RTX 5090 Cards Reached MSRP in Finland—But U.S. Buyers Still Faced a Caveat

RTX 5090 cards were spotted near MSRP in Finland in May 2025, but the regional stock sighting did not prove that U.S. availability or pricing had recovered.

The short version: RTX 5090 graphics cards were spotted at or near official pricing in Finland in May 2025, but that did not mean the GPU had become widely available at MSRP. The sighting was regional, potentially limited to a small shipment, and offered no proof that U.S. buyers could reliably purchase the Founders Edition for $1,999.

What actually happened

On May 9, 2025, RTX 5090 cards appeared at official or near-official prices in Finland. The reported Finnish MSRP was €2,339, while an MSI GeForce RTX 5090 Ventus 3X model was listed at €2,455.90. That was notable because shortages had pushed some custom RTX 5090 cards above $3,000 at retail.

However, this was a Finnish stock sighting—not evidence of a global supply recovery. It did not establish that every RTX 5090 model was available at MSRP, that U.S. retailers had normalized pricing, or that inventory would remain available after the initial shipment. HotHardware’s original report also described U.S. availability as sporadic and extremely limited.

What is the RTX 5090 MSRP?

NVIDIA launched the GeForce RTX 5090 Founders Edition at $1,999 in the United States, with availability scheduled for January 30, 2025, according to its launch announcement. NVIDIA’s marketplace listing also showed the Founders Edition at $1,999, although that listing was marked out of stock when checked roughly four weeks before August 18, 2026.

  • Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4. System Requirements: Minimum 850W PSU with 16-pin 12V-2x6 (12VHPWR) connector required. Verify before purchasing.
  • Military-grade components deliver rock-solid power and longer lifespan for ultimate durability. Compatibility: 348mm (13.7") length, 3.6 slots, 4.3 lbs. Confirm case clearance and slot spacing. GPU bracket included.
  • Protective PCB coating helps protect against short circuits caused by moisture, dust, or debris
  • 3.6-slot design with massive fin array optimized for airflow from three Axial-tech fans
  • Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads

MSRP means the manufacturer’s suggested retail price. It is not a promise that every board-partner card will sell for that amount. A Founders Edition, a basic partner card, and a heavily overclocked liquid-cooled model can all use the same RTX 5090 GPU while carrying very different prices.

Price reference What it means
$1,999 U.S. launch price for NVIDIA’s Founders Edition
€2,339 Historical Finnish MSRP reported in May 2025
€2,455.90 Historical price reported for an MSI Ventus 3X model in Finland
More than $3,000 Reported retail pricing for some premium U.S. partner cards

European prices cannot be converted directly into U.S. checkout prices. VAT, currency movements, distribution costs, retailer margins, and regional pricing policies all affect the final amount.

Why the sighting did not prove the shortage was over

A single listing or shipment can create the appearance of normal availability without changing the broader market. “In stock” might mean one unit, inventory at a distant branch, or a short-lived allocation. A product page showing a price is also not the same as having a deliverable card.

Reports from U.S. stores suggested how constrained launch supply could be, but those observations were anecdotal. One launch-day comparison cited four RTX 5090 cards at a local Micro Center versus more than 150 RTX 4090 cards. That illustrates scarcity at one store; it cannot measure worldwide inventory.

The report also discussed AI demand and possible allocation pressure as explanations for the shortage. Those are analysis and speculation, not a confirmed NVIDIA statement about production priorities.

Why demand for the RTX 5090 was so intense

The RTX 5090 targets several demanding markets at once: 4K gaming, high-refresh-rate play, ray tracing, video production, 3D rendering, and local AI workloads. NVIDIA lists the card with:

  • 32GB of GDDR7 memory
  • 21,760 CUDA cores
  • A 512-bit memory interface
  • 1,792GB/sec of memory bandwidth
  • 575W total graphics power
  • A recommended 1,000W system power supply, depending on the rest of the system

Those specifications explain the attraction, particularly for workloads that benefit from abundant VRAM. They do not, by themselves, guarantee a specific gaming performance increase.

How much faster is it than an RTX 4090?

Reported testing placed the RTX 5090 roughly 20% to 30% ahead of the RTX 4090 in average gaming performance, with one launch report finding about a 22%–23% improvement. The exact result depends on the game, resolution, CPU, ray-tracing settings, and test methodology.

Native rendering, ray-traced performance, DLSS upscaling, and frame generation should be treated separately. Generated frames can produce much larger displayed frame-rate increases than raw rendering performance, but they are not equivalent to a 2× or 3× increase in the GPU’s underlying rendering speed.

Is a $3,000 partner card equivalent to the $1,999 Founders Edition?

No. Partner cards may offer larger or quieter coolers, factory overclocks, higher power limits, liquid cooling, different dimensions, or longer warranty coverage. Those features can justify some premium, but scarcity alone does not make a $3,000 card good value compared with a $1,999 Founders Edition.

When comparing models, separate three kinds of pricing:

  1. MSRP pricing: close to the official price for the relevant region and SKU.
  2. Product premium: extra cost for a materially different cooler, warranty, design, or power limit.
  3. Scarcity premium: extra cost caused mainly by limited supply, reseller behavior, or speculation.

Should you wait or buy now?

Wait for a near-MSRP card if:

  • You already own an RTX 4090 or another high-end RTX 40-series GPU.
  • You specifically want the Founders Edition.
  • You are unwilling to pay a large scarcity premium.
  • You have no urgent work deadline and can monitor authorized retailers.

Pay for a premium partner card if:

  • You need the GPU immediately for paid work.
  • The cooler, noise level, warranty, dimensions, or power limit matters to you.
  • You have confirmed the seller, return policy, and warranty eligibility.
  • The premium is acceptable compared with the cost of delayed productivity.

Consider another GPU or a prebuilt if:

  • You need a complete system upgrade rather than only a graphics card.
  • Your case, power supply, or cooling system cannot support a 575W GPU.
  • Your workload does not benefit from 32GB of VRAM or NVIDIA-specific software.
  • A prebuilt can deliver the required components without the cost and uncertainty of chasing separate GPU stock.

Compatibility checks before buying

According to NVIDIA’s official specifications, the RTX 5090 requires more planning than a typical graphics-card upgrade.

  • Power supply: NVIDIA recommends a 1,000W system PSU, although the correct capacity depends on the CPU and other components. The card can use a 600W PCIe Gen 5 cable or the included adapter with multiple PCIe 8-pin cables. Use a reputable PSU and follow its cabling instructions.
  • Case clearance: the listed Founders Edition dimensions are 304mm long, 137mm wide, and two slots. Partner cards can be considerably larger. Check radiator, front-fan, drive-cage, and power-connector clearance.
  • Airflow: a 575W GPU creates substantial heat. A ventilated case and adequate CPU cooling are essential, and a premium GPU cooler does not guarantee that the card will fit your case.
  • Display setup: high-resolution and high-refresh-rate modes depend on the monitor, cable, compression, and selected display mode.
  • Workload: gaming results depend on resolution, ray tracing, DLSS, the game engine, and CPU limits. In creative and AI applications, VRAM capacity and software support may matter more than average FPS.

How to interpret availability claims

Before placing an order, verify that the listing is for the standalone GPU, not a complete PC; identify whether the card is new, used, refurbished, or imported; confirm the exact SKU and seller; and check the return window and warranty eligibility. “Notify me,” preorder, and backorder status do not mean immediate availability.

Most importantly, do not treat a historical Finnish listing as a current U.S. buying alert. The May 2025 report showed that some inventory could reach official pricing in at least one European market. It did not prove that NVIDIA had solved production constraints or that a $1,999 Founders Edition would be easy to obtain.
