To get Roe in Stardew Valley, raise fish in a Fish Pond; most pond fish can produce it. With the Jewels of the Sea book power, Fishing Treasure Chests can also contain Roe. Put Roe in a Preserves Jar to make fish-specific Aged Roe—or Caviar if the Roe came from a Sturgeon.
How do you get Roe in Stardew Valley?
Raise fish in a Fish Pond
Fish Ponds are the ordinary source of Roe. Most fish kept in a pond can produce Roe, though what a pond produces depends on the species and its population. Ponds may also produce other items specific to the fish. The two Squid varieties produce Squid Ink instead of Roe; Sea Urchins can produce Roe, but Coral does not. Find it in Fishing Treasure Chests
After you obtain the Jewels of the Sea book power, Fishing Treasure Chests have a 25% chance to contain Roe, according to the Stardew Valley Wiki (accessed 2026). Sea Urchin Roe is excluded from this chest pool, so this route does not provide every kind of Roe.

Roe’s base selling price depends on the source fish: it is 30g plus half that fish’s base sale price, rounded down. As a result, different fish produce Roe with different base values. Roe has the same listed energy and health values regardless of type.

Roe is not in a sale category that benefits from a Profession. It cannot be sold at Pierre’s General Store; sell it at the Fish Shop or place it in the Shipping Bin. The in-game description reads: “Fresh fish eggs. These can be aged in a preserves jar to bring out more flavor.”
How do you make Aged Roe or Caviar?
- Collect Roe from a Fish Pond or an eligible Fishing Treasure Chest.
- Place the Roe in a Preserves Jar.
- Collect the processed product: ordinary Roe becomes Aged Roe named for its source fish, while Sturgeon Roe becomes Caviar.
Aged Roe sells for twice the base value of its unprocessed Roe, and its listed processing time is 4,000 in-game minutes (about two to three days) in the Roe table. The separate Aged Roe entry describes the processing time as three to four days. Because the published entries differ, treat the exact duration as approximate. Aged Roe’s listed Artisan Profession modifier is +40%.

Caviar has a fixed base price of 500g in the Roe item table and takes about 6,000 in-game minutes—approximately four days—to process. It is the Sturgeon-specific result, not the outcome for all Roe. See Aged Roe and Roe for the item entries.

Why can Fish Pond output vary?
A pond’s output is affected by both the fish species and its population. For ponds other than Legendary Fish and Legendary Fish II ponds, the Fish Pond entry gives a base chance of 23% to 95% for an item, depending on population. Roe output may also be affected by a random extra-quantity mechanism. These figures are not one universal chance that applies to every pond or every species; consult the Fish Pond entry for the relevant fish and population.
Golden Animal Crackers double Fish Pond output, according to the same entry. Pond mechanics for legendary fish have also changed within the 1.6 series, so version context matters: the official 1.6.9 changelog says legendary fish are limited to one per pond and produce legendary fish roe, while the Fish Pond history records a 1.6.15 increase to Roe production for Legendary Fish and Legendary Fish II. Availability can depend on platform release parity; these version notes should not be read as confirmation that every platform has the same update.

Roe was introduced in version 1.4. The 1.6-series history adds the Jewels of the Sea treasure-chest route and Roe for Squid, Midnight Squid, Legendary Fish, and Legendary Fish II. Squid and Midnight Squid are exceptions to ordinary pond Roe production: their ponds produce Squid Ink instead. The 1.6.9 changelog and later Fish Pond history describe subsequent legendary-fish pond behavior, including the 1.6.15 production-rate change.
