“The code execution cannot proceed because sxsstore.dll was not found.” Another common message is: “sxsstore.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
sxsstore.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component, not a Visual C++ Redistributable file or a standalone program. It belongs to Windows side-by-side and component-servicing infrastructure, so the safest repair is usually Windows Update, DISM, and then System File Checker rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

Which fix applies to you
Use the path that matches what you see:
- The error appears in several programs, during Windows Update, or after a system crash: repair Windows with DISM and SFC.
- Only one game or application fails: repair or reinstall that application after completing Windows repair.
- The file is in
%windir%System32: treat it as a protected Windows component. Do not delete or replace it manually. - The file is in a Temp, Downloads, or application folder: scan the file and computer for malware before trusting it.
- The issue began immediately after an update or installation: consider System Restore if normal servicing repair fails.
- DISM and SFC cannot repair the component store: use a matching repair source, an in-place Windows repair, or reinstall Windows.
What is sxsstore.dll
sxsstore.dll is identified as Sxs Store DLL and is associated with Microsoft Windows. It supports the component store used by side-by-side assemblies, Windows Update, system recovery, and DISM servicing.
The normal system location is:
%windir%System32sxsstore.dll
Windows also maintains protected component files in the WinSxS component store. A file visible in System32 may be linked to or serviced from that protected store. Do not manually clean, rename, or delete WinSxS files. Microsoft warns that doing so can prevent Windows from starting or receiving updates.

The exact file version depends on the Windows release, architecture, servicing level, and language. There is no single universal size, hash, or version that applies to every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation.
This file is not normally repaired by installing Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or a separate runtime package. It is a Windows operating-system component.
Fix 1: Install updates and restart Windows
Incomplete servicing is a common cause of component errors.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Open Start and select Settings.
- In Windows 11, choose Windows Update. In Windows 10, choose Update & Security, then Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Try opening the affected application again.
If the error remains, continue with DISM. Do not repeatedly retry the application while Windows component repair is still pending.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM, then SFC
Microsoft recommends DISM before SFC because DISM repairs the Windows component source that SFC uses.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Restart Windows when DISM completes successfully.
A successful result normally says that the restore operation completed successfully and that the operation completed successfully.
Run System File Checker
After restarting:
- Open Command Prompt as administrator again.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart the computer.
- Launch the program that reported the error.
SFC may report that it found corrupt files and repaired them. That is a good result. If it says it found corrupt files but could not repair some of them, run DISM again, restart, and run SFC once more.
When manually hunting through CBS logs or repeating DISM and SFC without knowing what changed becomes the difficult part, Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan finds; repairs are performed by the full version, but it is not required and Windows servicing remains the primary fix.
Fix 3: Use a matching DISM repair source
DISM may fail when Windows Update cannot supply the required repair files. In that case, use a valid Windows installation or repair source that matches your installed release and architecture.
The command format is:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the actual path to the matching source.
Do not use a random folder copied from another computer. The source should match the installed Windows build, architecture, language, and edition as closely as possible. An incompatible source can fail or leave the component store in an inconsistent state.

Fix 4: Repair or reinstall the affected application
If Windows repair succeeds but only one application still reports sxsstore.dll, the application installation may be damaged. The error does not automatically mean that the application should contain its own copy of this Windows file.
Try the application’s official repair option first:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps in Windows 11, or Apps & features in Windows 10.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart the application.
For a game launcher, use its Verify files, Repair, or equivalent option. If that does not help, uninstall the application, restart Windows, and reinstall it using the developer’s official installer.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not copy sxsstore.dll beside the program executable. That can create a version or architecture mismatch and can conceal the real problem.
If the application is old, check whether its developer provides a Windows 10 or Windows 11 update. Only install runtimes explicitly required by that application’s official documentation.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine and suspicious file locations
Security software may quarantine a damaged or suspicious file. Open your antivirus application’s quarantine or protection history and check whether it removed a file named sxsstore.dll.

Fix 6: Check architecture and Windows servicing state
Windows 32-bit and 64-bit installations use different component files and servicing packages. A 32-bit application running on 64-bit Windows does not mean you should download a second copy of sxsstore.dll.
Avoid replacing the file with one taken from:
- Another computer
- A different Windows release
- A different language installation
- An unofficial DLL repository
- A “latest version” package
Even when the filename matches, the binary may have the wrong architecture, dependencies, signature, or servicing relationship.
Windows should restore its own protected component through DISM and SFC. If CBS logs mention Microsoft-Windows-SxS-Store, WinSxS, hash mismatches, or inability to repair an assembly, continue with component-store repair rather than application-folder replacement.

A driver is not the normal owner of sxsstore.dll, so Device Manager is not the first repair step. Use it only if the problem started after a graphics, storage, chipset, or other driver change and Event Viewer or the affected application identifies that driver.
To check drivers:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant device category.
- Right-click the device and choose Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Review the provider, date, and version.
- Use Update Driver or Roll Back Driver when appropriate.
- Restart Windows.
Avoid forcing a driver from an unrelated model or architecture. Download drivers from the computer, motherboard, or device manufacturer’s official support page.
When checking many device versions manually is the problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can use its free scan to show which drivers it identifies as outdated; driver installation is handled by the full version, and it is optional rather than a required fix for sxsstore.dll.
Why regsvr32 is not the fix
Do not run:
regsvr32 sxsstore.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. The available export information for sxsstore.dll does not show that entry point. Registration is therefore not the normal repair mechanism and may produce an entry-point error.

DISM and SFC repair protected Windows components. They do not depend on manually registering this file.
What to do when DISM and SFC fail
First, make sure Command Prompt is running as administrator. If SFC cannot run normally, try Safe Mode and run it again.
To create a smaller report of SFC findings, run:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log >"%userprofile%Desktopsfcdetails.txt"
If the component store itself cannot be repaired:
- Back up important personal files.
- Check the CBS and DISM logs for the failing component.
- Try a matching
/Sourcerepair as described above. - If the problem began after a recent update or installation, try System Restore.
- Use an in-place Windows repair if Windows still starts but servicing remains damaged.
- Reinstall Windows only after less destructive recovery options fail.
To open System Restore, press Windows key + R, type:
rstrui.exe
Press Enter, select an appropriate restore point, and follow the wizard. Restore points can revert monitored system files, registry state, drivers, and applications. They do not replace a backup of personal documents.

Manual replacement is an advanced offline-recovery procedure only. It requires a known-good file from the same Windows build, architecture, language, and signature, plus identification of the exact damaged component. It is not the normal solution.
Frequently asked questions
Is sxsstore.dll a Microsoft file?
Yes. It is a Windows component associated with the side-by-side and component-servicing infrastructure.
Can I download sxsstore.dll separately?
Do not use random DLL download sites. There is no general Microsoft download page for this file as an individual replacement. Use Windows Update, DISM, and SFC instead.
Should I copy it into System32?
No. System32 and WinSxS are protected Windows locations. Let Windows restore the correct file through servicing.
What does “specified module could not be found” mean?
It can mean that the named file is missing, but it can also mean that a dependency required by the file is missing. Repair Windows before assuming the filename itself is the only problem.
Is every sxsstore.dll outside System32 malware?
No, but location matters. A copy in an application directory may be legitimate only in a specific context. A copy in Temp or Downloads deserves immediate security checking.
Will reinstalling Visual C++ fix it?
Usually not. sxsstore.dll is not presented as a Visual C++ Redistributable component. If only one application fails, repair or reinstall that application after repairing Windows.
Why did SFC repair the file but the application still fail?
The application may have additional damaged files, missing dependencies, incompatible settings, or a separate installation problem. Use its official repair or verification feature, then reinstall it if necessary.
