The program can't start because recorder.dll is missing from your computer. You may also see The code execution cannot proceed because recorder.dll was not found, Error loading recorder.dll, or The specified module could not be found.
The 60-second answer
recorder.dll is a real filename, but it is not one unique Windows system component. It can belong to an application, plugin, game, or old software package.

The safest fix is to identify which program displays the error, locate the expected file path, then repair or reinstall that complete application from its original installer. Do not download a random copy of recorder.dll, copy it into System32, or run regsvr32 as a first step.

What causes a recorder.dll error
The likely cause depends on where the file belongs and what changed before the error appeared.

The filename alone cannot identify the developer, version, bitness, or safe replacement.
First, identify the owning application
Before repairing Windows, answer these questions:
- Which program or game shows the dialog?
- Did the error begin after uninstalling, updating, cleaning, restoring, or quarantining software?
- Is
recorder.dllexpected in an application directory, a game folder,System32,SysWOW64, or a temporary folder? - Does the problem affect one program or several?
- Is the application 32-bit or 64-bit?
- Does the program have Repair, Change, Verify files, or Reinstall options?
If the error appears while launching a screen recorder, macro utility, game, or older desktop application, that program is the first suspect.
Find the file path
If a copy of the file still exists:
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager. - Select the Details tab.
- Right-click the affected application, if it is running.
- Choose Open file location.
- Look in that folder and its subfolders for
recorder.dll.
You can also search from File Explorer:
- Open File Explorer.
- Select This PC.
- Search for
recorder.dll. - Right-click each result and select Open file location.
- Record the complete path without moving or replacing the file.
A path under the affected program’s own installation directory is more useful than the filename. A copy in a temporary download folder, an unfamiliar user folder, or an unrelated program directory needs extra scrutiny.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the owning application
This is the primary fix when one program fails.
Repair a Windows application
On Windows 11:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the application that produces the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Restart the application and test it.
The Repair option attempts to restore application files without removing the program’s data. If Repair is unavailable or does not help, return to the application’s menu and choose Reset only if you understand that it may remove local settings or data.
For a traditional desktop program:
- Press
Windows+R. - Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Select the affected program.
- Choose Repair or Change, if available.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
Reinstall the application
If repair fails:
- Close the affected program.
- Uninstall it from Settings > Apps > Installed apps, or from Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the application developer’s official website or use the original installation media.
- Install the same architecture and an edition compatible with your Windows version.
- Restart the computer again.
- Launch the application normally.
For a game, open its launcher and use Verify, Verify integrity, Repair, or an equivalent option before reinstalling the entire game. The exact menu depends on the launcher.
A clean reinstall is especially important when the message says The procedure entry point ... could not be located in recorder.dll. That wording usually indicates that the application and DLL do not come from the same matching build.
If the program is TechSmith Jing
A documented recorder.dll is associated with TechSmith Jing, an old screen-capture application. The documented sample is signed by TechSmith and normally appears under a Jing installation directory.

Treat Jing as legacy software rather than as a current Windows runtime. Do not obtain its DLL separately from an unverified mirror. Reinstall the complete application only from a trustworthy original installer or an available official vendor channel. If current Windows compatibility is not established, an older program may continue to fail even after its files are restored.
Fix 2: Check Microsoft Defender quarantine
Antivirus software can remove an old or uncommon DLL. Check this before repeatedly reinstalling.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Expand recent detections.
- Look for an entry involving
recorder.dllor the affected application. - Read the detected file path and threat details.
Do not select Allow on device merely because the filename looks correct. Restore a quarantined file only when all of these conditions are true:

- The related executable and DLL have a valid signature from the expected publisher.
- The installer came from a trustworthy source.
- A second security scan does not identify the file as malicious.
In many cases, reinstalling the application is safer than restoring the quarantined copy. The fresh installer can be scanned again before the application runs.
A recorder.dll file outside a known application directory may be a counterfeit or malware component. Conversely, an old legitimate file can be flagged because it is uncommon. The filename does not settle that question.
Fix 3: Check architecture and dependencies
A 32-bit application normally loads 32-bit dependencies, even on 64-bit Windows. A 64-bit DLL with the same name is not a substitute for a 32-bit DLL.
Check the application’s documentation or installer rather than guessing from the filename. Then reinstall the matching application architecture.
The message The specified module could not be found can also mean that recorder.dll exists but one of its dependencies is missing. Repair the owning application first. If the error identifies a particular runtime, install that runtime only from Microsoft or the application developer.

Visual C++ is not automatically the answer. recorder.dll itself is not verified as a Visual C++ runtime DLL. Microsoft’s current Visual C++ redistributables are available in x86, x64, and ARM64 editions, but the correct package depends on the application and the dependency it actually requires.
Do not install DirectX, .NET, or Visual C++ solely because a DLL error appears. Use those packages when the application’s documentation, installer, event log, or error message identifies them.
Examine the application error in Event Viewer
If reinstalling does not help:
- Press
Windows+R. - Type
eventvwr.mscand press Enter. - Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Look for an error at the time the program failed.
- Record the application name, faulting module, exception details, and any dependency name.
If the event identifies another missing DLL, repair the application or install the explicitly required official runtime. Do not replace files based only on a search result.
Fix 4: Update the application and, where relevant, its drivers
An old recorder, game, graphics utility, or capture application may depend on software that no longer works correctly with the installed Windows version. Check the developer’s official update channel and the application’s own update function.
For hardware-related capture failures:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, and any category related to the affected hardware.
- Right-click the relevant device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
If the problem began immediately after a driver update:
- Open Device Manager.
- Right-click the affected device and choose Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver, if available.
- Restart and test again.

Do not use Device Manager to search for recorder.dll. Drivers and application DLLs are different repair targets.

Fix 5: Repair confirmed Windows component corruption
Do this only when evidence points to a damaged Windows component, such as several unrelated applications failing or other Windows files reporting corruption. recorder.dll should not automatically be treated as a protected Windows file.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- In the same elevated window, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until SFC reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the affected program.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. These commands can repair Windows components, but SFC will not restore a missing third-party Jing DLL simply because that file is absent.

Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting difficult. Outbyte PC Repair can show identified system issues before repair, while its repair function requires the full version; it is optional, and application repair remains the correct solution for an app-owned DLL.
If the issue began directly after a Windows update or system change, use Settings > System > Recovery and review the available recovery options. System Restore is appropriate only when a suitable restore point exists and application repair has failed.

Do not register or download recorder.dll blindly
regsvr32 is for self-registering OLE and ActiveX DLLs that export a registration function. There is no verified evidence that the Jing recorder.dll is a self-registering COM server.
Running this command is therefore not a default repair:
regsvr32 recorder.dll
It may produce an error such as DllRegisterServer entry point was not found, and it does not restore a missing dependency or repair an incomplete application. Use regsvr32 only when the software developer specifically documents that the particular DLL is a self-registering component and provides the correct file path.
Never download a generic recorder.dll from a random DLL website. The copy may contain malware, belong to another application, have the wrong architecture, or be incompatible with the program. Copying it into System32 can also damage the system’s file layout and hide the real installation problem.

If the error remains after reinstalling
Record the following before seeking vendor support:
- The exact error text
- The application and version
- The complete expected path for
recorder.dll - The Windows version and system architecture
- Whether the file exists
- Its digital-signature status and named publisher
- Defender or antivirus actions
- The Event Viewer application error
- Any dependency named by the loader
- Whether the error affects other programs
If the file is in System32 or SysWOW64, do not overwrite it. Establish whether it is a genuine Windows file for that installation before taking further action. If the application is obsolete, its installer may not support current Windows versions, and compatibility rather than a missing DLL may be the underlying problem.

Is recorder.dll a Windows 10 or Windows 11 system file?
Not as one universal current Windows component. The name has been used by unrelated software, including an old Windows 3.1 Recorder component and third-party applications.

There is no evidence that the file itself is a Visual C++ or DirectX runtime DLL. Install those components only when the affected application identifies a missing dependency.
Can I copy recorder.dll into System32?
No. First identify the owning program and restore the complete application through its installer.
Why does Windows say a module is missing when the file exists?
The loader may be unable to find a dependency of recorder.dll, or the existing file may be corrupt, incompatible, or the wrong architecture.
