RLCraft LAN usually fails for one of four reasons: the players are not running the identical pack, the computers are not on the same reachable home network, Java is blocked by the host firewall, or the host never opened the world correctly. Put every computer on the same normal home network, match Minecraft 1.12.2, Forge 14.23.5.2860, the RLCraft release, mods, and configuration, then have the host choose Open to LAN. Guests should look under Multiplayer; if discovery fails, use Direct Connection with the host’s local IPv4 address and the port printed in chat.
LAN is a temporary session, not a persistent server. The host must remain in the world and awake. If you need the world available when that player is offline, use a dedicated server or managed hosting instead.

What should I check first when RLCraft LAN is not working?
Start with the modpack profile, before changing router settings. RLCraft multiplayer is much less forgiving of version differences than vanilla Minecraft: one changed mod, configuration file, Forge build, or pack release can produce an incompatible-client message or prevent a connection entirely.
- Verify the launcher profile. Every player should start the same RLCraft/Forge profile, not vanilla Minecraft 1.12.2 or a different Forge instance.
- Match the release. RLCraft 2.9.x is built for Minecraft 1.12.2. The RLCraft project identifies Forge 1.12.2-14.23.5.2860 as its packaged baseline. Do not let one player update to a newer profile while another remains on an older release.
- Compare the complete pack. The
modsandconfigfolders should match. If anyone added, removed, or manually updated a mod, restore the untouched pack before troubleshooting networking. - Check memory allocation. The project’s current Technic guidance lists 3–4 GB of client RAM. Leave enough memory for the operating system; allocating more is not automatically better and can increase garbage-collection pauses.
- Only then test the LAN. Networking fixes cannot repair a mismatched client.
For a dedicated server, use the server pack that exactly matches the clients. A client that launches successfully can still be incompatible with a server built from another RLCraft release.

Are both computers really on the same network?
LAN discovery requires a reachable local path, not merely internet access. Guest Wi-Fi, mobile tethering, VPN interfaces, and wireless client isolation can let two devices browse the internet while preventing them from seeing each other.
Use a normal private home network
Connect both computers to the same ordinary router network. Avoid the router’s guest SSID and phone hotspots while diagnosing the problem. If possible, connect one or both computers by Ethernet to the same router as a temporary test. A wired connection can reveal whether guest Wi-Fi or wireless isolation is the issue, but it will not fix a bad modpack or firewall rule.
Disconnect competing network paths
Temporarily disconnect VPNs and virtual network adapters. Minecraft may advertise the world through the wrong interface when several adapters are active. Reconnect the VPN after the test if you need it for another purpose.
Check the host’s local address
On the host computer, identify the IPv4 address assigned by the home router, commonly in a private range such as 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x. Do not give that private address to a friend who is outside your home network; it is usable only from the same reachable LAN.
How do I open an RLCraft world to LAN correctly?
The host must perform the LAN action after entering the world. Opening the launcher or sitting at the title screen does not publish a world.

- Start the matching RLCraft profile and load the world.
- Press Esc to open the pause menu.
- Select Open to LAN.
- Choose the desired game mode and whether cheats are allowed, then select Start LAN World.
- Read the chat message that reports the LAN port and record that number. The port can change each time the world is opened.
- Have the other player open Multiplayer and wait for the LAN world to appear.
The host must stay in the world for the session to remain available. Closing the world, closing the game, putting the computer to sleep, or moving the computer to another network ends access.
What if the RLCraft LAN world does not appear in Multiplayer?
Use Direct Connection instead of relying on automatic discovery. Discovery traffic is often blocked even when a direct local connection would work.

- On the guest computer, open Multiplayer.
- Select Direct Connection.
- Enter the host’s local IPv4 address, followed by a colon and the port shown in the host’s chat message, for example
192.168.1.25:54321. Use the actual address and port from your network. - Select Join Server.
If Direct Connection succeeds, the problem is LAN discovery rather than the world itself. You can continue using the address and port for that session, but remember that the port may change the next time the host opens the world.
If Direct Connection fails on a genuinely shared network, re-check the host address, the port, the host’s active network interface, and the firewall. An address copied from a VPN adapter or an old network connection will not work.

The host firewall must permit the Java or Minecraft process on the private network profile. Keep the firewall enabled and correct the rule instead of treating a permanent firewall shutdown as the solution.
Allow Java on the private network
- When the operating system asks whether Java or Minecraft may communicate on a network, allow it on Private networks.
- If the prompt was dismissed, open the operating system’s firewall settings and review the list of allowed applications.
- Enable the Java/Minecraft entry for the private network profile. Do not expose it broadly on public networks unless you understand the security consequences.
- Restart the host’s LAN world after changing the rule, then record the newly displayed port.
Firewall changes affect reachability, not pack compatibility. A guest who receives an incompatible-mods message still needs a matching RLCraft installation.
Use a controlled test
With both computers on the same private network, test Direct Connection while the host is in the world. If it works only after the private firewall rule is enabled, the rule was the blocker. If it still fails, verify that the host did not switch from Wi-Fi to Ethernet or another network after opening the world.
What does each RLCraft multiplayer error mean?
The wording of the failure usually points to the layer that needs attention. Fix one layer at a time rather than changing mods, Java, and router settings simultaneously.

- The host did not choose Open to LAN.
- The computers are on different networks, a guest SSID, or an isolated wireless segment.
- A VPN or virtual adapter is advertising the wrong interface.
- The private firewall rule blocks Java discovery traffic.
Use Direct Connection with the host’s local address and current LAN port to separate discovery from connectivity.

Direct Connection reports incompatible or missing mods
Compare the RLCraft release, Minecraft 1.12.2, Forge build, complete mods folder, and config folder. Do not install a random newer mod or Forge build as a “fix”; restore the pack version used by the host or server.
The connection times out to an internet server
Wait until the server console has completed startup, confirm the address and port, and check the server firewall. For a home-hosted internet server, verify router port forwarding and test from a network outside the house. A private address such as 192.168.1.25 is not an internet address.
The game disconnects during exploration
Do not assume that adding RAM will solve every spike. Inspect CPU use, memory pressure, disk activity, and server logs. Pre-generate the planned region, reduce view-distance settings carefully, and check whether the machine is generating many new chunks at once.
Structures or villagers are missing on a dedicated server
Stop the server and open server.properties. Set enable-command-block=true before generating additional terrain, then restart the server. The RLCraft project warns that leaving this setting disabled can prevent certain structures from generating correctly and leave them without villagers.
How do I set up a persistent RLCraft dedicated server?
A dedicated server separates world availability from one player’s game session. It requires more administration than LAN, but players can join whenever the server machine and process are running.
- Create a clean server folder. Download the server pack that matches the exact client release. Do not mix files from another RLCraft version.
- Use the documented Java version. The documented RLCraft 2.9.3 setup uses Java 8. Check the requirements for the exact pack you installed rather than substituting a newer Java release.
- Run the server once. This generates the initial files, including
eula.txt. - Accept the EULA. Open
eula.txt, change the acceptance entry as required by Mojang’s terms, save it, and start the server again. - Set command blocks before new generation. Stop the server cleanly and set
enable-command-block=trueinserver.properties. - Wait for full startup. Invite players only after the console reports that loading has completed. Joining while the world is still starting can look like a timeout or failed connection.
- Secure the local network path. Give the server machine a stable local address, allow Java through the private firewall, and keep the server port consistent.
- Configure internet access only if needed. Forward the configured TCP port from the router to the server’s stable local address, then give remote players the public address and port. Never provide the private LAN address to someone outside the home network.
- Test from outside the home network. A connection that works from inside the house does not prove that router forwarding works. Test using a separate mobile or other external connection.
- Back up and restrict access. Back up the world and configuration while the server is stopped or through a safe backup process, and use a whitelist for a private group.
Some internet providers use carrier-grade NAT, which prevents ordinary inbound port forwarding from working even when the router is configured correctly. If an outside-network test fails under carrier-grade NAT, use a relay service or managed host rather than repeatedly changing local firewall rules.
Which multiplayer option is best for an RLCraft group?
The right choice depends on whether everyone is in one home, whether the world must remain online, and how much networking administration the group can handle. RLCraft’s Forge and server-pack requirements are the compatibility gate for every option.

A CurseForge comparison published May 13, 2026 listed Java Realms at $7.99 per month at that time. Treat that as a dated comparison figure and verify current pricing before subscribing. The same comparison describes LAN as free but not always online, local dedicated servers as free when the PC remains on, and hosting services as provider-dependent.
There is no authoritative universal RLCraft player-count limit. Practical capacity depends on the server CPU, available memory, storage speed, view distance, loaded chunks, world generation, and how active the players are. Choose a host or machine based on the exact pack and workload rather than a generic Minecraft player-count claim.

Once players can join, performance problems usually come from chunk generation, overloaded hardware, or an unstable network rather than LAN discovery.

Reduce new chunk-generation pressure
Pre-generate the region the group expects to explore. This moves expensive world-generation work away from peak play and can reduce pauses when several players travel in different directions.
Adjust view distance conservatively
Lower view distance in small steps and observe CPU, memory, and disk behavior. A lower setting can help an overloaded server, but it cannot repair a mismatched pack or a saturated network.
Watch the machine, not just the game window
- High CPU use suggests world generation, entity processing, or too many simultaneous tasks.
- Memory pressure can cause pauses; allocating the project’s recommended 3–4 GB to a client does not mean the whole computer has only that amount available.
- Slow or nearly full storage can delay chunk loading and saves.
- Server logs can identify repeated errors that are invisible in the client menu.
Separate network symptoms from server symptoms
A timeout before the server accepts a connection points to address, port, firewall, router, or startup state. A disconnect after joining, especially during exploration, warrants checking server logs and resource use as well as the network.
When should I stop troubleshooting LAN and move the world?
Move to a dedicated server when the group needs the world available while the original host is offline, when players live in different homes, or when the host computer cannot remain awake. A dedicated server also makes scheduled backups and access control easier.

Choose a managed host when the group does not want to configure port forwarding, maintain Java, or keep a home computer running. Before paying, confirm the provider supports the exact RLCraft release, Forge build, server pack, memory requirement, backup process, and migration method. A generic Minecraft plan is not automatically compatible with a heavily modded 1.12.2 pack.
Stay with LAN when everyone shares a reliable private network and the host is comfortable keeping the world open. It is the simplest and cheapest option, but its availability ends with the host session.

Can I play RLCraft with a friend in another house using Open to LAN?
Not directly through a normal private LAN address. Players in different homes need an internet-accessible dedicated server, a compatible relay, or a carefully configured public connection; carrier-grade NAT can prevent ordinary router forwarding even when local settings are correct.
How can I check which Java version the server is using?
Run java -version in the same environment that starts the server and compare the result with the requirements for your exact RLCraft server pack. The documented 2.9.3 setup uses Java 8, so a different major version should be treated as a compatibility question rather than an automatic upgrade.

Can another player keep the RLCraft world online if the original host leaves?
Not with ordinary Open to LAN. The save must be moved to a dedicated server or compatible hosted service, and the world should be backed up before migration so the new instance starts from a known copy.
Why do villagers fail to appear in newly generated RLCraft structures?
On a dedicated server, stop the process and verify enable-command-block=true in server.properties before generating more terrain. Existing terrain may not be repaired automatically, so make a backup and follow the pack’s documented recovery guidance before regenerating areas.
