For ordinary daily use, put your PS5 in Rest Mode. It keeps a suspended game or app ready, can charge a DualSense controller, download games and updates, and wake for Remote Play when those features are enabled. Choose Power > Turn Off PS5 when you want the console completely inactive, are leaving it unused for a long time, or need a full power cycle. Whichever option you choose, use the on-screen command and wait for the indicator to finish changing before disconnecting the AC cable.
What is the difference between Rest Mode and turning off a PS5?
Sony defines three PS5 power states: on, Rest Mode and off. Rest Mode is the low-powered state; a white indicator means the console is on, orange means Rest Mode, and no light means it is off. Turning the console off ends the background functions that Rest Mode can provide.

What does Rest Mode let a PS5 do?
Rest Mode is more than a display-off setting. In Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode, you choose which low-power functions remain available.
Charge a controller over USB
Enable USB power in Rest Mode and the PS5 can continue supplying power to a connected DualSense. The exact USB-power option and its duration depend on the setting shown on your console. Charging stops when the console is fully off.

Download games, pre-orders and updates
With Stay Connected to the Internet enabled, the PS5 can download PlayStation App transfers, pre-ordered content, game updates and system-software updates while in Rest Mode. If that setting is disabled, the console cannot perform those network tasks in Rest Mode.
Keep an application suspended
Rest Mode can preserve a suspended game or app so you can return more quickly. Suspension is not a substitute for saving: a crash, forced shutdown or system issue can still lose unsaved progress, so use the game’s own save command.
Wake for Remote Play
Remote Play requires Remote Play itself, an internet connection and network-wake options to be enabled. Rest Mode is the state that lets the console wake for a remote connection; a fully powered-off PS5 cannot be woken this way.

How much electricity does Rest Mode use?
Rest Mode uses less power than an active PS5, but it is not zero-power operation. Sony says that enabling more Rest Mode features increases consumption and that the console does not automatically drop below 0.5 W when those features are enabled. Sony’s guidance does not provide a universal model-by-model wattage or electricity-cost table, so a precise household cost depends on the console, enabled features, local electricity rate and time spent in Rest Mode.
If your priority is the lowest possible standby activity, select Power > Turn Off PS5. That choice sacrifices background downloads, USB charging and network wake until you turn the console on again.
When should you shut the PS5 down completely?
Use Power > Turn Off PS5 when convenience features are not needed and you want the system inactive.

- Extended storage: A full shutdown is appropriate when the console will sit unused for an extended period.
- Troubleshooting: Follow the support step you were given; some problems require a complete shutdown rather than Rest Mode.
- Power or network changes: Turn the console off before moving it, changing cables or working on connected equipment.
- Lowest standby activity: Off is the only state in this guide with the indicator fully unlit and Rest Mode services stopped.
Sony documents Restart PS5 separately. Restarting turns the console completely off and then back on, which can clear a temporary software condition without leaving you to start it manually.
How do you enter Rest Mode or shut down safely?
- Press the PS button to open the control centre.
- Select Power.
- Choose Enter Rest Mode, Turn Off PS5 or Restart PS5, depending on the result you need.
- Wait for the power indicator to settle: orange for Rest Mode or no light after a full shutdown.
Never pull the AC cable while the indicator is lit or blinking. Sony warns that interrupting power can cause data loss or corruption and may damage the console. If the light is still changing, leave the cable connected until the transition finishes.
Is Rest Mode bad for a PS5?
Sony describes Rest Mode as the PS5’s intended low-power state, not as a fault condition. The practical trade-off is power consumption: each enabled feature adds background activity, while turning the console off removes those functions. Keep the console ventilated and use the on-screen power controls rather than cutting power at the outlet.

Downloading in Rest Mode depends on the console’s internet and power-saving settings, not on a PlayStation Plus subscription. Paid access may be required for particular online services, but the Rest Mode download function itself is controlled under Settings > System > Power Saving.
Why is my PS5 light orange instead of white?

Can I unplug my PS5 immediately after selecting Turn Off PS5?
No. Wait until the indicator stops flashing and goes completely dark. Removing AC power while the light is lit or blinking can corrupt data or damage the console.
Will Remote Play work if my PS5 is fully powered off?
No. Remote Play wake-up requires the PS5 to be in Rest Mode with Remote Play, an internet connection and network-wake settings enabled. A fully off console is not available for remote wake.
