Yes—you can run most Windows-only Steam games on a Steam Deck without installing Windows. SteamOS is Linux-based, and Valve’s Proton compatibility layer translates Windows game programs so the Steam client can launch them. Install the game normally, check its Deck compatibility badge, and use Properties > Compatibility to choose a Proton tool when the default does not work. Non-Steam Windows games can also run through Proton, but adding them requires Desktop Mode and more manual configuration.

Success depends on the individual game, its launcher, anti-cheat system, media codecs, and current SteamOS or Proton release. The workflow below shows the safest setup order, how to interpret Valve’s badges, when to change Proton versions, and how to recover when a game refuses to launch.

What is Proton, and why does it run Windows games on Steam Deck?

Proton is software supplied through the Steam client that lets Windows-exclusive games run on Linux. Valve describes it as a tool that allows games exclusive to Windows to run on the Linux operating system. It is built from Wine and additional components, then integrated into Steam Play so the Deck can install Windows game files and start them inside SteamOS.

Normally, you do not install a separate copy of Windows. Steam downloads the game’s Windows files, installs the Proton tool and supporting libraries, and launches the game through that compatibility layer. If a game has a native Linux build that works well, Steam can use that build instead; Proton is not mandatory for native Linux software.

Proton is not an emulator that guarantees identical behavior. It translates Windows graphics, input, audio and system calls while the game is running. A title can therefore launch correctly yet still have a broken launcher, unreadable text, missing video, or online features that fail because of unsupported middleware.

How do I install and launch a Windows game from Steam?

For a game sold through Steam, start with the standard installation. Steam Play provides Proton components for non-native games when compatibility tools are enabled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Update SteamOS. Install any pending system update, then restart the Deck. Starting from a current system avoids troubleshooting a problem that an update already fixed.
  2. Install the game. In Gaming Mode, open the game’s Steam page, choose Install, and select internal storage or a compatible microSD card with enough free space.
  3. Read the Deck badge and notes. Open the game’s compatibility details rather than relying only on the icon. Look for warnings about launchers, text entry, controller layouts, display resolution, or online play.
  4. Launch with the default tool. Steam normally selects a Proton version automatically. Test the first launch with the game’s controller, audio, display scaling and any sign-in or launcher screens.
  5. Change settings only after observing a problem. If performance is poor, lower the graphics preset or individual settings before making advanced Proton changes.

A first launch can take longer while Steam creates a compatibility prefix and prepares shader or library files. Do not assume a failed-looking pause is a crash until the Deck returns to the game page or displays an error.

How do I force a specific Proton version for one game?

Per-game selection is the safest way to test another Proton release because it does not alter every title on the Deck.

  1. Highlight the game in your Steam library.
  2. Open the gear menu and choose Properties.
  3. Select Compatibility in the left column.
  4. Check Force the use of a Specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
  5. Choose a Proton version from the list, close the Properties window, and launch the game again.

Try the latest available Proton version first when a game fails. If the problem began after an update, test another installed version and record which one works with the game’s current release. Proton changes can fix one title while introducing a regression in another, so there is no universally best version.

Can I run a Windows game that is not in my Steam library?

Yes. Valve’s Steam Support documentation confirms that non-Steam games can run through Proton, but the installation path is more manual than a regular Steam purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Switch to Desktop Mode and install the game using its installer or the method supplied by its publisher.
  2. Open the Steam desktop client and choose Add a Game, then Add a Non-Steam Game.
  3. Browse to the game’s launcher or executable and add that shortcut.
  4. Return to the shortcut’s Properties > Compatibility page and check Force the use of a Specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
  5. Select a Proton tool, close Properties, and test the shortcut in Gaming Mode.

Non-Steam launchers may open with no controller navigation, tiny text or missing sign-in controls. Keep a keyboard and mouse available for the first setup, then create a workable controller layout if the game itself does not provide one.

What do the Steam Deck compatibility badges mean?

The badge is a usability forecast, not a permanent guarantee. Valve tests controller access, input prompts, text entry, display behavior, launchers and Proton or middleware support, including anti-cheat compatibility.

Badge Valve’s meaning What you should expect
Verified Works great on Steam Deck out of the box. Full physical-controller access, matching input glyphs, on-screen text entry, readable text, controller-navigable launchers and support for the Deck’s 1280×800 or 1280×720 output are expected. Proton and required middleware must pass Valve’s system checks.
Playable Works, but may require manual tweaking. You may need a community or custom controller layout, touchscreen interaction, keyboard input, a launcher step, or a graphics adjustment.
Unsupported Currently not functional on Deck. Do not expect a reliable setup at the present test point. A future game, Proton or SteamOS update can change the result.
Unknown Valve has not completed compatibility testing. The badge provides no official prediction. Check the detailed Steam notes and recent community reports before installing a large game.

A Playable or Unknown badge does not prove that a game will fail. Conversely, Verified does not freeze behavior forever: a game update, launcher change, driver update, SteamOS release or Proton change can alter compatibility. Read the detailed notes on the game page and compare reports for the exact game version when a result seems inconsistent.

Is a native Linux build better than Proton?

When both choices are available, use the build that delivers the features and reliability you need rather than assuming one format always wins.

Consideration Native Linux build Windows build through Proton
How it runs Executes as Linux software without the Windows compatibility layer. Windows files run through Valve’s Proton layer inside SteamOS.
Launch reliability Can avoid Proton-specific translation issues when the port is maintained. Depends on the game, Proton release, launcher and middleware; a different Proton version may be needed.
Feature completeness May omit features if the port is older or less actively maintained. Often preserves the Windows release’s content, but unsupported anti-cheat, codecs or launchers can remove key functions.
Configuration Usually uses ordinary Steam settings. May require forcing a Proton tool and adjusting controller, display or graphics settings.

If Steam offers a native build that is stable and feature-complete, it can be the simpler choice. If the native port lacks an expansion, multiplayer mode or current updates, the Windows build through Proton may be preferable despite occasional setup work.

Which Proton version should I choose?

Choose the newest available Proton version first, then change versions only in response to a specific game problem. Proton versions are compatibility tools, not quality tiers that can be ranked for every title.

  • New install that will not start: force the latest available Proton tool, restart Steam, and try again.
  • Game broke after an update: test another installed Proton release and note the game version and tool that restored launch.
  • Launcher opens but the game does not: check whether the launcher needs touchscreen or mouse input, then review recent reports for that exact title.
  • Online play fails: verify whether the game’s anti-cheat middleware supports Proton. A graphics change cannot repair an unsupported anti-cheat system.

Keep a short record of the game version, SteamOS version and Proton tool. Compatibility reports are much more useful when they identify those details instead of simply saying that a game “works.”

Why will a Windows game not launch, and what should I try first?

Follow Steam Support’s low-risk sequence before deleting files or installing custom tools. The order isolates common causes while preserving your installation.

  1. Install SteamOS and game updates. Reboot after the system update completes.
  2. Close third-party desktop applications. Background overlays or utilities can interfere with the Steam client or input handling.
  3. Check the Deck rating and compatibility notes. Look specifically for anti-cheat, launcher, codec and controller warnings.
  4. Force the latest available Proton version. Apply it per game through Properties > Compatibility.
  5. Reduce graphics demand. Lower the preset or individual options if the game launches but stutters, overheats the Deck or produces an unstable frame rate.
  6. Compare current community reports. ProtonDB reports are crowdsourced field evidence, not Valve certification. Match the report to the game’s current version and note any Proton tool or launch option it uses.

When a launcher or installer cannot be controlled

Some Windows launchers are not designed for a gamepad. Use Desktop Mode with a keyboard and mouse or the touchscreen to complete sign-in and installation, then return to Gaming Mode. A Playable rating often reflects this kind of manual step rather than a failure of the game itself.

When video or audio is missing

Missing video codecs can leave menus or cutscenes blank even when gameplay starts. Check the title’s compatibility notes and recent reports before changing several settings at once; otherwise you cannot tell which change helped.

When performance is below expectations

Start with the game’s own graphics preset and reduce demanding individual settings. A lower preset cannot solve unsupported online middleware, but it can address a title that exceeds the Deck’s performance or readable-text expectations.

When anti-cheat blocks multiplayer

Valve includes anti-cheat support in its compatibility checks. If the game’s anti-cheat system lacks Proton support, single-player launch may work while protected online modes remain unavailable; changing Proton versions is unlikely to overcome that platform limitation.

Should I use a custom Proton build?

Custom Proton builds are an advanced option, not a first troubleshooting step. A custom tool can be placed in Steam’s compatibilitytools.d directory and then selected from the same per-game Compatibility menu, but managing files in Desktop Mode adds another failure point and makes future troubleshooting harder.

Use the standard Proton versions supplied by Steam while learning a title’s requirements. Consider a custom build only when a current, well-documented game-specific fix requires it, and keep the standard tool available so you can roll back quickly.

How should I expand Steam Deck storage for more Windows games?

Valve says Steam Deck microSD cards use the ext4 filesystem with casefolding, and the Deck can boot an operating system from microSD. For most owners, the practical use is expanding the game library without replacing internal storage.

  • Capacity: choose enough space for the games you actually plan to install, leaving room for updates and compatibility files.
  • Speed: check the card’s advertised speed class and use a reputable seller; counterfeit cards can report capacity they do not really have.
  • Portability: a microSD card can move a library between compatible Deck units, but game updates and first-launch preparation may still be required.
  • Reliability: keep receipts and verify the return policy, especially for high-capacity cards.

Valve also points owners to iFixit for replacement parts and repair guides. That is relevant if storage or another component eventually needs a physical repair rather than a software change.

What should I check before calling a Proton setup successful?

Test the complete experience, not just whether the executable reaches a title screen.

  • Controller buttons produce the correct on-screen prompts.
  • Text is readable at the Deck’s display resolution.
  • Any launcher can be navigated with the available controls.
  • Keyboard or touchscreen text entry works when required.
  • Audio, video playback and cutscenes function.
  • Online sign-in and multiplayer work if the game depends on them.
  • The chosen Proton tool and game version are recorded for future troubleshooting.

Once those checks pass, leave the working Proton selection in place and avoid changing several variables at once. Compatibility is easier to maintain when each adjustment has a clear reason and a known rollback.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I switch Proton versions without reinstalling the game?

Yes. Select a different tool in the game’s Properties > Compatibility menu, then launch again; the existing game files remain installed. Keep the previously working version available so you can switch back if the new tool introduces a regression.

Do ProtonDB reports guarantee that my Deck will run a game?

No. ProtonDB is crowdsourced field evidence rather than an official certification. Reports are most useful when they match your game version, SteamOS release, Proton tool and any launcher or anti-cheat details.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why can a game be marked Verified but still ask me to use the touchscreen?

Compatibility can change after a game, launcher, SteamOS or Proton update, and the badge reflects Valve’s test point. Read the current compatibility notes and report the changed behavior instead of assuming the original badge covers every later build.

Can I keep Windows games on a microSD card and use them in Gaming Mode?

Steam Deck microSD cards use ext4 with casefolding, and games installed there can be selected from Steam like other library locations. Confirm the card’s capacity, speed rating and authenticity before moving a large library.
