IGN’s June 5, 2026 location guide counts 16 legendary animals and 13 legendary fish in Red Dead Redemption 2. Use the regional tables below to find each target, check its access requirements, and bring the right special lure for fish. Animal locations and rewards are attributed to IGN’s guide; tracking advice comes from its February 10, 2026 hunting walkthrough.
How to unlock the legendary fish map
Meet Jeremy Gill at the pier on the northeast shore of Flat Iron Lake and start the Stranger mission “A Fisher of Fish.” IGN’s location guide says this gives you the legendary fish map. Fish locations require special lures; the lure type for each target is listed below.

IGN lists 16 legendary animals across New Hanover, Ambarino, Lemoyne, West Elizabeth, and New Austin. The table gives the nearest recognizable landmarks and any prerequisite stated in the guide. A dash means IGN’s guide does not state a specific prerequisite for that animal.

How to track and hunt a legendary animal
IGN’s hunting walkthrough describes a clue-and-trail process rather than simply riding to a marker and shooting. Follow these steps once you reach an animal’s territory:

- Ride into the territory and wait for the on-screen territory notification.
- Dismount and move slowly in spiraling circles until a white question-mark clue appears.
- Investigate the clue, then use Eagle Eye to locate and follow the trail to the first evidence marker.
- Repeat the clue investigation and trail-following process through three evidence markers, then follow the final trail toward the animal.
- Approach carefully and use a powerful weapon. IGN says weapon choice does not damage a legendary pelt’s quality.
If the animal gets away, IGN recommends leaving the area and sleeping for 72 hours before trying again. Treat that as the walkthrough’s retry guidance rather than a guarantee that every encounter will reset under all circumstances.

What legendary animal rewards are used for
IGN says legendary hunts can yield different named pelts, hides, skins, teeth, claws, antlers, horns, tusks, or hearts; the precise items vary by animal. Sell or take skins to the Trapper for cosmetic gear, and bring animal parts to a Fence for talismans and trinkets. If a successful hunt leaves the carcass somewhere you cannot reach, such as in water or out of bounds, IGN says the one-off crafting materials are automatically sent to the Trapper and Fence.

IGN’s location guide says legendary animals do not respawn after a successful hunt in the same save. Keep that in mind before taking a shot; the guide’s automatic transfer of crafting materials applies when the carcass is inaccessible, not as a way to repeat the hunt.
