rpcrtremote.dll Errors: Repair the Windows Component Safely

By VGSources Team 8 min read

rpcrtremote.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system file, not a game-specific runtime. If Windows says rpcrtremote.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

What is rpcrtremote.dll

The file is described as Remote RPC Extension and is associated with the Microsoft Windows Operating System. It normally belongs in:

C:WindowsSystem32

A 64-bit installation can also contain a 32-bit copy under:

C:WindowsSysWOW64

The two directories serve different system architectures. Do not swap files between them merely because the filename matches.

“Remote RPC Extension” is the file description, not the name of a separately installed program. The exact version, size, hash, and architecture vary with the Windows release, build, servicing level, and system type.

First, identify the failure

The repair path depends on when the error appears:

  • During Windows startup or sign-in: treat it as Windows system corruption and start with DISM and SFC.
  • When launching one application: repair Windows first, then repair the named application if the error remains.
  • After an update or driver installation: use System Restore or remove the triggering update.
  • After antivirus detection: inspect quarantine before restoring anything.
  • With “not designed to run on Windows” or “contains an error”: suspect corruption, an architecture mismatch, a bad update, or damaged dependencies rather than a missing Visual C++ runtime.

If the message names USERENV.dll, LogonUI.exe, or Userinit.exe as well, that usually indicates broader Windows corruption. It does not prove that rpcrtremote.dll belongs to those files or programs.

Fix 1: Repair Windows component storage and system files

This is the safest and most likely fix. Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker because SFC may need a healthy component store as its repair source. Follow Microsoft’s SFC and DISM repair instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install pending updates first

  1. Press Windows+I to open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Choose Check for updates.
  4. Install all available updates.
  5. Restart Windows, even if it does not request a restart.

Then open an elevated Command Prompt:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Choose Yes at the User Account Control prompt.

Run this command first:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Wait for it to reach completion. It can pause at a percentage for several minutes. Do not close the window while it is working.

After DISM completes successfully, run:

sfc /scannow

Allow the scan to reach 100 percent, then restart the computer.

Read the result

  • “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations” means SFC found no damaged protected files. If the error remains, continue with the application and recovery steps below.
  • “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them” means the repair was successful. Restart and test the affected program.
  • “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them” means the component store or another dependency still needs repair. Run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC.
  • DISM reports that source files could not be found: Windows Update may be damaged. Use a genuine, matching Windows installation source with a command such as:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess

Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the path to a legitimate repair source matching your Windows edition and architecture. Do not use a random downloaded DLL as the source.

Repeatedly running SFC and DISM without knowing whether the component store changed can make troubleshooting tedious. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it identifies; its full version performs the repair. It is optional, and Windows repair commands remain the appropriate first step.

Fix 2: Check the file’s location and digital signature

A file named rpcrtremote.dll is not automatically safe just because the name is correct. A copy in an unusual application folder, Downloads, Temp, or a user profile deserves verification.

Check the path

  1. Press Windows+E.
  2. Select This PC.
  3. Open the Windows drive, usually C:.
  4. Open Windows, then System32.
  5. Look for rpcrtremote.dll.

On 64-bit Windows, do not delete a copy in SysWOW64. Multiple copies can be normal because Windows maintains separate 64-bit and 32-bit system directories.

Check the signature

  1. Right-click the DLL.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Digital Signatures tab.
  4. Select the signature and click Details.
  5. Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and identifies Microsoft as the signer.

If the file is unsigned, has an invalid signature, or is in an unexpected location, do not replace it by downloading another copy. Run Microsoft Defender, remove the untrusted replacement through proper recovery, and repeat DISM and SFC.

The filename alone cannot establish whether a particular copy is correct. Build, architecture, signature, dependencies, and location all matter.

Fix 3: Repair the application that reports the error

If Windows starts normally and only one application fails, the application may have a damaged installation or a broken dependency. It still does not own rpcrtremote.dll, but its installation may be exposing a Windows problem.

  • 256 GB SSD of storage.
  • Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
  • Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.

Try the application’s built-in repair option:

  1. Open Settings with Windows+I.
  2. Select Apps, then Installed apps.
  3. Find the affected application.
  4. Select the three-dot menu.
  5. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  6. Select Repair.
  7. Restart the application.

If Repair does not help, select Reset only if you understand that it may remove the application’s local settings or data. Otherwise, uninstall the application, restart Windows, and reinstall it using the developer’s official installer.

Do not copy rpcrtremote.dll into the application’s folder. If Windows itself is damaged, that workaround leaves the underlying problem unresolved and can introduce a mismatched file.

Fix 4: Roll back a recent update or system change

If the error began immediately after a Windows update, driver installation, software installation, or abrupt shutdown, restore the earlier system state.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use System Restore in normal Windows

  1. Press Windows+R.
  2. Enter:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Choose a different restore point, if shown.
  3. Select a restore point from before the error began.
  4. Click Next, then Finish.
  5. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore normally preserves personal files while rolling back system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs.

Remove a recent update

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Choose Update history.
  4. Select Uninstall updates.
  5. Remove the most recent update that matches the timing of the failure.
  6. Restart and test Windows.

Do not remove multiple updates at random. If the first rollback does not help, use System Restore or return to DISM and SFC.

Fix 5: Use Windows Recovery Environment if Windows will not boot

If the error appears before the desktop or prevents sign-in, use Windows Recovery Environment rather than trying to replace the DLL manually.

From the sign-in screen:

  1. Hold Shift.
  2. Select Power, then Restart.
  3. On the recovery screen, select Troubleshoot.
  4. Choose Advanced options.

Microsoft documents these Windows Recovery Environment options:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • System Restore rolls back to an earlier restore point.
  • Uninstall Updates removes a recent quality or feature update.
  • Startup Repair attempts to correct startup-related problems.
  • Command Prompt allows offline repair by an experienced administrator.

If you use Command Prompt from WinRE, Windows may not be assigned drive letter C:. Use diskpart, then list volume, to identify the volume containing the Windows folder before attempting offline commands.

If Windows 11 offers Settings > System > Recovery > Reinstall now, that repair reinstall can reinstall the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings on supported systems. If it is unavailable or fails, back up personal data and use Microsoft’s Windows recovery options.

Fix 6: Check disk damage and malware

Unexpected shutdowns, file-system errors, failing storage, malware cleanup, and damaged component storage can all result in a missing or corrupted system DLL.

First back up important files. Then:

  1. Open Windows Security from Start.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Scan options.
  4. Run a Full scan.
  5. If compromise is suspected, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan.

If antivirus quarantined the file:

  1. Open your security program.
  2. Open Protection history or Quarantine.
  3. Inspect the detection path and signature information.
  4. Restore it only if it is a valid Microsoft-signed file in the expected Windows directory.
  5. Otherwise leave it quarantined and repair Windows with DISM and SFC.

Persistent corruption after repair can indicate storage trouble. Check the drive manufacturer’s health information and back up data before attempting extensive recovery. Repeated file corruption should not be treated as a simple DLL download problem.

Fix 7: Update a related driver only when timing supports it

A driver is not the normal owner of rpcrtremote.dll, so Device Manager is not the first repair location. Use it if the problem began directly after a hardware or driver change.

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the category related to the changed hardware.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Properties, then open the Driver tab.
  6. Choose Roll Back Driver if available.
  7. If rollback is unavailable, select Update Driver and choose Search automatically for drivers.
  8. Restart Windows.

For a manufacturer driver, download only from the computer or hardware manufacturer’s official support page. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers, while driver installation is performed by the full version. It is optional, and rolling back the specific driver remains preferable when the error clearly followed that update.

What not to do

Do not download a loose DLL

Random DLL download sites sites can provide malware, an invalid signature, the wrong architecture, or a file from an incompatible Windows build. Even a genuine file may not fix the damaged component store or its dependencies.

The safe sources are Windows servicing, System Restore, Windows Recovery Environment, a matching Windows installation source, or a clean Windows repair installation.

Do not run regsvr32 as a generic repair

regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It does not reconstruct protected Windows files or repair the component store. Microsoft explains its intended behavior in the regsvr32 command documentation.

Running:

regsvr32 rpcrtremote.dll

normally will not repair this Windows component and may produce another error.

Do not substitute files by architecture or version

Do not copy a 32-bit file into System32, copy a 64-bit file into SysWOW64, or use an older Windows copy because the filename matches. Windows servicing must restore the version appropriate for the installed build.

FAQ

Is rpcrtremote.dll malware?

The normal Microsoft file and its expected Windows location are legitimate. An identically named file elsewhere is not automatically malware, but verify its path and Microsoft digital signature and scan it before trusting it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is rpcrtremote.dll part of Windows or an application?

It is a Windows system component associated with Microsoft Windows, not a standalone Remote RPC Extension program. An application may expose the error when it starts, but that does not make the application the file’s owner.

Do I need Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?

Not as the first response. A missing or corrupted rpcrtremote.dll generally calls for DISM and SFC. Repair the named application and its runtimes only if the application has a separate, documented dependency problem.

Which Windows versions contain it?

Evidence exists for Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10. The exact current Windows 11 file version and build should be verified from the installed system rather than guessed from the filename.

What if SFC cannot repair it?

Run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. If it still fails, use Safe Mode, a matching installation source, System Restore, Windows RE, or a repair reinstall. Back up your files before using Reset this PC or a clean installation.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I copy the DLL manually?

Only as an advanced recovery procedure using a trusted Windows installation source or a known-good copy from the identical Windows build, architecture, and servicing level. Manual copying is not a safe first-line fix.
