Black Widow: Recharged is a modern take on Atari’s arcade twin-stick shooter, built around short, high-pressure runs: aim, fend off encroaching bugs, and decide when to risk collecting cash for a powerful web blast. Its 30 challenges and local co-op add useful ways to revisit that loop, but critics have also found the package repetitive or limited in value. It is best suited to players who want focused score chasing, rather than a long campaign or extensive progression.
What is Black Widow: Recharged?
Developed by Adamvision Studios and SneakyBox Studios, Black Widow: Recharged updates Atari’s arachnid-themed arcade shooter with modern visuals and controls. Atari lists September 29, 2021 as the game’s release date; Steam lists October 28, 2021 for its PC storefront release, so those dates refer to different contexts. Atari’s game page describes the updated game and its features, while Steam’s listing gives its PC release details.
How the arcade loop works
Defend the web and manage risk
The core is a twin-stick shooter: move around the web and aim independently as bugs close in. Defeated enemies leave cash. Collecting it charges a large web blast, turning a dangerous detour across the playfield into a potential way to clear space. That risk-reward decision gives the score-chasing loop its main tactical wrinkle.
Power-ups and scoring
Atari lists a dozen power-ups, including explosive blasts, spread-shots, and a fear effect that traps enemies in webs. These temporary advantages change how a run unfolds, but the game remains centered on survival, enemy management, and improving a score rather than building a character over a long campaign.

Modes and multiplayer
Arcade and challenge play
Alongside arcade mode, the game includes 30 challenges and country and global leaderboards. Challenges offer specific goals beyond simply lasting longer or chasing a higher score, giving players a reason to return with a different target. The structure still favors compact attempts over a story campaign or broad progression system.
Local co-op
Atari says, “Every mode and level is playable in local co-op mode with a friend.” That means co-op is not confined to a separate mode; it can be used across the listed modes and levels. Nintendo’s US listing specifies one or two players on a single Switch system. The UK Nintendo listing advises that multiplayer requires one compatible controller per player and that additional controllers may be needed; check the listing for the edition and region you plan to use.

What critics say
Reviews point to a clear strength and a clear limitation: the action and challenge structure suit score-focused play, but the compact design can feel repetitive or slight if you want more variety.
- TouchArcade praised the power-ups, challenge mode, co-op, leaderboards, and fit of the twin-stick controls. Its Switch review score was 80 in 2021, as listed by Metacritic’s Switch critic reviews.
- Gamezebo found the intense short-session format appealing to some players, but said the game felt less welcoming than Centipede: Recharged and noted bugs and obstructive screen decoration. Metacritic lists its Switch score as 60 in 2021.
- Pure Nintendo criticized the game’s value and bugs; Metacritic lists its Switch score as 50 in 2021.
- Tech-Gaming awarded it 78% in 2021, calling it a respectable, succinct update while noting limited content. Its review highlighted score runs, standalone challenges, achievements, and leaderboards.
These are individual outlet opinions, not a guarantee of how the game will feel to every player. Steam’s user-review label is also a changing storefront snapshot, not a stable critical consensus.

Quick Recap
Who should play it?
- A good fit: players who enjoy arcade score chasing, escalating pressure, leaderboard competition, or short challenge attempts.
- More appealing with a friend: local co-op is available across modes and levels, with Nintendo listing two-player play on one Switch system.
- Consider another game: players looking for a substantial campaign, long-term progression, or lots of change between sessions may find this compact loop repetitive.
