Arkane Lyon did not have to find a buyer by November 13, 2026, and then automatically close. That date marked the reported end of a French Works Council consultation and buyer-search process launched after Microsoft’s restructuring announcement. Microsoft later extended the consultation by one additional month while it explored options, including a partner to help finish and commercialize Marvel’s Blade. No buyer, sale agreement or final closure has been confirmed. The revised window was described by VGC as running into mid-December; December 13 is a reasonable calendar inference from a one-month extension, but Microsoft’s quoted statement did not publish a specific new date.
What did the November 13 deadline mean for Arkane?
November 13 was a procedural deadline, not proof that Arkane had already been sold or shut down. Reports from Le Monde and gaming outlets linked the date to the end of management’s consultation with the Works Council and the search for a buyer or other solution for Arkane Lyon.

French consultation rules require management to consult employee representatives before a major restructuring or closure. In this case, the process reportedly included looking for takeover options before Microsoft could complete any closure plan. The consultation was later extended, so the November date no longer represented the end of the process.
Has Arkane found a buyer?
No confirmed buyer has been named. Reports described several possible takeover paths, but neither Microsoft nor Xbox has announced a purchaser, a signed transaction or a final decision on Arkane Lyon’s future.

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma’s July 6 memo confirmed that Arkane’s management had begun the required Works Council consultation “to review potential strategic options.” The memo did not announce a sale or closure. Microsoft’s later statement likewise described an ongoing exploration of options rather than a completed deal.
Why was the consultation extended?
Microsoft told PC Gamer that it had “extended the consultation period by one additional month as we explore options, including finding a partner to support the studio through the development work still ahead.” The company called the change a defined extension and said it remained committed to keeping the Works Council informed.
That wording matters: Microsoft is considering more than a conventional ownership transfer. A development or publishing partner could help complete the remaining work on Marvel’s Blade without immediately announcing that another company has bought the entire studio.

What happens to Marvel’s Blade?
Marvel’s Blade is the central project in the partner search. Microsoft’s statement specifically connected potential outside support to the work still ahead on the game and its eventual commercialization.
Union representatives told Le Monde that production was nearing completion or virtually finished, but no release date has been confirmed. Xbox’s July restructuring memo also said that none of its publicly announced first-party games or projects were being cancelled as part of the reductions. That is not a release guarantee: the game’s schedule, staffing model and publishing arrangements remain unsettled while the consultation continues.
A union representative quoted by Gematsu described cancelling an unreleased game at this stage as “a monumental waste.” That comment reflects the stakes for employees and the project, not an announcement about its status.

How many Arkane jobs are at risk?
Approximately 217 positions were reported to be at risk at Arkane Lyon. The figure comes from reporting by Le Monde, as relayed by Gematsu and PC Gamer, and should be understood as an estimate tied to the restructuring process rather than a confirmed final layoff count.
The Arkane situation sits inside a much broader Xbox reduction. Sharma’s July announcement cited approximately 3,200 role eliminations across the business, including about 1,600 immediately. Xbox also said its broader business was losing an average of 64 cents for every dollar invested; that figure describes the company-wide rationale and does not measure Arkane or Blade specifically.
What is the timeline so far?
| Date | Development | Status |
|---|---|---|
| July 6, 2026 | Xbox announced approximately 3,200 role eliminations and said Arkane management was beginning a Works Council consultation to review strategic options. | Confirmed by Xbox |
| July 2026 | Reports said employees were told Xbox intended to close the studio and that French rules required a buyer search before a facility closure. | Reported by Le Monde and gaming outlets |
| October 23, 2026 | Reports identified November 13 as the consultation and buyer-search deadline, with several takeover possibilities and about 217 jobs at risk. | Reported |
| October 26, 2026 | Microsoft said the consultation had been extended by one month while it explored options, including a partner for remaining Blade development. | Updated by Microsoft’s statement to PC Gamer |
Is Arkane closing or being sold?
Neither outcome has been confirmed. The original reports described closure as a potential result if no solution emerged, while the consultation and buyer search were still underway. The extension keeps alternatives open, including a full acquisition, a partnership focused on Blade, or another strategic arrangement.

If a buyer emerges, the most important practical questions will be whether it can retain staff in Lyon, finance and ship Marvel’s Blade, provide publishing and distribution infrastructure, and support Arkane’s existing technology and creative teams. Employees and players will also want clarity on the long-term treatment of series such as Dishonored and Deathloop, as well as whether the studio can continue making immersive-sim games.

The reports concern Arkane Lyon in France. The Works Council consultation, French legal process and approximately 217 at-risk jobs described in coverage are specific to that studio.
Has Marvel’s Blade been delayed or cancelled?
There is no confirmed cancellation or public release date. Xbox said announced projects were not being cancelled in the July reductions, while the later consultation extension shows that staffing and production arrangements are still being worked out.
