What are the ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X?
They are ASUS-manufactured ROG handheld gaming PCs developed in collaboration with Xbox. They run Windows 11, rather than using the same operating system as an Xbox Series X|S console, but add an Xbox-focused software experience, dedicated controls and access to Microsoft gaming services.
The standard ROG Xbox Ally is the lower-cost entry point. It is aimed at buyers who want Xbox-oriented navigation, native PC gaming and access to multiple PC storefronts without paying for the premium model.
The ROG Xbox Ally X is the enthusiast option. Xbox and ASUS positioned it for users who want more performance headroom for demanding native PC games. The initial pre-order announcement does not, by itself, establish a complete universal specification comparison for every region, so processor, memory, storage, battery, display and thermal claims should be checked against the relevant local product page.

What does the Xbox handheld experience include?
The announced software features included:
- A dedicated Xbox full-screen experience built on Windows 11
- A dedicated Xbox button
- An enhanced Game Bar overlay
- An aggregated library covering Xbox, Game Pass where available, Battle.net and other PC storefronts
- Xbox controller-inspired grips
- Native play for installed PC games
- Xbox Remote Play
- Xbox Cloud Gaming where available
- A Handheld Compatibility Program identifying games as Handheld Optimized or Mostly Compatible
- Xbox Play Anywhere support for supported titles
These features do not turn the devices into conventional Xbox consoles. Native PC gaming means a game is installed and runs on the handheld. Remote Play streams games from the owner’s Xbox console. Cloud Gaming streams supported games from Microsoft’s servers. Xbox Play Anywhere applies to supported titles purchased once for use across Xbox, PC and supported handheld experiences.
Windows compatibility also does not guarantee a console-like experience. Controller support, small-screen text, launchers, anti-cheat systems, online requirements, graphics settings and performance at the handheld’s power limits can all affect individual games. The compatibility program is a useful guide, but it is not a promise of identical Xbox-console performance.
Game Pass availability
In select markets, the announcement said buyers would receive three months of Xbox Game Pass, subject to terms and conditions. It was not a universal worldwide offer. Plans, pricing, benefits and cloud availability vary by market and can change, so buyers should check the local Xbox Game Pass page and the retailer’s current bundle terms.
Ally vs. Ally X: which model made more sense?
Choose the standard ROG Xbox Ally if:
- You want the Xbox software experience at the lowest entry price.
- You mainly play lighter or moderately demanding PC games.
- You already own PC games and want a portable Windows device.
- You plan to use Remote Play or cloud gaming regularly.
- You would rather spend the $400 difference on storage or other accessories.
Its main drawback is value competition. At a historical U.S. ERP of $599.99, it competed with cheaper handheld PCs and discounted previous-generation devices. Battery life, thermals, display characteristics, storage and regional specifications still needed to be checked before purchase.
Choose the ROG Xbox Ally X if:
- You prioritize higher native PC gaming performance.
- You play demanding modern games and want more hardware headroom.
- You are willing to pay a substantial premium to avoid compromising as often on settings.
- You expect to keep the handheld for several years and value enthusiast-class hardware.
The $999.99 ERP made the Ally X difficult to justify for buyers who mostly stream games, play lightweight titles or already own a capable handheld. The premium was aimed at users who would actually benefit from higher performance, not simply anyone who wanted Xbox branding.

The handheld price may not be the complete budget. The announcement also identified separately sold accessories including:
- A SanDisk microSD card with capacities up to 2TB and a claimed read speed of up to 200MB/s
- Seagate FireCuda 530R SSDs in 1TB, 2TB and 4TB capacities, with Microsoft DirectStorage support
- An ROG Xbox Ally Premium Carrying Case
- A 65W charger referenced in connection with the case
A microSD card is the simpler way to expand storage, although buyers should consider whether their games’ loading requirements make an internal SSD preferable. An SSD upgrade can cost more and may require opening or servicing the device; compatibility, installation difficulty and warranty implications should be confirmed for the exact model.

The carrying case was described as having a water-repellent exterior, fleece lining and a detachable pouch for a 65W charger. It may be worthwhile for frequent travelers, but fit and charger storage should be checked against the specific Ally or Ally X configuration.

What changed after the pre-order announcement?
The original 38-market figure described the September 2025 pre-order and launch plan. On October 16, 2025, Xbox announced that both handhelds were available and said they had launched worldwide across 45 countries, with additional markets planned. Therefore, “pre-orders are live in 38 countries” should not be presented as the current status in 2026. See the launch update from Xbox.
Bottom line: standard Ally or Ally X?
The standard ROG Xbox Ally was the sensible choice for price-conscious buyers who wanted Xbox integration and Windows PC gaming at the lowest cost. The Ally X was the more defensible purchase for enthusiasts who specifically valued higher native gaming performance enough to pay $400 more.
Neither model was automatically the better handheld for everyone. Buyers focused mainly on cloud gaming or Remote Play could potentially meet their needs with a lower-cost Windows handheld, a smartphone or tablet with a controller, or an existing Xbox. Buyers with a Steam-first library might also compare the Steam Deck, while those prioritizing a large display or alternative controls could consider Lenovo’s Legion Go line.
For current purchasing decisions, use regional Xbox and ASUS listings rather than relying on the historical U.S. ERPs, and verify the exact configuration, bundle, warranty and delivery terms before ordering.
