The figure is a reported company statement—not an independently audited total or an itemized breakdown.
What Rockstar said the hack cost
GamesRadar+ reported in December 2023 that Rockstar told a UK court recovery from the incident cost $5 million and required “thousands of hours of staff time.” The available report does not identify a named speaker or break down the figure into specific expenses.
That makes “Rockstar told the court recovery cost $5 million” the most precise description. The report does not establish whether the amount includes indirect or long-term losses, or whether it was independently audited. It also does not support claims that the figure represents lost sales, ransom, legal fees, or any other particular category of expense. GamesRadar+’s December 2023 report
What happened in the 2022 intrusion
On September 19, 2022, Rockstar confirmed that an unauthorized third party had accessed its systems and downloaded confidential information, including early development footage for the next Grand Theft Auto. The company said at the time that it did not anticipate disruption to live game services or a long-term effect on ongoing projects, and that work on the next Grand Theft Auto would continue as planned.

Rockstar’s confirmation established that confidential information was accessed, but the contemporary reporting said the full extent of the information obtained was unclear. The public statement about expected disruption was a company assessment made at the time; it was not an independent evaluation of the later recovery expense. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the $5 million figure does—and does not—tell us
- It is a reported recovery cost: Rockstar reportedly gave the figure in a statement to a UK court in 2023.
- It includes a separate staff-time claim: the report also says recovery took thousands of hours of staff time.
- It is not a published cost breakdown: the cited coverage does not specify what expenses were included or how the total was calculated.
- It does not settle the full impact: the available reporting does not establish indirect or long-term losses, a complete inventory of data obtained, or how the attacker first gained access.
Rockstar’s public HackerOne program is a separate matter: it invites reports of potential non-game-related security vulnerabilities and excludes game bugs, glitches, and exploits. It does not provide further detail about the 2022 incident or its reported cost. Rockstar Games Public HackerOne Bug Bounty Program
