Cyberpunk 2077 has the higher graphics ceiling on a modern, high-end gaming PC. Its ray-traced and path-traced modes can produce more advanced lighting, reflections and shadows than Red Dead Redemption 2. Red Dead Redemption 2 is often the more convincing-looking game when ray tracing is unavailable, because its landscapes, weather, animation and color design form an unusually coherent natural world. The answer changes with your platform, resolution, frame-rate target, upscaling setting and graphics preset.
What “better graphics” means in this comparison
A single screenshot can make either game look superior. A fair comparison has to hold the major variables constant: use the same display resolution, the same frame-rate goal, comparable image-quality settings and the same upscaling approach. Most importantly, identify whether Cyberpunk 2077 is running in a rasterized mode, a conventional ray-tracing preset or Ray Tracing: Overdrive. Those modes represent materially different workloads and lighting models.

Red Dead Redemption 2 (RDR2) launched without a ray-tracing pipeline. Its PC version instead builds its look from rasterized lighting, ambient occlusion, high-resolution textures, volumetric effects, shadows, reflections and extensive environmental detail. Cyberpunk 2077 can use all of those traditional techniques too, then add ray-traced ambient occlusion, diffuse illumination, reflections and shadows. Overdrive goes further with path-traced lighting, calculating indirect light through a much more demanding process.

Why Cyberpunk 2077 wins the maximum-effects contest
Ray-traced lighting changes more than reflections
Cyberpunk 2077’s ray-traced options cover ambient occlusion, diffuse illumination, reflections and shadows. Ambient occlusion helps contact areas such as a character’s boots against a floor or objects pressed into a wall. Diffuse illumination determines how light bounces from one surface to another, so colored neon can influence nearby pavement and walls rather than appearing only as a bright source. Ray-traced shadows can preserve more convincing softness and direction as a light moves through the scene.

Ray-traced reflections are especially obvious in Night City. Puddles, wet asphalt, windows, polished vehicles and metallic surfaces can reflect objects that are outside the camera’s immediate view or difficult for a conventional screen-space technique to retain. The improvement is not just sharper mirror imagery; it is fewer missing reflections and fewer sudden changes when the camera moves.
Overdrive is a separate performance class
Ray Tracing: Overdrive uses path-traced lighting rather than adding a few isolated ray-traced effects. Path tracing can produce more consistent indirect light and shadow relationships across a scene, but it requires substantially more computation. CD PROJEKT RED’s current support guidance recommends Overdrive on an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40 Series 4070 Ti or higher. That recommendation is a hardware floor for the intended experience, not a promise of a particular frame rate, resolution or upscaling result.
Because Cyberpunk 2077 publishes separate rasterized and ray-traced presets, “Cyberpunk has better graphics” is incomplete unless the selected preset is stated. A high-end PC running Overdrive is displaying a different level of lighting simulation from a console or a PC using the non-ray-traced preset.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhere the advantage is most visible
- Rain and wet streets: reflections remain connected to the surrounding architecture and moving objects instead of being limited to what the camera can currently see.
- Neon and mixed-color lighting: indirect light can carry colored illumination into nearby surfaces.
- Interiors: bounced light and shadow transitions can make rooms feel less uniformly lit.
- Dense city geometry: glass, metal, signage and vehicles provide many surfaces on which advanced reflections are easy to notice.
These gains are most apparent in motion and during camera changes. A paused daytime screenshot in a brightly lit area may show little difference between a good rasterized preset and ray tracing, while a rainy night drive can make the gap obvious.

Why Red Dead Redemption 2 can look more realistic
Consistency beats isolated effects
RDR2’s strength is not a single cutting-edge rendering feature. It is the way terrain, vegetation, sky, weather, fog, water, animation, color grading and lighting support the same visual idea. A sunrise changes the landscape gradually; clouds and haze alter distant contrast; dust, snow and rain affect what you can see; and animals and characters move with context-sensitive animation. The result can feel more like a photographed place even though the lighting is rasterized.
Landscapes and weather create a stronger sense of place
Mountains, forests, swamps, plains and towns are composed to read at multiple distances. Volumetric effects give smoke, mist and cloud layers depth. Weather transitions alter the palette and visibility instead of merely adding a screen overlay. Those changes make long rides through the world visually varied without requiring ray-traced effects.
This is why RDR2 can win a side-by-side impression on a television or a mid-range PC. If the competing Cyberpunk setup has ray tracing disabled to maintain a stable frame rate, Night City’s technical advantages are reduced, while RDR2 still delivers its complete environmental presentation.

The PC edition adds high-resolution and volumetric options, along with a quality slider. Rockstar Games describes the slider this way: “For quickest optimization, the ‘quality’ slider will analyze your PC’s performance capabilities and intuitively adjust a range of the background parameters according to your selected resolution and your preference for higher performance vs higher quality graphics.” Use it as a starting point, then refine demanding settings manually if you need a particular frame-rate target.

Lighting, reflections and shadows: a direct technical comparison
| Feature | Red Dead Redemption 2 | Cyberpunk 2077 |
|---|---|---|
| Primary lighting approach | Rasterized lighting with volumetric and shadow options; no ray-tracing pipeline at launch. | Rasterized rendering plus optional ray-traced ambient occlusion, diffuse illumination, reflections and shadows. |
| Path-traced mode | Not available. | Ray Tracing: Overdrive uses path-traced lighting. |
| Reflections | Rasterized techniques integrated into the world’s natural materials and weather. | Ray-traced reflections can preserve off-screen and moving-object reflections, with a substantial performance cost. |
| Indirect light | Artistically authored and rasterized; effective for the game’s natural scenes. | Ray-traced diffuse illumination and path tracing can model more complex light bounce. |
| Best-case visual character | Cinematic, natural and cohesive. | Technically advanced, especially in neon-lit, wet or enclosed scenes. |
Neither column makes the other obsolete. RDR2’s authored lighting can look excellent because artists control the scene’s composition, while Cyberpunk’s ray tracing can respond more physically to dynamic light and geometry. The practical winner depends on which behavior you notice more often during play.
Characters, animals and motion detail
Graphics quality is not only about lighting. Compare facial animation during conversations, cloth movement while characters ride or fight, hair and fur response, weapon handling, horse and vehicle motion, and the small contextual animations that connect a character to the environment.
RDR2 devotes considerable visual attention to animals, horses, clothing, mud, snow and everyday interactions. Its animation system reinforces the naturalistic tone: movement often has weight and transitional detail rather than snapping directly between poses. Cyberpunk 2077 focuses on human characters, vehicles, crowds and a dense urban simulation. Its strongest visual moments come from layered costumes, cybernetic detail, artificial lighting and busy streets.
These categories are difficult to score with a single winner because the games pursue different subjects. A horse crossing a foggy valley tests environmental animation and natural materials; a crowded night market tests character variety, signage, reflections and lighting density. Evaluate the scenes you will actually spend time playing instead of judging only a cinematic close-up.

Performance: the setting that decides the result
Cyberpunk’s visual ceiling has a large cost
Cyberpunk’s maximum visual effects can reduce performance substantially. Ray-traced reflections alone add workload, and Overdrive’s path-traced lighting raises the demand further. A technically superior image is not automatically the better experience if frame pacing becomes uneven or input response suffers.
Use the frame-rate target you can sustain, not a peak number reached in an empty test area. Dense crowds, driving through the city, combat effects, rain and large interiors can stress the renderer differently. If enabling ray tracing forces you to lower resolution or rely on aggressive upscaling, compare the final displayed image rather than the name of the preset.
RDR2 still requires careful tuning
RDR2 is not a lightweight game simply because it lacks ray tracing. High-resolution textures, volumetrics, shadows, water, reflections and distant geometry can all affect performance. Its quality slider can quickly establish a sensible baseline, after which you can prioritize the settings that matter most to your display and tolerance for frame-rate variation.
Official minimum requirements are not equal to a target experience
| Game and source | Published requirement or guidance | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Red Dead Redemption 2 PC minimum, Rockstar Games support | Windows 10; Intel Core i5-2500K or AMD FX-6300-class processor; 8 GB memory; GTX 770 or Radeon R9 280-class graphics; 150 GB storage. | This is a minimum specification for running the PC version, not a guarantee of high settings, high resolution or a fixed frame rate. |
| Cyberpunk 2077 Update 2.0 and Phantom Liberty requirements | CD PROJEKT RED publishes separate non-ray-traced and ray-traced presets, including a ray-tracing-low tier. | Choose the table row that matches your intended mode; a rasterized recommendation cannot be used to justify Overdrive. |
| Cyberpunk 2077 Ray Tracing: Overdrive | Current guidance recommends an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40 Series 4070 Ti or higher. | This is the developer’s recommendation for the path-traced mode, with resolution, frame-rate and upscaling still affecting the result. |
How to compare the games fairly on PC
- Choose a fixed output resolution. Test both games at the resolution your monitor or television actually uses. Do not compare a native 4K image in one game with a heavily upscaled 1440p image in the other without noting the difference.
- Set one frame-rate objective. Decide whether your priority is a stable 30, 60 or higher frame rate. Keep the target identical when moving between games.
- Record the upscaling setting. Note whether each game is rendering natively or using an upscaling mode, and keep image-sharpening choices comparable.
- Test Cyberpunk in separate modes. Compare its rasterized preset, conventional ray tracing and Overdrive as distinct presentations. Do not label all three simply “Cyberpunk graphics.”
- Use repeatable locations. In Cyberpunk, inspect a rainy night street, a reflective interior and a brightly lit area. In RDR2, inspect a landscape at dawn or dusk, a weather transition, a town and a detailed interior.
- Watch motion, not just stills. Pan the camera, drive or ride through the scene, observe reflections while moving and look for changes in shadow quality, foliage detail and image stability.
- Check frame-time consistency. A short peak reading can hide traversal stutter or drops during combat and crowds. Judge the smoothness you feel during ordinary play.
- Write down the hardware and preset. Include GPU, processor, memory, resolution, frame-rate target, upscaling mode and ray-tracing state whenever you share a screenshot or conclusion.
What to expect on consoles and modest PCs
The Overdrive recommendation is specifically tied to powerful PC graphics hardware, including the GeForce RTX 40 Series 4070 Ti and above. A console comparison therefore should not be framed as “Cyberpunk with Overdrive versus RDR2.” On console hardware, or on a PC that cannot sustain ray tracing, the practical contest is between Cyberpunk’s rasterized or lower ray-traced presets and RDR2’s rasterized presentation.

In that situation, RDR2 often feels more visually complete because its natural lighting, weather and animation remain intact without a high-end ray-tracing mode. Cyberpunk can still look striking through art direction, dense geometry, neon, character design and city scale, but the specific features that create its highest technical advantage are unavailable or too costly to use at the chosen performance target.
For a modest PC, start with each developer’s appropriate preset rather than copying screenshots from a high-end system. Lower the settings that have the largest performance impact, preserve the output resolution where possible, and only then decide whether a more advanced lighting mode is worth the reduction in smoothness.
Which game is more realistic?
RDR2 is usually more realistic as a complete natural environment. Its weather, terrain, animal behavior, animation and lighting transitions reinforce one another, so the world maintains a consistent physical mood while you travel through it.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Cyberpunk 2077 can be more physically convincing in selected lighting situations. Ray-traced reflections, diffuse illumination and Overdrive’s path-traced lighting respond to complex artificial light in ways a rasterized pipeline cannot reproduce as directly. Wet streets, neon signs, glass and interiors are the clearest examples.
“More realistic” therefore has two meanings: realism as a coherent lived-in world, where RDR2 excels, and realism as physically simulated light, where Cyberpunk’s ray-traced modes lead. Decide which meaning matters to you before declaring a universal winner.
A practical decision guide
Choose Cyberpunk 2077 if you have the hardware for its ceiling
- You use a modern high-end PC and want advanced ray-traced or path-traced lighting.
- You spend much of your time in night scenes, dense city streets, reflective interiors and neon-lit areas.
- You are willing to tune resolution, upscaling and other settings to maintain your chosen frame-rate target.
- You evaluate graphics as rendering technology as well as art direction.
Choose Red Dead Redemption 2 if you value consistency and natural detail
- You play on a console or PC where Cyberpunk’s advanced ray-tracing modes are unavailable or impractical.
- You care most about landscapes, weather transitions, volumetric atmosphere, animals and believable animation.
- You prefer a cinematic image that remains coherent across long rides and changing conditions.
- You want a scalable PC presentation that can be adjusted with the quality slider and individual settings.
If you own both
Play each with its strongest sustainable settings rather than forcing one game into the other’s technical profile. Give Cyberpunk a separate evaluation for rasterized rendering and ray tracing, and give RDR2 enough time to show its weather, landscape and animation systems. The most honest verdict may be that Cyberpunk supplies the more impressive technology while RDR2 supplies the more consistently beautiful world.
Final verdict
On a capable modern PC running ray tracing—especially Overdrive—Cyberpunk 2077 has better peak graphics. Its path-traced lighting, ray-traced reflections, diffuse illumination and shadows can produce effects RDR2’s launch-era rasterized pipeline does not attempt. Across consoles, modest PCs and comparisons focused on natural landscapes and visual continuity, Red Dead Redemption 2 is often the better-looking game. State the platform, resolution, upscaling, frame-rate target and Cyberpunk preset whenever you make the comparison; without those details, “better graphics” is too broad to be meaningful.
