Rumor: Half-Life 3 Is Nearly Complete, but No 2026 Release Is Confirmed

The Half-Life 3 playable rumor began in 2025. A newer 2026 claim says almost complete, but Valve has not confirmed the game or a release date.

No. The claim that Half-Life 3 is “playable end-to-end” came from a leaker in 2025, alongside a guess that it could launch that winter. That prediction did not come true. A separate report in July 2026 relayed a newer claim that the game was almost complete, but gave no reveal or release date. Neither report establishes Valve’s current development status or confirms a 2026 release.

Where the “playable end-to-end” rumor came from

On May 3, 2025, Engadget reported that Valve-focused leaker Tyler McVicker had described the project as “playable, end-to-end” during a Q&A livestream. McVicker speculated that it might be announced in summer and released in winter 2025. Engadget characterized the report as a rumor and noted that Valve had not officially confirmed a follow-up. Engadget’s May 3, 2025 report

PCWorld repeated the playable-state and possible same-year release claims on May 5, 2025, while also saying Valve had made no official Half-Life 3 announcement. That article was first published by sister publication PC-WELT, then translated and localized. PCWorld’s May 5, 2025 report

Those articles report what McVicker said; they do not independently verify the project’s state. More importantly for anyone asking about a release “this year,” the prediction concerned 2025. It is not evidence that a 2026 launch is planned.

What the 2026 reports actually say

February: a separate “done” claim

PC Gamer reported on February 6, 2026, on a separate claim that the game was done and developers had moved to other work. Former Valve writer Chet Faliszek responded sarcastically to the notion that developers would simply relax after finishing a game: “They’ve been done for months! They just sit on the game! They’re just relaxing, that’s entirely how games are made.” His remarks mock the claim; they are not confirmation of Half-Life 3’s status. PC Gamer’s February 6, 2026 report

July: “almost complete,” with no date

On July 10, 2026, ComicBook.com reported a newer McVicker claim that the Valve game was almost completed, with graphical reworks possibly slowing it down. The report says McVicker did not commit to a reveal or release date. It also notes that an earlier, similar report in 2025 had not led to the expected launch. ComicBook.com’s July 10, 2026 report

“Almost complete” is a different attributed claim from the 2025 “playable, end-to-end” description. Neither wording is an official Valve status update, and the July report does not support a specific 2026 release window.

How to read the claims

Report date Claim and source What it establishes
May 3, 2025 Engadget reported McVicker’s “playable, end-to-end” claim and his guess of a summer announcement and winter release. An attributed rumor and a 2025 prediction; no Valve confirmation.
May 5, 2025 PCWorld repeated the playable-state and possible 2025 release claims. Further coverage of the same general rumor, not independent confirmation from Valve.
February 6, 2026 PC Gamer covered a separate claim that the game was done and developers had moved to other work. A reported claim and a sarcastic response from former Valve writer Chet Faliszek, not a confirmed status.
July 10, 2026 ComicBook.com reported McVicker’s newer “almost completed” claim and possible delays from graphical reworks. A more recent rumor, but no reveal or release date and no official confirmation.

The available reports do not establish that “HLX” is Half-Life 3, verify the game’s development stage, or confirm a release date. They also do not prove that Valve is or is not developing the game internally. The careful conclusion is limited: Valve had not officially announced Half-Life 3 in the cited coverage, and the reported claims do not verify a 2026 release.
