditional Without the Convenience Rollup, the installation is capped at AVG AntiVirus 21.2 and receives no further application updates Not a clean recommendation for an installation missing the rollup
Bitdefender antimalware Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 are covered by the cited announcement Not stated in Bitdefender’s announcement Antimalware support announced through January 14, 2027 Do not assume a free consumer tier; verify the exact product and license
Microsoft Security Essentials Windows 7 installations that already had it No longer available for new download Reached end of service January 14, 2020; signature updates for existing installations continued only until 2023 Do not obtain old installers from third-party mirrors

Is AVG still a practical free option?

AVG AntiVirus can be a conditional legacy option when Windows 7 Service Pack 1 and the Convenience Rollup are both present. AVG states that Windows 7 without the rollup is limited to AVG AntiVirus 21.2 and receives no later application updates.

That distinction matters because definitions and the application itself are different update streams. A system may still download some malware signatures while running an application build that no longer receives feature, compatibility or security fixes. If you choose AVG on an old installation, first verify the rollup, check the product’s update screen after installation and treat any “application updates unavailable” message as a reason to migrate rather than a setting to ignore.

Does Bitdefender offer free antivirus for Windows 7?

Bitdefender’s support announcement says its antimalware support for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 continues until January 14, 2027. The announcement also warns that antimalware support cannot substitute for Microsoft’s missing operating-system security updates.

That announcement does not establish that a free Bitdefender consumer tier is available for Windows 7. Confirm the exact product name, license terms, system requirements and download source before treating it as a free choice. A trial or a paid legacy license is not the same as a permanently free antivirus.

Can I still use Microsoft Security Essentials?

No. Microsoft’s support information says Microsoft Security Essentials reached end of service on January 14, 2020 and is no longer available as a download. Microsoft continued signature updates for existing installations only until 2023.

Old MSE installers found on download sites are not a safe workaround. They may be modified, bundled with unwanted software or unable to update, and installing them can create a false sense of protection. Uninstall MSE if it is present but malfunctioning, restart the computer, and use a currently documented product instead.

What should I check before installing antivirus on an old Windows 7 PC?

Confirm the servicing level

At minimum, verify Service Pack 1 and the Convenience Rollup when the chosen product requires them. If Windows Update is broken, record the error code and use only Microsoft’s official servicing guidance or an administrator-managed offline update process; do not download random “one-click” repair packages.

Back up irreplaceable files

Copy documents, photos and game saves to an external drive that is disconnected after the copy. Antivirus installation normally does not erase files, but a failing hard disk, existing malware or an interrupted update can. Test that several files open from the backup before making major changes.

Remove obsolete security software

Uninstall expired security suites and browser toolbars. Their filter drivers can conflict with a new real-time scanner even when the old program appears inactive. Restart between uninstalling and installing whenever the installer requests it.

Expect limited hardware performance

Real-time scanning can be noticeable on a computer with a mechanical hard disk, little memory or an older processor. Schedule full scans when the PC is idle, leave real-time protection on, and exclude only trusted, non-sensitive folders when a vendor’s documented troubleshooting procedure specifically calls for an exclusion. Do not exclude the entire drive to make the computer feel faster.

What if the Windows 7 computer is slow or unstable?

First distinguish malware symptoms from age-related hardware problems. A sudden browser redirect, unknown startup item, disabled security service or unexplained network traffic deserves a malware scan; a constantly full disk, failing drive or exhausted memory will not be fixed by antivirus.

A PC-maintenance utility can be used only as an adjunct. Outbyte PC Repair lists Windows 7 compatibility and describes itself as complementing an antivirus rather than replacing one. It may be relevant for diagnostics or cleanup after you have secured your files, but it is not the free primary antivirus answer and should not be used to disable real-time protection.

How can I reduce risk when Windows 7 cannot be upgraded?

  1. Separate sensitive work. Use a supported phone or computer for banking, password management, government services and work accounts. Do not store those credentials in a browser that runs only on the unpatched Windows 7 machine.
  2. Use a standard user account. Reserve the administrator account for maintenance. Running everyday software without administrator rights limits what some malware can change.
  3. Harden the browser. Remove unsupported plug-ins, disable automatic execution of downloaded files and be cautious with office documents containing macros. Keep the browser at the newest version that its vendor still provides for the system, recognizing that Windows 7 support may have ended even when the browser launches.
  4. Control removable media. Scan USB drives before opening them and disable AutoPlay. Do not plug an unknown drive into the only computer holding your backups.
  5. Maintain offline backups. Keep at least one backup disconnected from the PC so ransomware cannot encrypt every copy.
  6. Plan the exit. Check whether the processor, firmware, memory and storage meet the requirements for a supported Windows release. If not, replacing the computer with a Windows 11-capable PC is safer than extending the life of an unpatchable operating system.

Should I replace the PC instead of installing free antivirus?

Replacement or migration is the safer long-term decision whenever the computer can no longer receive a supported Windows release. Microsoft advises moving to Windows 11 or replacing an old device with a Windows 11-capable PC. Antivirus is useful during the transition, but it cannot supply the security updates that ended with Windows 7 support.

If immediate replacement is impossible, use Avast One Free Antivirus as a stopgap on a properly serviced Windows 7 SP1 installation, keep backups offline, minimize sensitive activity and set a date for migration. Do not buy legacy antivirus discs, license keys or Windows 7 installation media expecting them to restore security updates; they cannot.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I run two antivirus programs together on Windows 7?

Do not run two real-time antivirus engines at the same time. Keep one product’s real-time protection enabled and use a reputable on-demand scanner only when its documentation says it can coexist; otherwise uninstall the first product before installing the replacement.

How can I tell whether my Windows 7 PC is 32-bit or 64-bit?

Open Control Panel, select System and Security, then System, and read the “System type” entry. Use the installer that matches that entry; Avast’s stated compatibility covers both architectures, but other products may have narrower requirements.

Will a free antivirus make Windows 7 safe for online banking?

No. It can lower the chance of known malware infection but cannot patch vulnerabilities in the operating system, browser or drivers. Use a supported device for banking and other high-value accounts, and treat the Windows 7 computer as a restricted legacy machine.

What should I do if the antivirus installer says my Windows 7 version is unsupported?

Stop and verify Service Pack 1, the Convenience Rollup and the 32-bit/64-bit architecture before trying again. If those prerequisites are present and the vendor still blocks installation, do not use a mirror or modified installer; isolate the PC and prioritize migration to supported hardware.
