The RedMagic Gaming Tablet 3 Pro is no longer just a pre-launch iPad mini rival. It launched in China under that name and later reached international markets as the REDMAGIC Astra Gaming Tablet. The compact Android gaming tablet combines a 9.06-inch 165Hz OLED display with Snapdragon 8 Elite hardware, active cooling and an 8,200mAh battery.
That makes it a compelling specialist gaming tablet, but not a straightforward iPad mini replacement. As of August 18, 2026, the biggest practical issue is availability: RedMagic’s U.S. Astra listing showed a $549 starting price but was marked out of stock when last crawled.

What happened to the RedMagic Gaming Tablet 3 Pro?
Early reports described a compact tablet scheduled for a China launch on June 11, 2025. The production device appeared in RedMagic’s Chinese store as the RedMagic Gaming Tablet 3 Pro, with the 12GB/256GB model listed at ¥4,599. (RedMagic China store)
For international buyers, RedMagic used a different name: REDMAGIC Astra Gaming Tablet. Consequently, searching only for “Gaming Tablet 3 Pro” may lead to China-market listings, while shoppers in the U.S. and other international markets should search for “RedMagic Astra.” RedMagic’s global launch material identifies the Astra as its compact gaming tablet for 2025. A 9.06-inch OLED display with 165Hz refresh rate
The tablet’s main advantage over the iPad mini is its larger, faster display:
| Specification | RedMagic Gaming Tablet 3 Pro / Astra | iPad mini |
|---|---|---|
| Display size | 9.06 inches | 8.3 inches |
| Panel | OLED | Liquid Retina LCD |
| Resolution | 2,400 × 1,504 | Apple’s iPad mini resolution varies by generation; the current mini uses an 8.3-inch Liquid Retina display |
| Refresh rate | 165Hz | 60Hz-class |
| Aspect ratio | 16:10 | 4:3 |
RedMagic lists a 90.1% screen-to-body ratio, up to 1,600 nits peak brightness, DCI-P3 wide color coverage and SGS eye-comfort certification. These are manufacturer specifications; the 1,600-nit figure is a peak claim rather than a promise of sustained full-screen brightness. (RedMagic Astra specifications)
The extra diagonal area gives games, emulators, videos and split-screen apps more room. OLED also generally provides deeper blacks and stronger perceived contrast than the iPad mini’s LCD. The 165Hz refresh rate can make supported games and scrolling feel smoother, but it does not make every game run at 165 frames per second. Actual frame rates depend on game support, Android optimization, performance settings, heat and battery mode.
“Compact like an iPad mini” needs some qualification. The Astra is compact compared with 10- to 12-inch tablets, but screen diagonal alone does not establish identical chassis dimensions or one-handed portability. RedMagic promotes its flat design, rounded corners, slim bezels and lack of a camera bump, but the device should not automatically be considered pocketable.

Snapdragon 8 Elite performance with active cooling
The global Astra listings specify Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite, RedCore R3 Pro gaming auxiliary hardware, up to 24GB of LPDDR5T RAM and up to 1TB of UFS 4.1 Pro storage. Regional configurations may instead offer 12GB or 16GB of RAM and 256GB or 512GB of storage. (RedMagic tablet comparison)
Its unusual feature for a tablet of this size is an internal 20,000rpm turbo fan. RedMagic also advertises a 13-layer ICE-X cooling system with dual vapor chambers and Liquid Metal 2.0. Active cooling is intended to help the tablet sustain demanding workloads for longer and reduce performance loss caused by heat.
That does not guarantee a particular frame rate or temperature. RedMagic’s cooling and efficiency figures are company measurements, not independent testing. The fan can also produce audible noise, especially during sustained gaming, making the tablet less appealing for quiet reading or media use. The 24GB model is aimed at enthusiasts and heavy multitaskers; it does not automatically make games faster than they would be on a 12GB or 16GB version.

The global Astra specification lists an 8,200mAh dual-cell battery with fast-charging support. Battery capacity is confirmed, but gaming endurance is not. Bright OLED output, a 165Hz mode, fan use and sustained Snapdragon 8 Elite loads can substantially change runtime. There is no responsible basis here for promising a specific number of gaming hours.
The international model runs REDMAGIC OS 10.5 based on Android 15. Its Game Space layer provides performance controls, notification management, recording tools and system optimization according to RedMagic’s own product information. The tablet also lists stereo speakers, dual X-axis linear motors and high touch-sampling capabilities: up to 2,000Hz instant touch sampling and 240Hz average touch sampling. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independently measured latency results. (RedMagic Astra specifications)
Bluetooth and USB-C controllers should broaden the tablet’s usefulness for native Android games, cloud gaming, PC or console streaming and emulation, subject to individual game, accessory and emulator compatibility. USB-C accessories may require adapters or obstruct charging depending on their design.

| Category | RedMagic Astra | iPad mini |
|---|---|---|
| Gaming focus | High-refresh display, active cooling and Android gaming controls | General-purpose tablet with strong mainstream app support |
| Display advantage | 9.06-inch OLED at 165Hz | Smaller 8.3-inch LCD |
| Operating system | Android 15-based REDMAGIC OS 10.5 | iPadOS |

| Portability | Compact for a gaming tablet, but exact dimensions and weight vary by regional documentation | Established small-tablet form factor with broad accessory support |
| Best suited to | Enthusiast gaming and long high-performance sessions | Reading, creative apps, everyday use and Apple ecosystem buyers |
The Astra is the better fit for someone who specifically wants OLED contrast, refresh rates above 60Hz, Android flexibility and active cooling. The iPad mini remains the safer choice for iPadOS-exclusive applications, Apple Pencil workflows, iPhone or Mac integration, mainstream accessories and a familiar long-term software platform.
China model versus global Astra
Import buyers should not treat the China model and Astra as interchangeable merely because they share the same compact design.
- Software: firmware, languages, Google Play availability, regional services and preinstalled applications may differ.
- Warranty: China-market warranty coverage may not apply in the buyer’s home country.
- Accessories: chargers, plugs and bundled accessories can vary by region.
- Connectivity: cellular support and regional bands, if offered for a particular SKU, must be checked separately.
- Cost: ¥4,599 is not a delivered U.S. price. Shipping, tax, import duties, currency conversion and return logistics can remove the apparent saving.
- Availability: the global Astra page showed a $549 starting price but was out of stock when last crawled. Stock should be verified before purchase.
For U.S. buyers, the global Astra is generally the less complicated target, but an in-stock China unit may appeal to experienced importers who understand the firmware and warranty trade-offs.

REDMAGIC Nova
The Nova is the more spacious alternative from RedMagic. It has a 10.9-inch 144Hz display, Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Leading Version hardware, an internal fan, a 10,100mAh battery and 80W charging. It is less compact but may suit buyers who value screen area and battery capacity more than portability. RedMagic’s U.S. page showed a $449 price signal and was also marked out of stock when crawled. Lenovo Legion Y700
The Legion Y700 is a key compact Android gaming-tablet rival. Pre-launch RedMagic coverage positioned the 3 Pro against a Legion Y700 generation with an 8.8-inch display. It may appeal to buyers who prefer Lenovo’s more conventional compact gaming-tablet design, but current pricing, specifications and availability should be verified for the exact generation and market. (Pre-launch comparison context)
Redmi’s compact gaming tablet
Pre-launch reporting described a Redmi compact tablet with an 8.8-inch 144Hz LCD, Dimensity 9400+, 67W charging, dual USB-C ports and gaming-focused cooling. Those were reported specifications rather than confirmed global retail specifications, so buyers should not assume that product or configuration is available in their region. (Reported Redmi specifications)
Who should buy the Astra?
Choose the REDMAGIC Astra when you want:
- a larger display than the iPad mini without moving to an 11-inch tablet;
- OLED contrast and a refresh rate above 60Hz;
- Snapdragon 8 Elite performance for Android gaming and emulation;
- active cooling for demanding sessions;
- large storage and controller-friendly gaming;
- and you are comfortable monitoring stock or buying through a specialist/import channel.
Choose the iPad mini instead when you prioritize:
- iPadOS applications and Apple Pencil support;
- Apple-device continuity;
- reading and general-purpose tablet use over sustained gaming;
- mainstream accessories and a familiar support model;
- or the smallest established Apple tablet footprint.
Choose the Nova instead when a larger 10.9-inch screen and bigger battery matter more than compactness, particularly if a reputable discounted listing is available.

Verdict
The RedMagic Gaming Tablet 3 Pro did launch, and the international version is the REDMAGIC Astra. Its 9.06-inch 165Hz OLED panel is larger and substantially more gaming-oriented than the iPad mini’s 8.3-inch 60Hz-class LCD, while Snapdragon 8 Elite hardware and an internal fan give it a clear specialist-performance focus.
It is best understood as a compact Android gaming tablet, not an “iPad mini killer.” The screen size does not prove identical portability, 165Hz does not guarantee 165fps, and battery, cooling and software claims should not be confused with independent testing. Before buying, confirm the exact regional SKU, firmware, warranty and stock status—the Astra name is the key to finding the international model.
