Roblox Error Code 279, also shown as ID=17, means the Roblox app could not establish a connection to an experience’s game server. It is usually a network, firewall, app, browser, or experience-specific problem—not proof that your account is banned or that Roblox is permanently broken.
The fastest diagnosis is to try another experience and then try Roblox on another network, such as a phone hotspot. Those two tests reveal whether the problem is limited to one experience, one device, or your network.
What does Roblox Error Code 279 mean?
The error may appear as “Failed to connect to the Game,” “ID=17: Connection attempt failed,” or similar wording. Error 279 is the displayed code, while ID=17 is the associated connection-failure identifier.
It generally occurs before you successfully join the game server. Roblox says the problem can involve firewalls, inconsistent or slow connections, browser security settings, extensions, blocked UDP traffic, or a defective experience. See Roblox’s Error 279 guidance and its general connection troubleshooting.

Error 279 is different from:
- Error 277: the connection was lost after joining a server.
- Error 280: Roblox may need an update.
- Errors 267 and 600: commonly associated with experience bans.
- Error 524: a permission or server-access problem.
Roblox lists these codes separately in its support documentation.
First, find out where the problem is
Do not begin by repeatedly reinstalling Roblox. Establish the scope of the failure first:
| Test result | Most likely explanation |
|---|---|
| Only one experience fails | The experience may be offline, overloaded, misconfigured, or broken. |
| Every experience fails on one device | Suspect Roblox, the browser, permissions, firewall, antivirus, or device settings. |
| Every device fails on one Wi-Fi network | Suspect the router, ISP, DNS, parental controls, or network filtering. |
| Roblox works on another network | The original network is blocking or disrupting Roblox traffic. |
| Many players report the same issue at once | A Roblox-side incident or client regression is possible. |
- Try two or three other Roblox experiences.
- Try another device if one is available.
- Switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data or a phone hotspot.
- Ask another player whether they can join the same experience.
- Check Roblox’s official status channels before making advanced changes. Do not assume Roblox is down without current evidence.
Quick fixes for Error 279
- Close Roblox completely. Reopen the app and try again.
- Restart the device. This clears temporary app and network states.
- Restart the router or modem. Wait for the connection to return fully.
- Try another experience. This separates a game-specific failure from a Roblox-wide problem on your device.
- Try another network. A hotspot is a useful diagnostic; if it works, focus on the original network rather than reinstalling again.
- Update Roblox and your operating system. Also install browser updates if you launch Roblox from a browser.
- Temporarily disable VPNs, proxies, ad blockers, or browser extensions that could interfere with launching or loading. Re-enable them one at a time after testing.
- Reinstall Roblox from the official Roblox website, Microsoft Store, App Store, Google Play, Amazon Appstore, or Chromebook-compatible store.
- Check firewall and antivirus permissions. Add Roblox to the allowed-app list instead of leaving protection disabled.
Roblox recommends trying troubleshooting steps one at a time, including changing the internet source, reinstalling the app, force-closing it, checking permissions, and correcting device date and time.
Fix Error 279 on Windows PC
Reinstall Roblox
- Open the taskbar search field and search for Control Panel.
- Select Programs, then Programs and Features.
- Right-click Roblox and choose Uninstall or Uninstall/Change.
- Restart Windows.
- Install Roblox again from the official Roblox website or Microsoft Store.
Clear Roblox’s local data if reinstalling does not help

- Uninstall Roblox.
- Press Win + R, type
CMD, and press Enter. - Enter
cd AppDataLocal. - Then enter
rmdir /s Robloxand typeywhen prompted. - Restart the computer and reinstall Roblox.
This targets the Roblox folder under your user’s local AppData directory. Do not delete unrelated folders. If the command does not work, stop at ordinary reinstalling or use File Explorer to remove only the Roblox folder.
Check Windows security software
Open Windows Firewall or your security product’s application permissions and allow Roblox to communicate with the internet. Also inspect web protection, ransomware protection, parental controls, and application-control features.
If temporarily turning protection off changes the result, turn it back on and create a narrowly scoped Roblox exception. Roblox says antivirus and internet-security software can prevent Roblox or Roblox Studio from communicating; it does not recommend leaving protection disabled. See its firewall and router guidance.
Check the launch browser
Update the browser, try another supported browser, and temporarily disable extensions—especially ad blockers. Launch from the official Roblox experience page rather than a third-party link.

Fix Error 279 on Mac
- Quit Roblox and remove it by dragging the app to Trash or choosing Move to Trash.
- Reinstall it from the official Roblox website.
- Open System Settings or System Preferences, depending on your macOS version.
- Check Privacy & Security and approve any required Roblox permission.
- Temporarily check VPNs, content filters, antivirus tools, and firewall settings.
- Test another Wi-Fi network or a phone hotspot.
Roblox’s support page uses legacy macOS labels and menu names, so the exact path may differ on your release. Use the equivalent current privacy, security, and firewall controls rather than treating an older menu label as a compatibility requirement.
Fix Error 279 on iPhone or iPad
- Restart the device.
- Force-close Roblox, reopen it, and try again.
- Delete Roblox and reinstall it from the App Store.
- Open Settings > General > Date & Time and ensure the time is correct, preferably with Set Automatically enabled.
- Try another Wi-Fi network or mobile connection.
Fix Error 279 on Android
- Restart the device.
- Open Settings > Apps > Roblox, choose Force stop, and reopen the app.
- Reinstall Roblox from Google Play.
- Check that the device’s date and time are accurate.
- Try another network.
Roblox’s cited support page mentions Android OS 6 and newer, but that legacy detail should not be treated as the complete current compatibility policy. Check the current store listing and Roblox requirements for your device.
Fix Error 279 on Amazon Fire tablets
- Open Settings > Apps & Games > Manage All Applications.
- Select Roblox and choose Force stop.
- Restart the tablet.
- Reinstall Roblox from the Amazon Appstore.
- Check date and time, then test another network.
Roblox’s support documentation lists examples including Fire 7 (9th generation and newer), Fire HD 8 (8th generation and newer), Fire HD 10 (9th generation and newer), and Fire Max 11 (13th generation and newer). These are examples from that documentation, not an exhaustive or necessarily current compatibility list.
Fix Error 279 on Chromebook or ChromeOS
- Update ChromeOS.
- Force-close Roblox or its active process.
- Restart the Chromebook.
- Remove and reinstall Roblox through Google Play, where supported.
- Check the date and time.
- Test another network.
Roblox’s support page mentions ChromeOS version 53 and newer, but that is a legacy troubleshooting label rather than a complete current compatibility statement.

Firewall, router, and managed-network problems
Roblox says firewall interference is a frequent cause of connection trouble. Check the firewall or antivirus allow list for Roblox, and inspect parental-control, web-filtering, and application-control settings. Re-enable security protection after any test.
Roblox’s connection documentation currently lists UDP ports 49152–65535 and says that blocking UDP packets on any port can cause problems. This does not mean you should forward the entire range, enable DMZ, or open broad inbound access. Normal home connections generally need troubleshooting of blocked outgoing traffic, filtering, or router firmware—not unnecessary port forwarding.
School, work, library, hotel, and managed parental-control networks may restrict Roblox domains, game traffic, UDP, or application launching. If you do not administer the network, contact its administrator rather than trying to bypass the restrictions.
Should you change DNS?
Changing DNS is often suggested online, but Roblox’s official Error 279 guidance does not identify Google or Cloudflare DNS as a standard fix. DNS helps a device find services by name; it cannot resolve a blocked firewall rule, restricted UDP traffic, missing app permission, or broken experience.

Use a DNS change only as an optional diagnostic when there is evidence of a name-resolution problem. It is not a guaranteed solution and should not be the first step.
What if only one Roblox experience fails?
If other experiences work, the problem is probably not your installation. The experience may be offline, overloaded, have an unavailable server instance, or contain scripts or assets that prevent it from loading.
- Try several other experiences.
- Rejoin the affected experience later.
- Ask another player to test it.
- Report the issue to the experience creator if other Roblox experiences work.
Roblox says an experience can be defective because of scripts or excessive objects and that the creator is the party able to repair it.
When none of these fixes work
Contact Roblox Support after testing at least one other experience and one other network. Include:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Your Roblox username.
- The exact error wording and code.
- Your device model and operating-system version.
- Your Roblox version, if visible.
- The affected experience names and whether all experiences fail.
- Which networks you tested and what happened.
- Whether another device or player could join.
- Recent changes, such as a system update, new antivirus, router change, VPN, or parental-control setting.
- Clear steps that reproduce the error.
Avoid unofficial launchers, “repair tools,” registry cleaners, random executable downloads, and paid gaming-DNS or booster services. They are not required for Roblox’s official troubleshooting path and can introduce security or account risk.
