The original REDMAGIC Astra remains one of the most compelling compact Android gaming tablets in 2026—but only at the right price. Its 9.06-inch 165Hz OLED display, Snapdragon 8 Elite processor, serious cooling system and 8,200mAh battery deliver an excellent portable gaming experience. However, the newer Astra 2, uncertain regional software-support promises, no cellular option, mediocre cameras, weak speaker placement and a missing charger make the original Astra a conditional recommendation rather than an automatic buy.
Verdict
The REDMAGIC Astra is best understood as a gaming-first tablet rather than a small iPad replacement. It is unusually light at 370g, small enough to hold comfortably in landscape, and substantially more immersive than a phone without the bulk of an 11-inch tablet.

For native Android games, emulation, cloud gaming and remote play, the combination of a 9.06-inch OLED panel and Snapdragon 8 Elite performance is excellent. The tablet also does a better job than most thin tablets of sustaining performance during long sessions because of its active cooling system.

Its weaknesses matter more in 2026. The official US store lists the original Astra at $549 but currently shows it as out of stock, while the newer Astra 2 brings a faster 185Hz display and newer Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 hardware. The original model therefore makes the most sense discounted, refurbished or used with reliable warranty coverage.

What is the REDMAGIC Astra?
This review covers the first-generation REDMAGIC Astra Gaming Tablet, launched internationally in 2025—not the newer Astra 2. It is designed for buyers who want a high-performance Android gaming device larger than a phone but smaller and more handheld-friendly than a conventional 11-inch tablet.
The Astra uses a 9.06-inch, 16:10 display. That size is a useful middle ground: games are easier to see and control than on a phone, while the tablet remains comfortable to hold horizontally. It is portable, but it is not pocketable; expect to carry it in a bag or sleeve.
Conceptually, it sits between an iPad mini, a compact Lenovo Legion Tab and a dedicated Android gaming handheld. Unlike a handheld, it has no built-in controls. You will use touch controls or pair a Bluetooth or USB-C controller.

Design, size and portability
| Specification | REDMAGIC Astra |
|---|---|
| Dimensions | 207 × 134.2 × 6.9mm |
| Weight | 370g |
| Materials | Metal middle frame and glass construction |
| Colours | Eclipse Black and Starfrost Silver |
| Durability | IP54 splash and dust resistance |
The 370g weight is one of the Astra’s biggest advantages. Held in landscape, it feels closer to a large gaming screen than a traditional tablet. The 16:10 shape is also well suited to many games, although some video content may show black bars or require cropping.
REDMAGIC gives the tablet a distinctive gaming aesthetic, including RGB lighting and a transparent-style rear design. That styling will appeal to gaming enthusiasts, though it is more expressive than practical. The fan and cooling hardware also make the Astra feel like a specialised device rather than a restrained general-purpose tablet.
The body is thin enough to travel easily, but thinness creates compromises. Speaker grilles can be obstructed depending on your grip, and controller compatibility requires care. REDMAGIC says Bluetooth and USB-C controllers are supported, but a telescopic controller must accommodate a tablet that is 207mm wide and 6.9mm thick. A Bluetooth controller or tablet clamp is the safer choice.
IP54 means limited protection against dust and splashes. It does not make the Astra waterproof or suitable for immersion.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe 9.06-inch OLED display is the star
The Astra has a 2,400 × 1,504 OLED display with a 313ppi pixel density. It supports up to 165Hz, up to 2,000Hz touch sampling and 240Hz multi-finger touch sampling. REDMAGIC also lists 1,600 nits peak brightness, 1,100 nits full-screen brightness, DCI-P3 colour coverage, approximately ΔE 0.7 colour accuracy and SGS-certified eye protection. See the official specifications for the complete figures.
OLED makes an immediate difference. Blacks are genuinely deep, contrast is high and games with dark environments look more dramatic than they typically do on an LCD gaming tablet. The sharp resolution is appropriate for the size, while 165Hz makes compatible games, menus and scrolling feel fluid.
There is an important distinction between panel capability and game support. A 165Hz screen does not mean every game runs at 165 frames per second. Many Android games are limited to 60, 90 or 120fps, and higher refresh-rate modes may depend on the title, firmware, graphics settings or developer whitelist. Likewise, high touch-sampling figures do not automatically guarantee lower real-world input latency.

Running demanding games at the native resolution, high brightness and high refresh rate can also increase power consumption. Players who want longer sessions may prefer a lower refresh mode or reduced brightness when the visual benefit is small.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Gaming performance: flagship power in a small tablet
The original Astra uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite, paired with LPDDR5T memory and UFS 4.1 Pro storage. Configurations include 12GB RAM with 256GB storage, 16GB with 512GB and 24GB with 1TB, depending on region and colour.
Native Android games
High-end games such as Genshin Impact, Honkai: Star Rail, Call of Duty: Mobile, PUBG Mobile and Delta Force Mobile are natural workloads for the Astra. The Snapdragon 8 Elite provides substantial headroom, and independent reviews consistently describe the tablet’s gaming performance as excellent.
The larger screen improves visibility and gives virtual controls more room than a phone. However, a 9-inch screen is not automatically easier for every game. Touch targets near the centre or edges can require more hand movement, and players accustomed to a phone may need time to adjust.
Benchmark scores should be treated as snapshots rather than universal rankings. One video review reported an AnTuTu result of around 2.6 million and strong 3DMark stability, but results vary with firmware, performance mode, ambient temperature, test version and battery state. What matters more is whether the tablet maintains a stable experience over a long session.
Emulation
The Astra is particularly attractive for emulation. Its performance makes it well suited to demanding GameCube, PlayStation 2, Wii and Switch emulation workloads, provided the emulator and individual game are compatible.
Raw chipset power does not guarantee perfect emulation. Results vary by title, emulator version, graphics backend, shader compilation, resolution and controller mapping. Some Switch games can be problematic even on powerful hardware, while many older console titles run very well.
Storage also matters. A 256GB model can work for Android games and a modest library, but the 512GB configuration is a more comfortable choice for serious emulation. The 1TB model is aimed at users carrying a large local library rather than ordinary mobile gamers.
Cloud gaming and remote play
The OLED screen and compact format suit Xbox Cloud Gaming, GeForce NOW, Steam Link, PS Remote Play and local streaming through Moonlight. The absence of cellular connectivity is the main limitation. Away from Wi-Fi, you will need a phone hotspot or another internet connection.
For cloud gaming, network quality will usually matter more than the Snapdragon processor. A Bluetooth controller, stable Wi-Fi and a suitable stand may improve the experience more than paying for additional RAM.

Cooling and sustained performance
REDMAGIC uses a 13-layer ICE-X cooling system containing a vapor chamber, conductive materials, graphene, copper components, thermal gel and under-screen cooling elements. The aim is to reduce performance loss during long sessions rather than merely produce impressive short benchmark scores.
The tablet’s larger chassis gives the cooling system more surface area than a phone. Independent reviews report very strong sustained performance and thermal behaviour, although the device can still become warm under demanding workloads. Performance modes may increase heat, fan noise and battery drain.
There are four different questions to separate when judging the Astra:
- Peak performance: how fast it is during a short benchmark or burst.
- Sustained gaming: whether frame rates remain consistent after 30 to 60 minutes.
- Long emulation: how heat and fan behaviour affect an extended session.
- Charging while playing: whether extra heat and power draw reduce comfort or charging speed.
REDMAGIC also provides a bypass or charging-separation style feature for supported gaming scenarios. It can reduce battery stress and heat when configured correctly, but it is not a replacement for good ventilation or sensible charging habits.
Battery life and charging
The Astra contains an 8,200mAh dual-cell battery and supports 80W fast charging. REDMAGIC claims approximately 5.5 hours of full-frame-rate gaming, 5.3 hours of livestreaming and up to 33 hours of continuous video playback. Those are manufacturer estimates, not universal test results.
Independent testing is more useful but still workload-specific. Tom’s Guide reported nearly 12 hours of mixed use at full brightness and 165Hz with roughly one-quarter of the battery remaining, and measured a full charge in about 71 minutes with a compatible charger. Android Central reported nearly eight hours of gaming, while Tech Advisor observed roughly 15–20% battery loss during a one-hour gaming session depending on the game.
Those results are not contradictory. Brightness, refresh rate, frame rate, performance mode, fan operation, Wi-Fi activity, speaker volume, emulator settings, charging behaviour and ambient temperature all affect endurance. The 8,200mAh capacity is large for this size, but it does not guarantee a full day of demanding gaming.

REDMAGIC lists exceptions for some early-bird orders, Brazil and special campaigns, but buyers should assume they need an appropriate charger unless the specific listing says otherwise. The advertised 80W speed requires a compatible adapter.
Software and Game Space
The Astra ships with REDMAGIC OS 10.5 based on Android 15 according to the current official specification page. A physical Magic Key opens Game Space and can be customised for actions such as camera controls, the flashlight, voice recording, translation and sound-mode changes.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchSoftware support is the biggest long-term uncertainty
REDMAGIC’s update language is less straightforward than Apple’s or Samsung’s and varies by region and by whether the company means Android-version upgrades or security support. Tom’s Guide described a three-year software-update commitment including one major Android update, while Android Central reported a weaker two-update expectation. The current US product-page FAQ says customers in the EU and UK receive five years of software support, but that should not automatically be interpreted as five major Android upgrades.
Buyers should confirm the current promise for their market before purchasing. This is especially important for a device released before Astra 2, since longer-term update attention may shift toward the newer model.
Speakers, cameras and everyday use
Speakers
Speaker placement and audio quality are among the Astra’s weaker points. Depending on how it is held, the compact chassis can make the grilles easier to cover, and review coverage does not place the audio experience among the tablet’s strengths.
Headphones, Bluetooth audio or an external speaker are preferable for serious play. The built-in speakers are adequate for casual video and games, but they do not match the Astra’s display or performance.
Cameras
The tablet has a 13MP rear camera and a 9MP front camera. They are suitable for video calls, document capture and occasional snapshots, but they are not a reason to buy the Astra and will not replace a modern phone camera.
Productivity
Email, browsing, reading, comics and video playback are all comfortable enough, and the compact size is convenient when travelling. The limitation becomes clear with serious multitasking. Split-screen work, large documents, keyboard use and laptop-style workflows are more cramped than on an 11-inch or larger tablet.
The Astra is therefore a capable secondary tablet, but not the best laptop replacement. Buyers prioritising stylus work, cameras, office use or long-term tablet polish should look at an iPad, Galaxy Tab or larger premium Android tablet instead.

Astra 2
Astra 2 is the most important 2026 comparison. It keeps the 9.06-inch OLED concept but adds a faster 185Hz display, newer Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 hardware and updated cooling. If its regional price is close to the original Astra’s launch price, the newer model is the more sensible purchase.

- High sensitivity and precision: The stylus pen is designed with high sensitivity to ensure accurate and sensitive experience on various touch screen devices, without scratching the screen or leaving fingerprints such as fingers. It is very suitable for people with long nails or large fingers, allowing you to easily write, draw, slide, and click on touch screen devices.
- Two in one design:Providing you with two usage options, a smaller nib (0. 12inch/3mm) on one end and a larger nib(0.2inch/5mm) on the other end. Both rubber nibs of different sizes are replaceable, and the nibs are more accurate than fingers. They are very suitable for daily use on mobile phones and tablets, providing a smooth handwriting experience on the touch screen. Package contains 2 x stylus, 2 x 0.12'' replacing rubber tips, 2 x 0.2'' replaceable rubber tips, effectively extending the life
- Universal Compatibility: The two tips of the stylus are both compatible with various devices, such as iPad, iPhone, Android phones, tablets, and other capacitive touch screen devices. Suitable for all capacitive touch screens, it can protect your screen from scratches and provide smooth graphics.
iPad mini
The iPad mini is the stronger general-purpose tablet. It offers a mature tablet operating system, a deeper accessory ecosystem, strong resale and a clearer long-term platform-support reputation.
The Astra is the better fit for buyers who specifically want OLED contrast, a high refresh rate, Android emulation flexibility, gaming-focused controls, aggressive cooling and a large battery. Neither is categorically better; they serve different priorities.
Lenovo Legion Tab
The Lenovo Legion Tab is a serious alternative, but exact specifications and prices vary by generation and region. Compare the particular model’s panel technology, Snapdragon generation, cooling, software support, speakers, controller compatibility and availability rather than relying on the Legion Tab name alone.
Larger gaming tablets
An 11-inch or larger gaming tablet gives you more room for split-screen work, media viewing, virtual controls, speakers and cooling. The Astra counters with lower weight, easier handheld use and a more concentrated portable gaming experience.
Dedicated Android handhelds
A dedicated handheld provides integrated sticks and buttons, more console-like ergonomics and no need to assemble a tablet-and-controller setup. The Astra is more flexible for touch-first games, streaming, media and general Android use, but a separate controller adds cost and carrying friction.
Configurations, price and availability
The official US product page lists the original Astra at $549 and currently marks it out of stock. Listed configurations are 12GB/256GB, 16GB/512GB and 24GB/1TB. The Starfrost colour is not listed with the 1TB configuration on the official specifications page.
Configuration advice is straightforward:
- 12GB/256GB: enough for ordinary Android gaming, streaming and a modest emulation library.
- 16GB/512GB: the best balance for demanding games, emulation and local storage.
- 24GB/1TB: worthwhile mainly for users with a large local library or unusually heavy multitasking needs.
For a used or marketplace unit, inspect the display for burn-in or damage, confirm the software region, check that Google Play works, verify the included cable and charger situation, and insist on dependable return rights. Imported models may differ in language, firmware, warranty, network compatibility and update eligibility.
Who should buy the REDMAGIC Astra?
Buy it if:
- You specifically want a compact Android gaming tablet.
- OLED contrast and a 165Hz panel matter more than camera quality.
- You play demanding Android games or emulate older consoles.
- You value sustained performance and active cooling.
- You want more screen than a phone without carrying an 11-inch tablet.
- You can buy it at a meaningful discount from a seller with a dependable warranty.
Avoid it if:
- Long, clearly defined software support is your top priority.
- You need cellular data.
- You want excellent cameras or strong built-in speakers.
- You expect a charger in the box.
- You need a laptop replacement or serious split-screen productivity device.
- You want an integrated handheld with built-in controls.
- You are paying close to Astra 2 pricing.
Final recommendation
The original REDMAGIC Astra is not obsolete. Its 9.06-inch OLED display, light 370g body, Snapdragon 8 Elite performance, 13-layer cooling system and 8,200mAh battery still make it an exceptional compact Android gaming tablet.
But in 2026, it is a value product rather than the obvious latest-and-greatest choice. Buy it confidently at a substantial discount, especially in the 16GB/512GB configuration. At the original $549 price, it is only a conditional buy if Astra 2 is unavailable or significantly more expensive. For general tablet use, cellular connectivity, cameras or long-term software support, choose an iPad mini, larger premium tablet or another device designed around those priorities.
