To play your first game on the 2026 ROG Xbox Ally X20 (model RC74XA), connect power, finish Windows 11 with the Microsoft account that owns your Xbox games or subscription, install Windows, ASUS and Xbox updates, then choose a title from Xbox, Game Pass or a signed-in PC game store. The X20 boots into a controller-friendly Xbox interface layered over Windows; it is not a separate Xbox console. You do not need a microSD card, dock or case for the first game, and the X20’s microSD Express slot has different performance behavior from earlier ROG Ally models.
What should I check before turning on the ROG Xbox Ally X20?
Confirm that the box and device are the 2026 X20 rather than the 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X. ASUS identifies the X20 as model RC74XA. Its US specification lists Windows 11 Home, a 1TB internal SSD, a 7.4-inch 120Hz OLED display, two USB-C ports that support power and display functions, and a specified 68W USB-C adapter. - Have a reliable Wi-Fi connection available for Windows setup, account verification, updates and game downloads.
- Keep the Microsoft account details for the Xbox purchases or Game Pass subscription you intend to use. If your first game is from another PC storefront, keep that storefront’s sign-in ready too.

ASUS’s October 2026 announcement describes a 20% airflow improvement and an 11% increase in heatsink-fin surface area. How do I complete the first Windows boot?
Connect power, press the power button and follow the Windows 11 prompts. The exact screens can change with Windows and X20 firmware, but the required decisions are the same: region, keyboard, network and user account.

- Connect the charger and Wi-Fi. Let Windows establish a network connection so it can validate the account and retrieve updates.
- Choose your region and keyboard. Add another keyboard layout only if you actually need it; extra layouts can make later text entry harder to follow.
- Sign in with the account that holds your games. For Xbox purchases and Game Pass, use the relevant Microsoft account. Signing into a different account can leave your library apparently empty even though the hardware is working.
- Create Windows security access. Windows may request a PIN. Xbox’s first-owner guidance also recommends the optional fingerprint setup, which is useful when waking the handheld or authorizing downloads.
- Allow Windows to finish its first-run work. Keep the X20 connected to power and do not force a shutdown while Windows is applying configuration.
ASUS says the X20 starts in Xbox mode after setup. Xbox mode is a full-screen Windows gaming interface designed for controller navigation. Windows remains underneath it, so desktop applications, settings and third-party launchers are still available when you leave the full-screen view.
What is Xbox mode, and how do I reach the Windows desktop?
Xbox mode organizes games and apps for handheld use; it does not turn the X20 into a console with a separate console operating system or a console-only game catalog.

Microsoft’s Xbox-mode documentation also describes a long press or an upward swipe opening Task View, where the desktop can be selected.
- Command Center button: a single press opens the device-control panel; a long press opens Armoury Crate SE.
- Desktop access: use Task View or the Windows desktop option when you need File Explorer, a browser or a PC storefront that is not already listed.
Microsoft’s current explanation of the full-screen gaming setting says: “When this setting is on, Windows limits background processes to improve performance while gaming.” The statement applies to entering Xbox mode on startup, not to every Windows session or every application. Interface labels under Settings > Gaming > Xbox mode can change as software updates arrive, so follow the current labels on the X20 rather than an old screenshot. Which updates should I install before launching a game?
Install Windows, ASUS and Xbox software updates separately. A game may run with only one layer updated, but troubleshooting is much clearer when all three are current and the requested restarts have been completed.
Install Windows updates
- Press the Xbox button to open Game Bar.
- Open the Settings widget.
- Select More Settings, then Open Windows Settings.
- Choose Windows Update, select Check for updates, install what Windows offers and restart when prompted.
Install ASUS device updates
- Open Command Center with the Command Center button.
- Select Open Armoury Crate SE.
- Open Update Center, choose Check for Updates and select Update All.
- Restart if Armoury Crate or Windows requests it, then return to Update Center once more to make sure no second-stage update is waiting.
Update Xbox components
Xbox’s getting-started guidance calls for current versions of the Xbox PC app and Game Bar in addition to Windows and ASUS updates. Use Windows Update and Armoury Crate’s own Update Center rather than third-party driver downloaders. If an update appears stalled, leave the X20 on power, confirm Wi-Fi, wait for the current process to finish and restart only when Windows or Armoury Crate provides that option.

Choose the source that already gives your account a playable entitlement. An owned installable game is enough; Game Pass is optional, and a purchase from another PC storefront remains tied to that storefront.
Owned Xbox or PC titles
Open the Xbox library and look for titles marked as owned and installable. Select a game, choose the install location, let the download complete and then allow the game’s own first-run setup to finish. The library may show games that are cloud-eligible or available through a subscription even when they are not permanently owned, so read the entitlement label before starting a large download.
Game Pass titles
If the signed-in Microsoft account has an eligible subscription, select a title marked as included and install it from the library. ASUS advertises two months of Xbox Game Pass Premium in eligible markets, subject to the offer’s terms. A valid payment method is required for that offer, and the subscription renews unless it is canceled. The library, eligibility, redemption screen and renewal terms vary by region, account, device and date; check the offer displayed for your account rather than assuming every X20 receives the same promotion. An owned game does not require Game Pass.
Steam or another PC storefront
In Xbox mode, open Library > My Apps. Install the Windows client for the storefront you use and sign in there. If the client is not listed, open Edge and obtain it from that storefront’s own website, then return to My Apps or the desktop to launch it. Xbox can aggregate shortcuts from PC stores, but that convenience does not convert a third-party purchase into Xbox ownership or make every title cloud-eligible.

Cloud gaming
Cloud-playable entries have separate subscription, device and supported-region requirements. A cloud listing is not a promise that the same game can be downloaded to the SSD, so use the entry’s displayed install or play option.
Do I need a microSD card for the first game?
No. Start with the internal 1TB SSD if it has room for the title and its updates. Adding a card before the first installation creates an extra formatting and folder-selection step that is unnecessary for a simple day-one setup.
For later expansion, ASUS specifies a microSD Express slot on the X20. A microSD Express card uses that interface. A less expensive UHS-I card can still hold a game library, but it uses its normal UHS-I performance. A UHS-II card inserted into this slot operates at UHS-I speeds; it does not gain the speed advantage associated with UHS-II hardware in other devices. Do not confuse a card labeled for the ROG Xbox Ally (X) with an X20-specific microSD Express product.
How do I prepare a card?
- Back up anything on the card. ASUS’s formatting process erases existing data.
- Insert the card fully while the X20 is powered down or following the device’s safe-removal guidance.
- When Windows or the launcher asks to format the card, choose NTFS if that is the format required by the installation workflow.
- In Xbox or another launcher, select the card as the game-install folder before starting the download.
- Test one installation and confirm that the launcher still sees the folder after a restart before moving a large library.

What should I do on the first launch?
Launch one title only after its download and any game-specific setup have completed. Keep the default X20 display presentation for the first run, then adjust settings for that particular game if necessary.

- Sign in to the game’s own account only if that title requires one; this can be different from the Microsoft account used for Xbox.
- Confirm that the controls respond in the title’s input menu before changing performance settings.
- Quit through the game’s menu when possible, then use the Xbox button or Task View to switch applications.
ASUS says HDR and Auto HDR are configured out of the box on the X20. HDR Native and HDR Vivid are presentation choices, not setup requirements, and some games include their own HDR calibration. Start with the default mode; change the game’s HDR or the X20’s display setting only if the picture is too dim, too bright or incorrectly mapped. ASUS’s display guidance is at the X20 HDR guide.
How can I prepare the X20 for playing away from Wi-Fi?
Offline behavior is game-specific. Before traveling, download the game’s updates and downloadable content, sign in while online and launch that exact game once without a connection to verify its offline behavior. Do not assume that a title listed in your library will work offline merely because it is installed.
Xbox also recommends confirming that the account remains signed in and that any launcher used by the game has completed its own authentication. If a title requires a server, recurring license check or online multiplayer, it may still refuse to start without a connection.
ASUS describes an optional Travel Mode that limits charging to 65W and turns on automatically with Airplane Mode. It is a travel feature, not a requirement for first setup. Turn it on only when its charging behavior suits your power source and travel plan.

Which accessories are actually optional?
The first game needs the handheld, power and an account with a valid game entitlement. A microSD card is only for extra capacity. A USB-C dock is useful for TV or monitor play, but verify that its power-delivery, display-output and port specifications match the X20. An external controller is likewise optional because the X20 has built-in controls.

Do not assume that a case made for an earlier ROG Xbox Ally or a generic 2-in-1 case fits the X20. ASUS documents some X20 bundles and accessories, but bundle contents and regional availability vary. Check the exact model name and fit information before buying.
What does a successful first-game setup look like?
You are ready when Windows setup is complete, the correct account is signed in, Windows and ASUS updates have finished, Xbox components are current, and one title launches from its actual entitlement source. At that point, storage expansion, HDR changes, Travel Mode and TV accessories can be handled as separate choices instead of being mixed into the initial installation.

Can I use the X20 with an Xbox console account I already have?
Yes. Sign into Windows and the Xbox app with the Microsoft account that owns the Xbox purchase or subscription. Games, saves and achievements that support Xbox Play Anywhere or cross-device synchronization depend on that title’s service support, so check the individual game listing rather than assuming every PC version shares progress.
Can two people use separate accounts on one ROG Xbox Ally X20?
Windows can have multiple user accounts, and the Xbox app can be signed into a different Microsoft account. Each person should verify the active Windows and Xbox profiles before installing, because a library belongs to the account that purchased or claims the game.
Why does a game download again after I move it to a card?
Launchers track install folders separately and may not recognize a moved directory until you point them to it or use their own move function. Avoid deleting the original folder until the launcher verifies the new location and shows the game as installed.
Can I connect the X20 to a TV immediately?
Yes, using a compatible USB-C display connection or dock, but TV play is not required for handheld setup. Confirm the dock’s power-delivery and display specifications for the X20, then select the TV as a Windows display after the first game works on the built-in screen.
