It is a compelling fit for Android gaming, emulation, cloud gaming and game streaming—but not a universal iPad mini replacement. Its biggest caveats are game-dependent frame rates, a single USB-C port, uncertain regional stock, and the fact that the standard box may not include a charger.
The Astra launched globally in July 2025 after first appearing in China as the REDMAGIC Gaming Tablet 3 Pro. It is now an older model rather than a new 2026 release, so buyers should also compare its regional price and availability with the newer Astra 2 before purchasing.

What launched globally?
REDMAGIC announced the REDMAGIC Astra Gaming Tablet for selected international markets in July 2025. Contemporary reports put open sales around July 16, while REDMAGIC’s specification page shows a July 17 launch-related date. The important distinction is that “global” did not mean universal availability in every country.
The Astra is the international counterpart to China’s REDMAGIC Gaming Tablet 3 Pro. Its headline combination is unusual: a phone-class flagship chipset in a compact tablet, a high-refresh OLED panel, and an integrated fan intended to help sustain performance during long sessions.

Why the 165Hz OLED display matters
The 9.06-inch OLED panel is the Astra’s clearest advantage over ordinary compact tablets. REDMAGIC lists 2,400 × 1,504 resolution, 313ppi, DCI-P3 coverage, up to 1,600 nits peak brightness and 1,100 nits full-screen brightness. It also claims approximately ΔE 0.7 color accuracy, Corning Gorilla Glass and SGS-certified eye-comfort features.
OLED pixels can switch off individually, producing deeper blacks and strong perceived contrast. A 165Hz maximum refresh rate can make supported games, menus and scrolling look smoother, while the high touch-sampling figures are designed to reduce the delay between a finger movement and the tablet registering it.
However, 165Hz is a panel maximum, not a guarantee of 165 frames per second. The actual result depends on each game’s Android optimization, frame-rate cap, graphics settings, thermal conditions and network performance. A title locked to 60fps will not become a 165fps game simply because the Astra has a 165Hz screen.
Snapdragon 8 Elite and active cooling
The Astra uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite with Oryon CPU cores and an Adreno GPU. REDMAGIC also includes its RedCore R3 Pro co-processor, which the company describes as supporting gaming-focused functions such as display and frame-rate optimization. It should not be treated as a second flagship processor or as proof of a specific performance increase without independent testing.

For sustained gaming, the more unusual hardware is REDMAGIC’s 13-layer ICE-X cooling system. It combines liquid metal 2.0, vapor chambers, graphene and copper thermal layers, an aluminium-alloy mid-frame and a 20,000rpm turbo fan.
A fan can help a compact device maintain performance for longer than a purely passive design, especially in demanding games or emulation. The trade-offs are equally clear: fan noise, additional openings and moving parts, and the possibility that the chassis will still become warm. The 13-layer description is a hardware claim, not independent evidence of a particular temperature or frame-rate advantage.
REDMAGIC has separately claimed more than five hours of Honkai: Star Rail gameplay, 33 hours of movie playback, 5.3 hours of gaming while livestreaming and roughly 64 minutes for a full charge. Those are company figures, and real results will vary with brightness, game settings, network use, fan mode and charger.
Battery, charging and bypass charging
The Astra has an 8,200mAh dual-cell battery and supports fast charging. REDMAGIC also promotes bypass charging, which can route power more directly to the system during extended sessions instead of repeatedly charging the battery.
Buyers should check the exact regional listing before ordering. REDMAGIC’s global specification page says a charger is not included, while some early-bird or regional offers included an 80W charger. Confirm:

- whether bypass charging is available in the installed software version; and
- whether maximum charging speed requires a specific compatible charger.

REDMAGIC lists three global memory and storage options:

- 12GB RAM/256GB storage: the sensible entry configuration for most players.
- 16GB RAM/512GB storage: the likely sweet spot for large game libraries, emulators and multitasking.
- 24GB RAM/1TB storage: aimed at users who keep many large games, media files and apps locally.
The 24GB/1TB model is listed only in Eclipse black. Starfrost silver is available in the 12GB/256GB and 16GB/512GB versions, while Eclipse black is listed across all three configurations. Extra RAM and storage do not automatically raise frame rates; for most games, the chipset, software optimization and sustained thermals matter more.
Launch prices and current availability
Launch reports did not agree on a single US price. Depending on the source, promotion and timing, reported US prices ranged from $499 or $549 for the base model, $649 or $699 for 16GB/512GB, and $849 or $899 for 24GB/1TB. European and UK launch prices were reported as follows:

These figures should be read as historical launch pricing, not a universal current price list. As of the August 2026 storefront snapshot, REDMAGIC’s global store showed a $499 base listing marked out of stock, while another listing showed a $649 16GB/512GB configuration with estimated dispatch within three days. Stock, tax treatment, shipping, warranty coverage and return rights vary by region. Check the official product page for the exact configuration and country before paying.
Early launch incentives—including vouchers, finger sleeves and an 80W charger—were temporary July 2025 offers and should not be assumed to remain available.

Software and gaming features
REDMAGIC OS 10.5, based on Android 15, includes Game Space and gaming-oriented controls. A programmable Magic Key defaults to GameSpace, while customizable RGB lighting and dual X-axis linear motors add to the gaming-focused design.
These tools may appeal to enthusiasts who want performance profiles, macros or quick access to gaming controls. They may feel unnecessarily busy to someone looking for a minimalist general-purpose tablet. Android tablet scaling and game compatibility also vary: some titles may be capped below 165fps, show unusual aspect-ratio behaviour or lack polished tablet interfaces.
REDMAGIC’s cited materials do not establish a guaranteed long-term Android upgrade or security-support schedule, so buyers should not assume one.

The Astra measures 207 × 134.2 × 6.9mm and weighs 370g. Its metal middle frame and glass construction keep it portable, although a protective case, controller and stand add to the travel weight.
Its USB-C port supports charging, DisplayPort and USB 3.2 Gen 2. That makes external-display output and fast wired accessories possible, but there is only one port. Anyone wanting to charge, connect a controller, attach storage and output to a monitor may need a USB-C hub. DisplayPort output also requires an HDMI converter when connecting to an HDMI-only television or monitor.

The 13MP rear and 9MP front cameras are functional rather than central to the tablet’s value. A fingerprint sensor, gyroscope, compass, accelerometer and ambient-light sensor are included. IP54 means limited protection against dust and splashing; it is not waterproof and the tablet should not be submerged.
Who should buy the Astra?
Good fit
- Android players who want more screen area than a phone without carrying a large tablet.
- Competitive gamers whose titles support high refresh rates and touch controls.
- Emulation, cloud-gaming and game-streaming users.
- Players who value active cooling for long sessions.
- Buyers who need substantial local storage for games, emulators and media.
Consider something else
- Buyers who need cellular connectivity or a SIM slot.
- People who want a quiet, passively cooled tablet.
- Users prioritizing cameras, pen-based productivity, split-screen work or a mainstream tablet ecosystem.
- Anyone expecting every game to run at 165fps.
- Buyers in regions without reliable official stock, support or warranty coverage.
- Anyone paying close to newer Astra 2 pricing for this older generation.
Astra compared with the alternatives
The Astra’s case is not simply “more powerful tablet.” Its appeal is the specific combination of compact size, OLED contrast, up-to-165Hz refresh, Snapdragon 8 Elite hardware and active cooling.
An iPad mini is the more natural choice for buyers who value Apple’s ecosystem, mainstream app support and general-purpose tablet experience. The Astra instead offers Android flexibility, gaming controls and hardware designed around sustained play.

Compare the exact chipset generation, display type, refresh rate, regional software, cellular support and warranty rather than assuming one model wins from specifications alone.
A gaming phone is easier to carry and more likely to offer cellular service, but its screen is smaller. Larger Android tablets are better suited to productivity and split-screen work, while the Astra is easier to hold for gaming.
Bottom line
The REDMAGIC Astra remains interesting when its price is meaningfully below newer hardware and the buyer specifically wants a compact OLED gaming tablet with active cooling. The 165Hz panel, Snapdragon 8 Elite platform, 8,200mAh battery and gaming-focused software make it far more specialised than a typical small tablet.
It is not a guaranteed 165fps machine, a cellular tablet or a complete workstation. Before ordering, verify the regional stock status, exact RAM/storage tier, charger contents, warranty, return policy and whether Astra 2 offers better value at the same price.
