What does “native” mean for a recomp port?
A recompilation project translates or reconstructs console program code and then builds a version for the PC operating system. The N64Recomp technical explanation describes translating an N64 binary into C before compiling a native PC build; Xbox 360 projects use toolchains such as ReXGlue and XenonRecomp.
This is different from running the original executable inside a general-purpose emulator. A native build can expose PC-oriented graphics, frame-rate, resolution and input features, but those capabilities are project-specific. “Native” also does not mean an official remaster: the original game remains the source, and the community port’s completeness, bugs and feature set depend on its developers.
How does a recomp compare with emulation?
Neither approach is automatically better. A recomp can remove the need to emulate the original console’s hardware and may provide more direct PC graphics and input options, while emulation can preserve broad compatibility without requiring a separate native port for each game.

Do I need my own ROM or disc?
Yes. Can I move an installed recomp between Windows, Linux and Mac?
The launcher documents all three operating systems, but builds and dependencies are not automatically interchangeable. Plan to install the platform-specific release and repeat any source-file setup that the project requires.
Are these ports official releases from the console makers?
