Respawn moved Apex Legends game-server traffic to Amazon GameLift Servers in a phased cutover that AWS says took 10 days and caused no player-facing downtime. The migration aimed to modernize hosting and handle demand while preserving the teams’ development workflows. The account comes from AWS, which supplied the service, so its reported outcome is not an independent performance audit.
What changed in the Apex Legends server migration?
Respawn moved the game’s server traffic from a hybrid bare-metal hosting arrangement to Amazon GameLift Servers, a cloud-based hosting platform. AWS says the work was done with Code Wizards Group and used the Amazon GameLift Migration Support Program. The migration changed the hosting infrastructure; AWS says the teams aimed to retain the existing server build and backend logic.
AWS’s May 12, 2025 account describes the traffic cutover as lasting 10 days. It does not say that 10 days was the duration of all evaluation, engineering, or preparation work.
Why did Respawn move Apex Legends to GameLift?
AWS says Respawn’s goals were to scale for seasonal and event demand, modernize its hosting, and maintain development velocity. Those are stated objectives, not evidence that the migration produced a measured improvement in capacity, player experience, or development speed.

AWS says Amazon GameLift can support up to 100 million concurrent players. That is the service’s capacity claim in the case study, not a count of Apex Legends players or a measurement of the game’s own capacity after migration.
How did the cutover work without taking the game offline?
AWS describes a phased, region-by-region rollout supported by a redirect layer, a server wrapper, testing, monitoring, and rollback plans. The case study says the teams first evaluated whether the main matchmaking and server-placement flow would work, whether updates could happen without disrupting players, and whether they had the required metrics and observability.

- Route traffic to GameLift. Code Wizards developed a player redirect layer that AWS says routed players to GameLift without requiring changes to backend logic.
- Adapt the existing server build. A game-server wrapper let the teams use their existing server build while adding logging and observability.
- Prepare updates and test in production-like conditions. AWS says automation moved players to upgraded servers after their matches ended. Before the cutover, the teams conducted production-level testing, benchmarked instances, and tuned performance.
- Cut over in stages. The migration began in the smallest geographies and proceeded region by region. Before launch, the teams set rollback thresholds, checked alerting, and ran mock migrations.
- Monitor player-facing measures. During the rollout, the team watched connectivity, latency and jitter, queue times, and match-placement success.
AWS reports that the process finished without player-facing downtime. It does not publish the underlying monitoring data or define the thresholds used to make that determination. Robert LaCruise, Principal Technical Director, Online Gaming Services for Apex Legends, said in AWS’s account: “Minimizing the disruption for our player population was a critical success factor for the migration. The coordinated effort between Respawn and the Amazon GameLift Servers team made this a reality.” Jared Cugno, Head of Engineering for Apex Legends, said: “Player-facing goals were formalized into our architecture designs… ensuring that zero downtime deployments were a reality from start to finish.”
What the public account does—and does not—show
The AWS case study establishes the stated goals, broad rollout approach, monitoring categories, and AWS’s report of no player-facing downtime during the 10-day cutover. It does not provide independent or before-and-after figures for latency, jitter, queue times, reliability, or cost. Monitoring a metric is not proof that it improved, and the stated scaling goal is not a published result.

The account also does not establish that later player reports of connection or matchmaking problems were caused by the migration, or that every player’s experience improved. Such claims require separate, dated evidence and should distinguish individual reports from platform-wide measurements.

- How the platform handles demand spikes and regional capacity.
- Player-facing latency, jitter, and connection quality, measured before and after under comparable conditions.
- How updates, player transfers, and rollback behave during live service.
- Whether logging, alerting, and observability support troubleshooting.
- How well the service fits existing server builds and development pipelines.
- Total cost for the actual workload, rather than a general capacity claim.
AWS’s account does not name competing hosting providers or publish comparable results, so it cannot establish that GameLift outperformed a particular alternative on these measures.
