If the ROG Xbox Ally X20 is unavailable, buy the ROG Xbox Ally X (RC73XA) for $999.99 unless its OLED screen and upgraded controls are the reason you wanted the X20. The Ally X uses the same Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, 24GB memory, 1TB storage and 80Wh battery, while the X20’s extra $300 mainly pays for a 7.4-inch OLED panel, TMR sticks, a transforming D-pad, rubberized grips and anniversary styling. ASUS still sells both the $599 ROG Xbox Ally and $999 Ally X, so the X20 did not replace either model.
The X20 launched on October 15, 2026, and Windows Central reported that the $1,299 standalone unit and $2,499 bundle had sold out at ASUS.com and Best Buy by October 20. That is a stock snapshot, not a discontinuation; ASUS has published no restock date.

Is the ROG Xbox Ally X20 actually sold out?
Reports indicate a rapid sell-out, but not a permanent withdrawal. Windows Central’s October 20 report, relayed by Shattered and Tech Insider, said both X20 configurations were unavailable at ASUS.com and Best Buy. ComputingForGeeks found no X20 listing in stock on Amazon US on October 27, and noted that Bazzite support was still being tested.
ASUS announced retail availability for October 15 after opening pre-orders on August 25. Its 20th-anniversary model costs $1,299 in the United States, with ASUS’s store showing $1,299.99. The bundle costs $2,499 and adds ROG XREAL R1 Edition 20 AR glasses, a custom Killswitch case and a Pelican Protector Case. No official restock date has been announced, so treat any reseller listing as a live-stock and warranty decision rather than proof of a scheduled replenishment.

Did the X20 replace the Ally X?
No. ASUS said on October 15 that both the ROG XBOX Ally and ROG XBOX Ally X “are also still available for sale at their original MSRPs of US$599 and US$999 respectively.” The X20 is a limited 20th-anniversary tier above them, not a new generation that retires the Ally X.

The Ally X’s panel is an IPS display, not OLED. ASUS, IGN, Wikipedia and PCGamesN all identify it as a 7-inch 1080p 120Hz IPS screen. Secondary tables that copy the X20’s 7.4-inch OLED specification onto the Ally X are incorrect.
Why is the ROG Xbox Ally X the default buy-now choice?
The Ally X preserves the X20’s core performance platform for $300 less. It has the same processor, memory capacity, 1TB drive, 80Wh battery, USB4 port, Xbox button layout and Xbox full-screen boot experience. It has also had a year of software updates and accessory support.
You give up the X20’s OLED contrast and HDR, 0.4 inches of diagonal size, magnetic TMR sticks, transforming D-pad, rubberized grips, anniversary chassis and some newer Armoury Crate features. Digital Foundry’s Richard Leadbetter summarized the hardware overlap: “After all, it’s the same AMD Z2 Extreme processor, the same perfectly fine 24GB of LPDDR5 memory, the same 1TB SSD, the same 80Wh battery.”
The LCD is still suitable for games. Edward Chester’s PCGamesN review described the Ally X IPS panel as working well for gaming, while noting that it cannot produce especially low black levels or the contrast and punch of OLED. Buy from ASUS, Best Buy, Microsoft or Amazon at the normal $999.99 price when possible. Search for “Xbox” in the product name so you do not confuse it with the 2024 ROG Ally X using the older Z1 Extreme platform.
Should you buy the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ instead?
Choose the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ if higher frame rates and longer gaming endurance matter more than OLED or Xbox-specific ergonomics. It costs $1,799 and uses Intel’s Arc G3 Extreme graphics, 32GB LPDDR5x, an 8-inch 1920×1200 IPS display with 48–120Hz VRR, Wi-Fi 7 and two Thunderbolt 4 ports. It weighs 1.7 pounds.

In Jason England’s Tom’s Guide comparison, the Claw reached 63.8 frames per second in Red Dead Redemption 2 at 1080p Medium and 35W, versus 23 fps for the X20; at 17W it reached 48.8 fps. In Cyberpunk 2077 at 720p High native, results were 27.01 fps for the Claw and 11.87 fps for the X20. Tom’s Guide also reported 171.5 fps for the Claw with XeSS and four-times multi-frame generation, a different setting that should not be compared with the native result. Shadow of the Tomb Raider at 1080p High measured 66 fps on the Claw and 31 fps on the X20.
The same Tom’s Guide gaming battery rundown lasted 4 hours 10 minutes on the Claw and 2 hours 47 minutes on the X20. England’s verdict was that MSI “just dominates here” for performance, while the X20 won on OLED quality, ergonomics and its $500 lower price. Tech Insider found several regional MSI stores unavailable, sold out or on backorder on October 24, so confirm stock before paying a premium.
Is Legion Go 2 the best OLED alternative?
Legion Go 2 is the strongest choice for a large OLED canvas, detachable controllers and kickstand play. Typical configurations use an 8.8-inch 1920×1200 OLED panel up to 144Hz, VESA True Black 1000/HDR1000, TrueStrike detachable controllers, up to 32GB LPDDR5X, up to 2TB storage and a 74Wh battery. Weight is about 920g, considerably more than the X20.
US pricing is unusually inconsistent. During October 14–21, 2026, listings included $1,999.99 for a 1TB model, $3,081.99 for a 32GB/2TB configuration marked unavailable, and an $3,999 8TB Walmart listing. Older guides cited roughly $1,199–$1,349 street prices. There is no dependable single US MSRP to publish; verify the exact, orderable SKU on Lenovo’s US store.
Legion Go 2 is not an Xbox-native shell, and its detachable controls make it heavier and less compact. Pick it when screen size, tabletop use or a mouse-like controller mode outweigh portability and price certainty.
Is Steam Deck OLED a better value?
Steam Deck OLED is the sensible lower-cost OLED option when your library is primarily Steam and you prefer a console-like SteamOS interface. Valve lists a 7.4-inch 1280×800 HDR OLED display at 90Hz, a 50Wh battery, Wi-Fi 6E, trackpads, gyro controls and roughly 640g weight. Peak brightness is listed at 1,000 nits, and the 1TB version adds anti-glare etched glass.

Valve’s store prices checked in October 2026 were $789 for 512GB and $949 for 1TB. Valve describes the OLED model as having 30–50% more battery life than the LCD Deck, with a content-dependent 3–12-hour range in its specifications. These figures are not directly comparable with ASUS’s or Tom’s Guide’s gaming tests.
Deck OLED is not a Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme performance match and does not provide native Windows Xbox full-screen, Game Pass PC or Play Anywhere behavior. Choose it for SteamOS simplicity, lower cost and OLED, not for the X20’s 1080p AAA headroom. Lenovo’s Legion Go S Powered by SteamOS is another SteamOS option, with an 8-inch 1200p IPS screen and Ryzen Z2 Go at roughly $800–$830 on Amazon in the October 27 check, but its chip is weaker than the Ally X.

Is the $599 ROG Xbox Ally enough?
The base ROG Xbox Ally is the right entry point for Game Pass, indies, older AAA games and buyers who want the Xbox handheld interface at the lowest official price. Its Ryzen Z2 A processor, 16GB memory, 512GB storage, 60Wh battery and 670g weight make it lighter than the Ally X and X20. It retains a 7-inch 1080p 120Hz IPS screen and Hall-effect triggers.
It lacks the Ally X’s 24GB memory, 1TB drive, USB4, impulse triggers and 80Wh battery. ASUS’s own claim is up to a 20% performance increase over the original ROG Ally in selected games at 720p, not a guarantee of X20-class 1080p performance. Buy it when budget and weight matter more than demanding new releases.
What does the Acer Predator Atlas 8 offer at the same price?
Acer’s Predator Atlas 8 was reported around a $1,299.99 Best Buy launch price on October 23. It pairs an 8-inch 16:10 IPS panel with Intel Arc G-series graphics, up to 24GB memory, dual Thunderbolt 4 and Wi-Fi 7. It is a rational choice only if you prefer a taller IPS display and Intel docking at roughly X20 money.
It does not replicate the X20’s OLED contrast, Xbox-centered controls or anniversary ergonomics. Reported configurations vary between Arc G3 and G3 Extreme, so confirm the exact SKU before comparing performance.

What software and library differences matter?
The ROG Xbox Ally family boots into Microsoft’s Xbox full-screen experience, integrates Game Pass and Play Anywhere, and uses Xbox-oriented buttons and a dedicated Xbox key. Microsoft began rolling the mode to other Windows 11 handhelds in April 2026; it estimates up to 2GB of memory saved and two-thirds lower idle power than a complete Windows shell. Check whether the mode is enabled on a competing model rather than assuming it is exclusive.
Windows remains underneath. Digital Foundry’s X20 coverage and PCGamesN’s Ally X review both describe onboarding, desktop fallback and sleep-while-downloading behavior that still feels like a PC. Advanced Shader Delivery is working on the X20 and reduces shader-compilation stutter compared with the Ally X’s launch-year software.
Linux alternatives can change results. ComputingForGeeks cited a Notebookcheck-reported Cyber Dopamine comparison in which Kingdom Come: Deliverance II at 17W ran at 47 fps on Windows and 62 fps on Bazzite on an Ally X. That was one creator’s test with an older Bazzite build, not a universal operating-system multiplier. In October 2026, Bazzite support for the X20 was still being tested, although Valve had added controller, TDP and audio support for the ROG Xbox Ally series.
How do battery claims compare?
Use the test conditions, not a single leaderboard. ASUS rates the Ally X for up to 9.9 hours of light gaming in Hollow Knight: Silksong at Silent 13W and up to 2.7 hours of heavy Cyberpunk 2077 play at Performance 17W. Tom’s Guide’s separate gaming rundown recorded 2 hours 47 minutes for the X20 and 4 hours 10 minutes for the Claw 8 EX AI+. Valve quotes 3–12 hours for Steam Deck OLED depending on content and says it offers 30–50% more battery life than the LCD model.

- Storage: Ally and Ally X use replaceable M.2 2280 PCIe Gen4 drives, making a 2TB upgrade practical. The X20 uses a 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe drive. The Ally and Ally X support UHS-II microSD; the X20 is listed with microSD Express.
- Displays: ASUS’s X20 and Ally X support USB4, while the X20 bundle includes a 68W USB-C charger and the Ally family generally ships with a 65W charger. Verify the charger included with a particular regional SKU.
- Docking: ASUS’s ROG Bulwark Dock range is intended for TV and monitor play. ASUS also sells a 100W charger dock.
- External graphics: ASUS markets the ROG XG Mobile eGPU for Ally X and X20 over USB4, with configurations up to an RTX 5090 Laptop GPU.
- Cases: The X20’s $2,499 bundle includes custom Killswitch and Pelican cases; a separate first-party 2-in-1 premium case is also listed.
Should you wait for an X20 restock or buy the Ally X?
Wait if the 7.4-inch OLED, HDR highlights, TMR sticks or transforming D-pad are the reason you chose the X20. The X20’s visual upgrade is substantial: Digital Foundry’s Richard Leadbetter called the screen “beautiful and genuinely game-changing in much the same way that Switch OLED comprehensively bested its LCD stablemates.”

Buy the Ally X now if you mainly want Z2 Extreme performance, Xbox integration, 1TB storage and long battery capacity. You are not giving up a faster processor by choosing it; you are choosing an IPS display and older control hardware. If a restock appears later, the X20 premium is easiest to justify as an OLED-and-controls upgrade rather than a frame-rate upgrade.
How to choose in 30 seconds
- Need Xbox and Windows now? Buy the ROG Xbox Ally X at $999.99.
- Need OLED above all else? Wait for the X20; consider Steam Deck OLED if SteamOS and lower performance are acceptable.
- Need maximum AAA frame rate and endurance? Check stock for the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ and accept its IPS screen and $1,799 price.
- Want the biggest OLED and detachable controllers? Consider Legion Go 2 only after confirming an orderable US SKU and price.
- Need the lowest Xbox-family price? Choose the $599 ROG Xbox Ally for lighter games.
- Prefer Intel and a tall screen? Compare the exact Acer Predator Atlas 8 configuration at its reported $1,299.99 launch price.
How these alternatives were selected
The ranking weighs current US availability, display type and HDR, processor and memory headroom, battery figures under named tests, Xbox-versus-SteamOS library fit, weight and controller design, and whether the reported US price is stable enough to guide a purchase. The Ally X ranks first because it matches the X20’s core platform while remaining an official, regularly priced model.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Xbox Game Pass on Steam Deck OLED?
Not as a native Windows Xbox handheld experience. Game Pass PC titles generally require Windows or streaming, while Steam Deck OLED is designed around SteamOS and the Steam library.
Does the Ally X include Game Pass?
ASUS lists a three-month Xbox Game Pass promotion with the Ally X. The offer is a first-party bundle and can vary by region, account eligibility and redemption date.
Will a 2TB SSD work in the ROG Xbox Ally X?
The Ally X uses an M.2 2280 PCIe Gen4 slot, so a compatible 2TB drive is the relevant upgrade class. Reinstalling Windows and restoring the Xbox/Armoury Crate software is part of the migration process.
Is the X20 faster than the Ally X in games?
The two handhelds use the same Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme platform, 24GB memory class and 80Wh battery. Any difference generally comes from cooling, firmware, display settings or game configuration rather than a new processor generation.
