For a fast cash windfall in Red Dead Redemption 2 Story Mode, prioritize gold bars and treasure hunts; for income that also advances the story, do missions and bounties. Hunting, looting and other activities can supplement your cash, but the game’s guides do not establish a reliable dollars-per-minute ranking, and rewards depend on progress and execution.
Which money-making methods are best early in Story Mode?
This is a practical ranking, not a timed comparison: treasure offers the largest reported one-time returns, while missions and bounties combine cash with progression. Story Mode cash is separate from Red Dead Online’s Gold Bars, which Rockstar describes as a way to unlock online goods. Rockstar’s product page lists Story Mode and Red Dead Online separately.

| Accessible gold bars | $500 per bar when sold to a Fence, according to Hold To Reset. | Limpany’s Sheriff’s Office bar is reported obtainable in Chapter 2; you need Fence access to sell it. |
| Jack Hall Gang treasure | Two gold bars, reported as $1,000 total by RDR2.org. | The first map is described as purchasable from Maximo near Flatneck Station in Chapter 2. One-time map chain. |
| Poisonous Trail treasure | Four bars, valued at about $2,000 in GameSpot’s November 5, 2019 guide. | Maps must be found in sequence; this is a one-time reward, and the valuation is guide-reported. |
| Missions and bounties | Meaningful cash; exact rewards vary. An early-mission total of around $500 is specific to RDR2.org’s guide examples. | Progression-based; bounty targets brought in alive may pay more than dead targets. |
| Hunting, looting and trade | Supplemental, variable income from eligible valuables, carcasses, fish and pelts. | Returns depend on item, quality, buyer and availability; travel and carcass value loss can matter. |
1. Sell accessible gold bars to a Fence
Gold bars are among the strongest early cash options. Hold To Reset reports a sale value of $500 per bar, but you cannot cash one in at a general store: take it to a Fence. Its guide identifies a bar in the abandoned town of Limpany, in the Sheriff’s Office, as an early Chapter 2 opportunity. It also says the Emerald Ranch Fence becomes available after a Chapter 2 mission. Treat the bar as a valuable find, not spendable money until you have a Fence available.
2. Complete the Jack Hall Gang treasure hunt
RDR2.org reports that the completed Jack Hall Gang chain yields two gold bars, worth $1,000 at the guide’s stated $500-per-bar valuation. The first map is described as available from Maximo near Flatneck Station in Chapter 2. Follow the clues through the chain rather than expecting a payout from the first map alone.

3. Follow the Poisonous Trail maps
GameSpot’s November 5, 2019 guide reports a four-bar reward, valued there at about $2,000. The maps must be collected in order; going straight to the final location does not secure the reward. This is a substantial one-time treasure payout, not a repeatable route or a current timed estimate.
4. Do main story missions
Missions pay cash while opening more of the game, making them a sensible choice when you want money and progression together. RDR2.org’s early mission examples add up to around $500, but that is a guide-specific total, not a guaranteed amount for every player or every stretch of the story. Check the reward for the mission at hand rather than planning around that example as a fixed payout.
5. Take optional bounty posters
Bounties offer structured work without requiring you to rob a shop or train. A guide reports that capturing a target alive pays more, including on posters marked “dead or alive”; the specific reward varies. If you want to avoid turning a cash activity into a law problem, focus on the target and bring them in alive when feasible.
6. Loot enemies and searchable locations
After an encounter, search defeated enemies and nearby containers for cash and valuables. Not every item is accepted by an ordinary shop; guides note that many looted goods need to be sold to a Fence. Make looting part of activities you are already doing rather than spending long detours on uncertain finds.

7. Sell good-quality animals and fish
Butchers buy carcasses and fish, and guides report that quality affects the return. This is convenient supplemental income while traveling or hunting, but it is not comparable to a completed treasure chain. Carcasses can lose value over time, so sell them rather than carrying them around indefinitely.

8. Decide whether to sell or keep valuable pelts
Hunting selectively for valuable pelts can earn money, but legendary animals are finite and their materials may also be useful for crafting. Before selling a valuable pelt, consider whether you want the related gear more than the immediate cash. If you do sell, use an appropriate buyer; the return and the crafting value are different benefits.
9. Sell stolen valuables, stagecoaches or horses when available
Stolen goods and vehicles can become cash through the relevant Fence or other unlocked services. These opportunities depend on progress, take time to transport or sell, and do not have a consistent return established by the cited guides. Use them when they arise naturally; do not rely on them as a guaranteed fast-money loop.
10. Treat gambling and stranger encounters as extras
Poker and other minigames can produce winnings, but results depend on skill and luck, so they are not dependable income plans. Helping strangers may also lead to later rewards, but those are incidental rather than immediate guaranteed cash. Choose these activities for variety, not as a substitute for treasure, missions or bounties.
Why robbery is not a risk-free shortcut
Robbery can produce loot, but guides warn that law attention and bounty costs can offset the gain. Since the cited sources do not establish a dependable net return, it is better treated as a deliberate risk than as the default way to earn quickly. For lower-risk money, pursue a treasure chain, take a bounty, or sell loot and hunting goods through the appropriate buyer.
