If you’re returning to World of Warcraft after a long break, keep your old Battle.net account, make sure you have game time, install the modern Retail client, and start with the Catch Up Experience if it appears at character select. Then use The War Within recap and the Midnight campaign to get oriented and move toward the current level cap. You do not need to finish every old expansion first—and buying Midnight does not replace a subscription.
What do you need before you can play?
There are three separate checks: access to the right Battle.net account and WoW license, active subscription or game time for high-level play, and the Midnight expansion entitlement for Midnight content. A character appearing in the list does not mean the account has active game time.

Blizzard’s Battle.net Shop says a subscription includes modern WoW through level 80 without buying the current expansion. Midnight is sold separately, and its shop listing says it requires a WoW subscription or game time. In other words, buying Midnight grants expansion access; it is not a substitute for paid play time. Future expansions are not included with the Midnight purchase.
Midnight launched globally on 2 March 2026. The current level cap is 90, according to returning-player guides covering Midnight; the Battle.net subscription listing’s level-80 description reflects what subscription access includes without the expansion, not the current expansion’s cap.

How do you renew your WoW subscription?
Choose a recurring subscription if you want automatic renewals, or non-recurring game time if you want to pay for a fixed period without a recurring charge. The following US prices were displayed by the Battle.net Shop on 29 October 2026; check the shop for your region and the current offer before purchasing.
| Access option | Price shown | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| 1-month subscription | $14.99 per month | Recurring subscription; auto-renews. |
| 3-month subscription | $13.99 per month; $41.97 billed every 90 days | Recurring subscription; auto-renews. |
| 6-Month Special Offer | $12.99 per month | Recurring subscription; auto-renews. The offer name and displayed monthly rate are from the shop listing. |
| 12-Month Special Offer | $12.99 per month | Recurring subscription; auto-renews. The offer name and displayed monthly rate are from the shop listing. |
| 60-day prepaid game time | $29.99 USD or €25.98 | Non-recurring. The price comes from Wowhead’s guide, last updated 5 June 2024, and may not match current regional listings. |
To use prepaid time, redeem the code through Battle.net’s Code Management or Account Management page. Wowhead’s guide describes the card as available through Amazon and other retailers; availability can vary, so verify the seller and exact product before buying. Battle.net Balance can buy game time, but it cannot fund a recurring subscription.
If you have enough in-game gold, a WoW Token is another documented way to add 30 days: buy one through the Auction House, or use the character-select option to reactivate with gold if it is available to your lapsed account. The live gold price changes, and no fixed current price is established here. Avoid treating a quoted price from another day as a reliable current cost.
Midnight’s live regional edition prices were not shown in the Battle.net Shop information available for this article. Check the regional Battle.net offer for the current Base, Heroic, or Epic price rather than relying on older third-party price tables. The Midnight listing says an Enhanced Level 80 Character Boost is included; the Base edition also lists Housing access, The War Within if missing, and 500 Trader’s Tender. The Epic edition has historically included 30 days of game time and cosmetic extras, but confirm the current edition details before purchasing.
How do you recover your old WoW account?
Recover the original Battle.net account rather than creating a new one. Characters, collections, and Warband data are associated with the old account; a lapse in subscription does not delete characters. Instead, the account returns to Starter Edition restrictions until you add game time.
- Find the account. Use Blizzard’s “Can’t Log In?” account-recovery path to locate the account and reset its password. If you have multiple Battle.net accounts or WoW licenses, make note of which one holds your characters.
- Resolve sign-in barriers. Follow the recovery process for an account lock or authenticator issue. If self-service recovery does not work, contact Blizzard Support and request help from a Game Master.
- Secure a potentially compromised account. Secure the computer and the email account connected to Battle.net, request restoration if needed, change the password, and attach a Battle.net Authenticator.
- Check the account after signing in. Confirm the region, selected WoW license, and whether that license has active time. A visible character list alone does not confirm that the subscription is active.
When paid time runs out, high-level characters remain on the account, but the account returns to Starter Edition restrictions: play is limited to level 20, with limits on gold, Auction House access, mail, trading, and chat. After upgrading from Starter Edition, Wowhead notes that some restrictions can take up to 72 hours to clear; resetting the password may refresh account status. If access still looks wrong after that, verify the selected license and contact support rather than starting over with a new account.
Which WoW client should you install?
Choose the client that matches the game your friends play. “WoW” can mean modern Retail, one of several Classic versions, or the separate WoW: Forever product. Those are different Battle.net products, and their characters do not simply become interchangeable because they share a launcher.
| Product | Choose it if… | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Modern World of Warcraft (Retail) | You want the current Midnight expansion, its campaign, current raids, or modern Warbands. | Midnight is the current expansion; it launched 2 March 2026 and raises the cap to 90. |
| WoW Classic | You want a particular Classic experience or your friends have named a specific Classic version. | The launcher includes multiple versions, including Era, Mists of Pandaria Classic, Anniversary, Hardcore, and Season of Discovery. Confirm the exact version and realm. |
| WoW: Forever | You want its reimagined level-1-to-60 world rather than current Midnight progression. | As of 2 November 2026, its listed launch is still upcoming: 4 November 2026 at 3:00 p.m. PST. It is a separate install and character set. |
Blizzard says WoW: Forever access is included with an active WoW subscription or game time. That does not make it the modern Midnight client: Forever is a distinct product built around a reimagined 1–60 journey, with more than 1,000 new quests, additional zones, and its own rulesets. If friends only say they are “playing WoW,” ask which product, version, realm, and—in Forever’s case—ruleset they mean before making a character.

Will your computer run modern WoW?
The Battle.net Shop’s 2026 system requirements list Windows 10 64-bit, a four-core 3.0 GHz-class CPU, a DirectX 12 graphics card with 3 GB of graphics memory, at least 8 GB of RAM, and an SSD with 128 GB of available space. Blizzard recommends 16 GB of RAM and a multi-button mouse with a scroll wheel. Check the current shop requirements for your operating system before installing, especially if the computer has little SSD space or older graphics drivers.

If the Catch Up Experience appears at the Campsite—the character-selection screen—Blizzard recommends taking it. The official return guide says you can either resume where you left off or start the tutorial; skipping it does not remove it, because it remains in Adventure Guide (Shift+J) under Tutorials.
- Select Catch Up Experience at the Campsite. It sends the character to the Arathi Highlands to help Thrall and Jaina. The scenario hides the existing quest list while you work through it; leaving the sequence does not delete those old quests.
- Refresh your class basics. The tutorial uses Assisted Highlight to show a recommended next damage ability and revisits class flow. Healing, defensive abilities, and buffs remain your responsibility.
- Practice Skyriding and interrupts. The catch-up sequence covers these systems along with combat, so you can relearn the essentials before moving into current content.
- Take the gear and next-step suggestions. It awards gear appropriate to the character and offers tailored suggestions for what to do next.
- Skip only if you already know what you want. If you choose to jump straight in, you can later reopen the tutorial through Adventure Guide (Shift+J) > Tutorials.
Eligibility is described as more than 60 days away in the official partner catch-up video and in JudgeHype’s coverage; Blizzard’s English return article does not state that threshold. If the option is absent, use the Tutorials tab if available, then proceed through the current campaign rather than assuming your characters or quests are gone.
How can you make combat easier while relearning?
Assisted Highlight is an optional prompt, not an automated rotation. Find it under Esc > Options > Gameplay Enhancements; it highlights the next recommended damage ability while leaving healing, defensive abilities, and buffs manual. It can help rebuild familiarity without requiring a large addon setup.
The Single-Button Assistant is another optional accessibility and relearning aid. Open the Spellbook with N, find the assistant in the upper-right area, and drag it to an action bar. It cycles through a prioritized set of spells, with a small extra global-cooldown cost. It is a practical way to get moving again, not a replacement for learning how your current talents and abilities work.
What story should you play to catch up?
You do not have to complete old expansions in release order. If you missed The War Within, use its accelerated recap to revisit the story from the Isle of Dorn through K’aresh, then follow the Midnight campaign’s shielded exclamation-mark quests toward level 90.
Use the recap for context, not as a reason to stall
The War Within recap condenses the expansion into a shorter play-through with key cinematics; published returning-player guidance describes it as a route that can take a few hours, not a fixed leveling-time guarantee. It is also used for the level 70–80 stretch instead of requiring the full expansion campaign. If you mainly need the plot and current progression, it is a more focused route than clearing every old zone.

Follow Midnight’s campaign markers
After the recap or other suitable leveling, pick up the Midnight campaign and follow its shielded “!” quests. They are the clearest current story spine for approaching the level-90 cap. Old side quests can wait unless you specifically want their story, achievements, or rewards.
Use curated story options selectively
Lorewalker Cho in Stormwind, Orgrimmar, or Dornogal offers curated storylines from level 10, including Blood Elves and Void Elves, Xal’atath, Ethereals, and The Lich King. These routes award a toy and Housing decor, making them an optional way to explore older lore rather than a required catch-up step.
Story Mode is available for Dragonflight and The War Within raid narratives after reaching max level and meeting the relevant campaign requirements. It can help you see those older raid stories, but it is not a substitute for Midnight’s current raid content.
Which character and progression path should you choose?
For most returning players, the character with the most familiar controls and completed account progress is the simplest starting point. If you have Midnight, its included Enhanced Level 80 boost is another option, but a boost skips some of the gradual relearning that the Catch Up Experience provides. You can also play a Warband alt or start fresh; choose based on whether you value continuity, a shortcut, or relearning from level one.
- Old main: Best if you want your existing character, collections, achievements, and familiar role. Confirm its talents and action bars before joining a group.
- Another Warband character: Useful if you want to revisit a different class while keeping shared account progression and collections.
- Enhanced Level 80 boost: Included with Midnight according to Blizzard’s shop listing. It gives a quick entry point, but you may need to spend time reviewing the class before difficult group content.
- Fresh character: A slower, more guided re-entry if you want to relearn abilities and experience leveling. It is not necessary just because your subscription lapsed.
Once you are ready to progress, pick one current lane instead of trying to catch up everywhere at once. Delves and outdoor content are natural low-pressure options; dungeons, raids, PvP, and Prey suit different interests and comfort levels.
| Starting lane | Good fit if you want… | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Delves | Short, solo-friendly content or a small group activity. | Instances for solo or up to five players, with a talent-tree NPC companion. Delves appear in The War Within and Midnight zones; Midnight’s companion is Valeera Sanguinar, while Brann is associated with The War Within. |
| Outdoor campaign and patch content | Questing, story, and activity without committing to a group schedule. | Follow Midnight campaign quests and current outdoor objectives; use the Journeys tab to track progression. |
| Prey | A focused hunt with added danger. | Elite targets can hunt you back. The system is season-tied, so check current in-game availability. |
| Normal or Heroic dungeons | Five-player group play with a defined route and boss encounters. | A step toward group comfort before taking on more demanding organized activities. |
| Raid Finder | A more structured raid experience with a lower coordination burden than a scheduled group. | Use it when your character and current progression are ready; do not rely on old season gearing tables for current requirements. |
| Rated PvP | Competitive player-versus-player play. | Better approached when you understand current class talents and the active season’s systems. |
Which modern WoW systems are worth learning first?
Warbands, updated flying, transmog, and the Journeys panel make modern WoW feel different from older versions. Learn only what helps your immediate return; Housing, professions, and collection projects can wait until your character is functional.

Warbands and the Campsite
Warbands bring characters across your Battle.net account together in one Campsite and include shared Renown, a Warband bank, achievements, and appearance sharing across eligible classes and gear types. You can mark favorites and customize the Campsite background. It is an account-wide system, but it does not merge characters from different Battle.net accounts or turn Classic characters into Retail characters.
Journeys and the Great Vault
The Journeys tab in the Adventure Guide centralizes tracking for Renown, Delves, Prey, and the Great Vault in Midnight. Use it to see what you have done and what remains for your chosen current progression lane. At reset, review the Great Vault and Journeys panel instead of following an old guide’s season-specific checklist.

Skyriding and Steady Riding
Skyriding is the current name for the flight style formerly called Dragonriding. Vigor has been removed; Surge Forward and Skyward Ascent share six charges. At level 20, use the mount tab to switch Flight Style; changing to grounded Steady Riding has a five-second cast. Khaz Algar keeps Skyriding locked until The War Within Pathfinder, and a few mounts—including certain ottuks, fish, and brooms—cannot use it.
Transmog and Housing
Transmog now supports saved full outfits, extra outfit slots purchased with gold, and placing outfits on the action bar. Older legacy transmogs were converted to Custom Sets. Midnight Housing is available to everyone without a lottery, purchase cost, or upkeep, and is shared across a Warband with cross-faction visits. It is a substantial side system, but it is not required to gear or level a returning combat character.

Use a small sequence of goals: get the character functioning, follow the current story, try one activity, then check the systems that track ongoing rewards. This avoids spending the first session on obsolete gear paths or trying to master every new feature at once.
- Start the Catch Up Experience if offered. Use it to refresh class controls, movement, and interrupts.
- Disable outdated addons and rebuild the basics. Check action bars and current talents before taking the character into group content.
- Use The War Within recap where needed, then continue Midnight quests. Aim for a coherent current route rather than completionism in old expansions.
- Review your gold and inventory. List genuinely surplus Auction House items, and reserve enough for repairs and consumables before pursuing ideal upgrades.
- Choose one progression lane. Try a Delve, outdoor or Prey content, a Normal or Heroic dungeon, or low-pressure PvP according to your preference.
- Open Journeys and the Great Vault at reset. Use the live interface to check what counts for the current week and season.
- Return to optional projects later. Housing, transmog, professions, and old campaigns are available after your character is comfortable in current play.
Season 2 gearing has its own limits. Aitude’s summary of Icy Veins’ Midnight Season 2 guidance says a full upgrade of one gear piece costs 100 crests, while the weekly cap is also 100—enough to finish one full piece per week under that upgrade path. Treat that as a Season 2-specific pacing note, not a universal rule for every item or future season; consult the live Journeys and upgrade interfaces for current requirements.
Do you need addons to return?
No. Midnight’s base interface includes damage meters, nameplates, boss alerts, and scaling, so addons are optional for casual play. A returning addon setup may be outdated or incompatible, so troubleshoot the interface before assuming the game or character is broken.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Disable outdated addons if bars or interface elements are missing, then re-enable current addons selectively.
- Update ElvUI, WeakAuras, and Details if you use them. PC Tech Magazine’s April 2026 guidance also recommends DBM or BigWigs before serious group content.
- Replace stale WeakAuras with current versions from their authors’ published distribution pages rather than reusing old strings blindly.
- Use Assisted Highlight or the Single-Button Assistant while rebuilding your routine; neither requires a full addon suite.
Blizzard’s return guidance specifically advises disabling outdated addons when troubleshooting missing bars. If the basic interface works with addons off, add them back one by one so you can identify which one needs an update.
What can you safely ignore for now?
Returning efficiently means leaving some old goals unfinished. Prioritize current access and your chosen activity; do not treat every old quest chain, currency, or gearing track as a prerequisite to Midnight.
