NIST’s REFPROP documentation gives the key placement rule for its Windows installation: “The new one belongs in the Refprop directory along with the executable.” That is a REFPROP-specific instruction, not a universal rule for every DLL on Windows.

How do I identify the program that is actually loading refprop.dll?
Fixing the wrong application can leave the error unchanged. Record the caller before changing files.

How do I find and deal with stale or duplicate REFPROP DLL files?
NIST’s FAQ discusses old REFPROP DLL copies as a cause of linking problems. A program can load the first matching file it finds according to its search order, so an old copy can win even when the current installation is intact.
Search with File Explorer
- In File Explorer, select This PC and search for
refprop.dll. Searching the whole drive can take several minutes. - For every result, note the complete folder path, file date, and the REFPROP installation or application that owns the folder.
- Keep the copy in the active, officially installed REFPROP directory. Treat copies under old backups, extracted archives, application folders, or previous version directories as suspects, not as files to delete immediately.

These commands repair protected Windows components. They do not place a missing REFPROP product DLL in the REFPROP directory, correct an RPprefix value, or reconcile two REFPROP releases. What should I do if refprop.dll is present but the error continues?
At this point, treat the problem as a compatibility or configuration issue rather than a simple missing-file issue.

How can I tell whether the problem is REFPROP-specific or a Windows problem?
If only one REFPROP-integrated application fails and ordinary Windows programs work normally, prioritize the REFPROP folder, caller path, duplicate copies, and compatibility checks.
