For a first play, choose Resident Evil HD Remaster for RE1, the 2019 Resident Evil 2 remake for RE2, the 2023 Resident Evil 4 remake for RE4, and the 2020 Resident Evil 3 remake if you want the newer presentation. The original versions remain worthwhile when you want the historical design, documented bonus modes, or a different kind of replay. These are not simple resolution upgrades: the later remakes change camera systems, controls, pacing and, in some cases, story presentation. The right choice depends on whether you value classic survival-horror structure, modern third-person controls, or extras that only one edition includes.

What is the real difference between a Resident Evil original and its remake?
The remakes of RE2, RE3 and RE4 are substantially reimagined releases, not texture packs. Camera position, movement, encounter design and narrative emphasis can all change. RE1 HD Remaster is a special case: it is an HD edition of Capcom’s 2002 remake, not an unchanged 1996 game presented at a higher resolution.
Compare each pair on six practical questions:
- Camera and movement: fixed-camera rooms and tank-style movement create a different spatial challenge from an over-the-shoulder view and modern analogue controls.
- Exploration and resources: the older games generally make room layouts, key items and backtracking the central puzzle; newer editions may use more continuous combat spaces and contemporary checkpoints.
- Presentation: a remake can reinterpret characterisation, environments and set pieces rather than merely reproduce them.
- Documented extras: the original and remake may ship with different bonus modes, and those extras are not interchangeable.
- Edition contents: downloadable content and bundles can change what you receive on purchase.
- Purpose: a first play and a historical comparison are different goals. One version is not required to make the other valid.
Which versions are worth playing first?
- RE1: start with Resident Evil HD Remaster; choose the 1996 release for the earliest presentation.
- RE2: start with the 2019 remake if you prefer an over-the-shoulder camera; add the 1998 original for its distinct classic campaigns and bonus modes.
- RE3: start with the 2020 remake for modern presentation, but give the 1999 original priority if Mercenaries Mode matters to you.
- RE4: start with the 2023 remake for a modernized, reimagined campaign; play the 2005 edition afterward as a historical second experience.
How we picked
The ranking uses documented camera and control systems, the role of exploration and resource management, whether a release is an original or a reimagining, confirmed bonus content, current edition availability, and the difference between a first play and a historical comparison. It does not treat release year, review scores or sales figures as a substitute for those decisions.

Should you play Resident Evil HD Remaster or the 1996 original?
Choose Resident Evil HD Remaster for the clearest first encounter with the mansion survival-horror format. Choose the 1996 game when you specifically want the earliest version’s presentation and design history.
What the HD Remaster actually is
Capcom dates the underlying remake to 2002. The HD Remaster improves its backgrounds and presentation while preserving the remake’s mansion, puzzles, inventory pressure and fixed-camera structure. Calling it a prettier 1996 release is inaccurate because the 2002 production itself reworked the original game.
Does it still have tank controls?
Yes, the HD Remaster retains an original-style movement option. It also offers an alternate analogue-stick scheme, so you can use contemporary movement without losing access to the classic approach. The two schemes answer different preferences: tank controls make direction relative to the character and camera, while the alternate option is easier for players accustomed to modern third-person games.
When does the 1996 original make sense?
The original is the right choice if you want to see how the first release established the series’ visual language, room transitions and pacing before the 2002 reinterpretation. It is a separate purchase from the HD Remaster, not an unlock or alternate mode inside it. GOG’s maintained PC listing supports Windows 10 and Windows 11 and advertises modern-controller support, but that does not mean the classic game gains the HD Remaster’s alternate movement design.
Is the Resident Evil 2 original still worth playing?
Yes. The 1998 game remains worthwhile for its classic scenario structure and documented bonus content, while the 2019 remake is the easier starting point for players who expect modern camera and controls.
What changes in the 2019 remake?
Capcom documents an over-the-shoulder perspective and modern controls. Leon and Claire have separate campaigns, giving the remake two protagonist routes rather than a single linear run. The new viewpoint changes how you read rooms, manage threats and approach combat, so it is better understood as a reinterpretation than a visual clean-up of the 1998 game.

What does the 1998 version add?
GOG’s listing identifies separate Leon and Claire adventures and classic bonus content, including Extreme Battle and access to 4th Survivor and Tofu. Those modes provide a concrete reason to return to the original even after finishing the remake. They also make the older release more than a museum piece: its scenario logic and challenge modes are part of what you are buying.
Should you play both campaigns?
Play both protagonists in whichever edition you choose if you want the fullest version of that release. The documented information supports treating the campaigns in each edition as distinct routes, but it does not establish that every scenario interaction is reproduced identically between 1998 and 2019. Avoid assuming that a scene, route or trigger in one version must occur in the other.
What does the original Resident Evil 3 have that the remake does not?
The clearest documented difference is the bonus mode: the 1999 original includes Mercenaries Mode on GOG, while Capcom describes the 2020 remake as including Resident Evil Resistance, a separate one-versus-four online game. Those are different kinds of extras, so neither should be presented as a replacement for the other.
Why choose the 2020 remake?
The remake is the modern-presentation route. Its updated production and control expectations make it the less demanding entry for players who do not want a late-1990s interface or movement model. Select it when your priority is reaching RE3’s characters and premise through a contemporary action-horror framework.
Why keep the 1999 original in your plans?
Mercenaries gives the original a verified replay feature that the remake’s Resistance mode does not duplicate. The classic release is also readily accessible on a current Windows PC through GOG. Claims about specific streets, buildings, bosses or branching decisions being cut from the remake are not established here, so the sound comparison is the documented extras and presentation rather than an unsourced cut-content checklist.
What kind of multiplayer is Resistance?
Resistance is described as a separate 1-versus-4 online game bundled with the remake listing. It is not the original’s solo Mercenaries format and should be chosen only if that asymmetric online structure appeals to you. If you want a self-contained score-attack style side mode, the original’s Mercenaries is the directly documented match.

Does the Resident Evil 4 remake include Separate Ways?
It depends on the edition. The 2023 remake’s base game requires Separate Ways as separate DLC, while the documented Gold Edition includes it with the Extra DLC Pack. The 2005 PC edition already includes previously released bonus content such as Separate Ways.
Why start with the 2023 remake?
Capcom presents the remake as modernized and narratively reimagined. That makes it the stronger first choice for players who want current control expectations, refreshed encounters and a new interpretation of Leon’s campaign. It is also a complete starting point rather than a sequel that assumes you have finished the 2005 game.

The original shows the design that established RE4’s action-horror identity and supplies Separate Ways in the current PC edition without requiring the remake’s separate DLC purchase. Its value is comparative: after the remake, you can see which pacing, encounters and story beats were retained, rearranged or reinterpreted instead of treating the older game as a prerequisite.
Check the edition before buying
On the remake, buying the base edition does not automatically grant Separate Ways. The Gold Edition is the documented package that includes the DLC; otherwise, plan for a separate DLC purchase. On the 2005 Steam listing, Separate Ways is part of the PC edition’s included bonus content. Store pages can change, so confirm the contents displayed for your region and edition at checkout.
Can you play the original Resident Evil games on a modern PC?
Yes. GOG maintains Windows listings for the original RE1, RE2 and RE3 and describes compatibility with Windows 10 and Windows 11 plus support for modern controllers. Capcom also lists the originals and remakes as separate digital purchases in its US store collection.
What to expect from the GOG versions
- The listings are preserved Windows editions, not remakes with modern cameras.
- Controller support improves setup convenience but does not alter the original games’ movement rules or interface.
- Buying an original does not grant its remake, and buying a remake does not grant the original unless a store page explicitly says so.
A Sony DualSense wireless controller is an optional Windows input device for the supported PC listings; it is not required, and no RE-specific haptic feature should be assumed. The practical requirement is a compatible Windows installation and a controller or keyboard setup you find comfortable.

What is the Resident Evil Remake Trilogy bundle, and what is missing?
Capcom’s announced Remake Trilogy contains Resident Evil 2 Deluxe Edition, Resident Evil 3 with Resistance, and Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition with Mercenaries. Resident Evil HD Remaster is not listed in that bundle.
Check the itemised contents before purchasing. Capcom notes that the bundle’s components can also be bought individually, so the package is not a substitute for owning the first game’s HD Remaster or the 1996 original. The publisher’s general collection also lists other Resident Evil titles, but they are outside this RE1–RE4 original-versus-remake comparison.
How should you choose if you plan to play every pair?
- Begin with the version whose camera matches your tolerance. Fixed-camera survival horror points toward HD Remaster or an original; an over-the-shoulder view points toward the RE2, RE3 or RE4 remakes.
- Play the companion version for contrast rather than obligation. The original RE2’s bonus modes, original RE3’s Mercenaries and original RE4’s included Separate Ways are concrete reasons to revisit specific releases.
- Verify edition contents before downloading. Separate Ways is the key RE4 distinction, and the Remake Trilogy does not include RE1 HD Remaster.
- Use the modern PC listings when access is the concern. GOG’s Windows 10/11 listings remove the need to locate an old console, while preserving the classic games’ original design.
That route gives you the strongest first-play experience for each game without erasing what the originals contribute. It also avoids treating every remake as a definitive replacement when the documented extras and design goals differ.
