Playing the Steam version of Rise of the Ronin on Windows? Update the game first. Team NINJA fixed a crash linked to certain Windows updates in Ver. 1.09.0.5, released November 11, 2025. Then verify the installation before changing drivers, security settings, or save files. These steps target launch crashes, infinite loading, gameplay crashes, controller-related crashes, and problems that began after a Windows update.

Before you start: identify the crash

The fastest fix depends on when the game fails:

  • Before the menu: check updates, requirements, drivers, overlays, permissions, and DirectX components.
  • Black screen or infinite loading: verify files, disable overlays, check drivers, and test security software.
  • After selecting one save: back up both save locations before attempting recovery.
  • During gameplay or in demanding areas: lower graphics settings, cap the frame rate, and check temperatures.
  • With a DualSense: test keyboard and mouse, then temporarily disable Steam Input or vibration.
  • After Windows Update: confirm that the game is running Ver. 1.09.0.5 or later before considering anything more drastic.

Do not confuse stuttering, slow motion, or rendering problems with a desktop crash. Team NINJA previously documented Ultra-preset rendering issues and a 120-FPS slow-motion problem; those symptoms need different settings changes.

Fix 1: Update the game and restart Steam

  1. Open Steam and select Library.
  2. Right-click Rise of the Ronin and choose Properties.
  3. Open Updates and ensure Steam is allowed to update the game.
  4. Restart Steam after the download finishes, then restart Windows.

The latest version listed on Team NINJA’s official update page during this research was Ver. 1.09.0.5, dated November 11, 2025. That update addressed crashes occurring after certain Windows updates when particular characters or equipment appeared on-screen. Check the official patch history for any later release before publishing or troubleshooting.

Earlier fixes included a launch crash on CPUs with 33 or more threads in Ver. 1.09.0.1, a DualSense vibration crash in Ver. 1.09.0.2, and additional loading, language-switching, and gameplay crashes in later patches. Do not use old CPU-affinity workarounds as a default fix on a current installation.

Fix 2: Check the PC requirements and SSD installation

Requirement Minimum Recommended
Operating system Windows 10/11 64-bit Windows 10/11 64-bit
CPU Intel Core i5-10400 or AMD Ryzen 5 1600 Intel Core i5-10600K or AMD Ryzen 5 5600X
RAM 16 GB 16 GB
GPU GTX 1060 6 GB or Radeon RX 5500 XT 8 GB RTX 2080 Super 8 GB or Radeon RX 6700 XT 12 GB
DirectX Version 12 Version 12
Storage 155 GB; SSD required 155 GB; NVMe SSD recommended
Official target 1080p/30 FPS, lowest upscaled settings 1080p/60 FPS, standard upscaled settings

These are the Steam-listed requirements. Check that the game is on an SSD, that the drive has space beyond the nominal 155 GB, and that a gaming laptop is using its dedicated GPU. Dual-channel memory and sufficient GPU VRAM can also matter. Falling below the recommended specifications does not automatically cause crashes, but it leaves less headroom for demanding settings and background software.

Fix 3: Verify the Steam game files

  1. Open Steam Library.
  2. Right-click Rise of the Ronin and select Properties.
  3. Choose Installed Files.
  4. Click Verify integrity of game files.
  5. Wait for the process to finish, restart Steam, and launch the game.

Steam may redownload missing or damaged files. Verification normally does not remove saves, but do not manually delete game or configuration folders without making a backup first. Koei Tecmo recommends this procedure for launch and slow-performance problems in its Steam troubleshooting guide.

Fix 4: Update or roll back the graphics driver

Install pending Windows updates, restart Windows, and install the latest stable driver for your NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel GPU. If the crashes began immediately after a driver update, test the previous stable driver instead of repeatedly installing random versions.

Avoid preview Windows Insider builds while diagnosing the problem. Koei Tecmo warns that driver and hardware changes are performed at the user’s own risk. Use the official driver package from your GPU manufacturer rather than third-party “driver updater” or PC-optimizer software.

To record your environment, run winver to see the Windows build and dxdiag to inspect DirectX, display hardware, and driver details.

Fix 5: Lower Ultra settings and cap the frame rate

For gameplay crashes, severe stutter, overheating, or major frame-time spikes, use this conservative baseline:

  • Change Ultra to High or Standard.
  • Set the frame-rate limit to 60 FPS, not 120 FPS.
  • Disable particularly demanding ray-tracing-type options if available.
  • Lower upscaling quality and ambient occlusion.
  • Use the Recommended preset if available.
  • Restart the game after applying the changes.

Team NINJA previously reported that Ultra could cause frame-rate drops and model-rendering problems regardless of specifications. It also recommended trying 60 FPS for an earlier 120-FPS slow-motion issue. These settings may improve stability; they are not universal crash cures.

Fix 6: Disable overlays, mods, and background utilities

Temporarily close or disable:

  • Steam Overlay
  • Discord Overlay
  • NVIDIA App or GeForce Experience overlay
  • AMD Adrenalin overlay
  • Xbox Game Bar
  • MSI Afterburner and RivaTuner Statistics Server
  • RGB, hardware-monitoring, and recording software
  • ReShade, mods, mod managers, and controller-remapping tools

This is an isolation test, not a permanent requirement. If the crash stops, re-enable programs one at a time until you find the conflict. Overlay behavior is relevant because Team NINJA’s patch notes specifically discuss pausing the game when the Steam Overlay opens; that does not prove that every overlay is incompatible.

Fix 7: Check security software, permissions, DirectX, and Media Player

Try these in order:

  • Temporarily add Ronin.exe and the game folder to your antivirus or security software exclusions.
  • Test Steam and the game with administrator privileges.
  • Ensure Windows Compatibility Mode is not enabled for the executable.
  • If the crash occurs during video playback or cutscenes, install the required Windows Media Player components through Windows Features.
  • If an error reports missing legacy DirectX files, install the directx_Jun2010_redist.exe package.
  • Close unnecessary background applications and check for overheating or throttling.

These are troubleshooting tests. Remove antivirus exclusions and avoid permanent administrator execution unless you understand the security consequences. See Koei Tecmo’s troubleshooting instructions and this general Steam-game troubleshooting guide.

Fix 8: Rebuild shader caches and test a clean configuration

Shader-cache deletion can help when a driver or game update leaves incompatible compiled shaders. It is a general PC-game troubleshooting step, not a Rise of the Ronin-specific guaranteed fix. The next launch may take longer and initial stutter may temporarily increase while shaders rebuild.

Use your GPU driver’s shader-cache controls or Windows’ temporary-file cleanup options, following the manufacturer’s instructions. Do not delete save files or the entire configuration directory. If you rename a configuration folder for testing, preserve the original so you can restore settings.

Crash-specific quick guide

Symptom Prioritize
Crashes before the menu Update, requirements, file verification, driver, overlays, compatibility mode, permissions, DirectX.
Started after Windows Update Install Ver. 1.09.0.5 or later; do not uninstall a Windows security update as a first step.
Crashes entering an area Update, verify files, lower Ultra settings, cap at 60 FPS, rebuild shaders.
Crashes with DualSense Test keyboard and mouse, disable Steam Input or vibration, and close remapping software.
Only crashes on Ultra or 120 FPS Use High/Standard and a 60-FPS cap.
Only one save crashes Back up both save locations, then investigate save recovery.

Protect your saves before advanced recovery

Back up the entire folders below before changing configuration or save files:

Users\<username>\Documents\KoeiTecmo\Ronin\Savedata\<Steam Account ID>

Users\<username>\AppData\Local\KoeiTecmo\Ronin\Savedata\<Steam Account ID>

The second location may contain BACKUP.BIN. Team NINJA’s recovery instructions describe renaming the desired backup to SAVEDATA.BIN and replacing the affected save in certain recovery situations. This is a last-resort save-recovery procedure, not a normal crash fix. Preserve the original files first and be cautious with Steam Cloud so a good local save is not overwritten.

Check the Windows crash record

If the error includes 0xC0000005 or no useful message appears, run eventvwr.msc. Open Windows Logs > Application and inspect the entry at the crash time. Note the faulting application and module, but do not assume the named module is automatically the root cause.

When to contact Koei Tecmo support

Escalate after updating, verifying files, testing conservative settings, and disabling overlays. Include:

  • Game version
  • Windows version and build from winver
  • GPU model and driver version
  • CPU, RAM, and whether the game is installed on an SSD
  • Crash time and exact symptom
  • Error code or Event Viewer faulting module
  • dxdiag report
  • Every troubleshooting step already attempted

Microsoft’s documentation for KB5065789 does not name Rise of the Ronin as a Windows-wide known issue. The game-side Windows-update fix comes from Team NINJA, so distinguish those two facts when reporting the problem.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I uninstall the Windows update that caused the crash?

Not as a first step. Update Rise of the Ronin to Ver. 1.09.0.5 or later first; Team NINJA addressed a crash associated with certain Windows updates in that game patch.

Will verifying Steam files delete my save?

File verification normally does not remove saves. Still, back up both save locations before manually changing files or attempting save recovery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is an HDD guaranteed to cause crashes?

No. Steam requires an SSD and warns that poor storage performance can affect gameplay, but an HDD does not automatically explain every crash.

Do I need to use a CPU-affinity workaround?

Usually not on a current installation. The known launch crash affecting CPUs with 33 or more threads was fixed in Ver. 1.09.0.1.

The Bottom Line

Start with the current game patch, then verify Steam files. Next test drivers, conservative graphics settings, overlays, security software, and shader caches in that order. If only one save fails, protect the save folders before attempting recovery. If a fully updated, verified installation still crashes, collect diagnostics and contact Koei Tecmo rather than deleting system files or repeatedly changing hardware settings.
