Ratatan is a rhythm-led side-scrolling action game in which your timing controls a busy battlefield, while positioning, command choices and retreat decisions determine whether a run survives. Version 1.0 is announced for Nintendo Switch 2 on October 14, 2026 in Nintendo UK’s listing (October 15 in the wider global announcement). It supports online co-op for up to four players, but Nintendo lists one player on a single Switch 2 system.
What is Ratatan?
Ratatan combines rhythm-game inputs with side-scrolling combat and roguelike progression. Nintendo describes the formula as a rhythm roguelike action game: you tap sequences in time to order Cobuns, guide Ratatans, choose where commands land and decide when to withdraw. That makes the beat an active combat system rather than a musical layer placed over conventional attacks.

The setting is Rataport. Ratatans travel toward the Everafter to meet a goddess, providing an adventure framework without reducing the game to a heavily scripted story. The official Steam description also emphasizes lively 2D animation and battles involving more than 100 characters, an official product claim rather than an independently measured count.

Rhythm as your command interface
Players tap rhythm sequences to issue orders to Cobuns. Successful timing is therefore tied to what your group does on screen, not merely to a score multiplier. The basic appeal is easy to understand: hear or recognize the pattern, keep the beat and turn that input into coordinated action.

Positioning and command judgment
Timing alone does not settle an encounter. You also position Ratatans, select where to issue commands and judge whether continuing a fight is worth the risk. Those decisions give the side-scrolling action a tactical layer: a well-timed order can still be poorly placed, while a retreat can protect a run that would otherwise collapse.
Roguelike structure
Runs are built around changing progression rather than a single uninterrupted campaign. The Early Access version included multiple worlds (up to World 5), playable characters, weapons, skills, boss battles and progression systems. The developers announced that version 1.0 would add Episodes 3 and 4, the final world and boss, bring the Dark Ratatans together and include the promised orchestral recording. Is Ratatan a Patapon-style game?
Yes, in the sense that both games use rhythm to direct a colorful army and make musical timing central to combat. The comparison is a useful starting point, especially for players who remember issuing commands through beats. Ratatan is not presented as a formal sequel in the available official material, however. Its own identity comes from the roguelike run structure, side-scrolling battles, Ratatan and Cobun roles, retreat decisions, equipment and skills, and online co-op.

Switch 2 release, date and edition details
Ratatan’s announced version 1.0 launch covers Nintendo Switch 2, Steam, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The global announcement gives October 15, 2026, while Nintendo UK’s Switch 2 page lists October 14 locally. Treat that as a regional release-date difference rather than one universal local time.

Early Access began on Steam on September 18, 2025. The Switch 2 release is therefore arriving alongside the 1.0 launch rather than as an Early Access port. Nintendo’s US Digital Deluxe listing describes a digital package containing the full game plus Equipment & Accessories, Super Cobun and Supplies DLC sets; some included items can also be earned through progression.
What is known about a physical copy?
Game Source Entertainment previously announced simultaneous physical and digital editions for July 16, 2026. That schedule was superseded by the later October 1.0 announcement. Current official launch material reviewed for Switch 2 does not establish whether a physical edition remains planned for the revised date, so verify a regional retailer or publisher listing before buying a boxed copy. The Nintendo US listing reviewed is explicitly digital.

Co-op and platform considerations
Online co-op supports one to four players. On Switch 2, Nintendo lists one player on a single system, so the four-player figure refers to online participation rather than local same-console play. Nintendo also says online play requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership and internet access, and warns that online features are not available in every country.

On October 13, 2026, Steam displayed 90% positive from 928 English-language reviews and 80% positive from 15 recent reviews. These are changing user-review snapshots, not critic scores and not a performance benchmark for the Switch 2 version. They indicate a generally favorable response to the Steam release while leaving platform-specific questions—such as Switch 2 frame rate, controls, accessibility options and technical performance—unanswered without direct testing.
The project also reported 14,598 Kickstarter backers pledging ¥219,314,335, according to the campaign page last updated August 17, 2026. That is a crowdfunding result, not a sales total or player count.
Who should watch Ratatan on Switch 2?
- Rhythm-game players: the beat is tied directly to commands and battlefield outcomes.
- Strategy fans: positioning, command placement and retreat choices matter alongside timing.
- Roguelike players: repeated runs, progression, equipment, skills and bosses provide the long-term structure.
- Co-op groups: online teams of up to four are supported, subject to Nintendo Switch Online and regional availability.
- Patapon fans: the musical command concept should feel familiar, but Ratatan is a separate game with its own systems and story setting.

- Switch 2 frame-rate and resolution performance.
- How Switch 2 controls map rhythm input and positioning.
- Accessibility options and their scope.
- Cross-platform multiplayer.
- Whether a physical Switch 2 edition will ship on the revised October date.
- The final 1.0 contents compared with the developers’ announced Episodes 3 and 4, final world and boss, Dark Ratatan material and orchestral recording.
