Rust’s underwater labs are procedural ocean-floor monuments, so there is no dependable universal room-by-room route. To explore one, locate a lab in your server’s current build, use the access method available there, and scout its own floor map and rooms before committing to puzzles, combat, or loot. Facepunch’s official descriptions explain the original moonpool-and-submarine design, but exact access, puzzle, and loot behavior can change with updates and server settings.
What are underwater labs in Rust?
Facepunch introduced underwater labs as procedural dungeons on the ocean floor. Their shape and size can vary, which means a route that works in one generated lab may not fit another. The original announcement described puzzles, CCTV cameras, and an in-game map showing each floor; treat those as design features documented at launch, not a guarantee that every current server or build exposes them identically. Facepunch’s August 2021 introduction called them “fully procedural dungeons that reside on the ocean floor.”

That variation is the key to using a lab well: explore the layout your server generated rather than following an assumed fixed sequence of rooms. Server configuration and later patches can also affect details.
How do you get into an underwater lab?
Facepunch’s original description presented access through a moonpool, with players resurfacing using a submarine. It also documented a human-sized moonpool addition in September 2021. Those historical descriptions do not establish the number of entrances or every access option available in the current build, so check the specific lab and server rather than assuming one entry arrangement.

Once inside, use whichever planning aids are actually available. The original design included CCTV cameras and a map that shows each floor. Look at the floor plan, identify the rooms and puzzle opportunities present in your generated layout, and choose an exit plan before moving deeper. This is more reliable than expecting a single walkthrough to match every lab.
What should you bring?
Rust’s diving equipment is virtual in-game gear, not real scuba equipment. Facepunch’s diving-update description assigns each item a distinct role: goggles improve underwater visibility, a diving tank provides ten minutes of underwater breathing and can be refilled, flippers improve swimming but slow movement on land, and a wetsuit helps keep the character warm in cold water. The ten-minute figure is the game’s historical item description, not real-world guidance.

Beyond the water-crossing equipment, prepare for the demands of the particular run. Labs were designed with puzzles, and current wiki pages list possible combat-related drops from lab dwellers and crates. That supports planning for navigation, possible NPC encounters, and inventory space; it does not establish a guaranteed enemy placement or a minimum ammunition or armor requirement.
- Bring appropriate in-game gear for the water approach and the access method supported by your current build.
- Leave room for loot and useful items you may find during the run.
- Be ready to make route decisions around the rooms and puzzles actually present.
- Account for possible NPC combat and the risk of encountering other players; do not assume a room is safe because a guide describes it that way.
How to plan a run without a fixed walkthrough
- Confirm the current access: Check how the lab you found can be entered in your server’s build. The moonpool-and-submarine method is documented in Facepunch’s original design, but current alternatives and entrance counts are not established here.
- Scout before committing: Use the available floor map and CCTV cameras if your lab provides them. Note the route, rooms, and potential puzzle areas.
- Choose a route for your goal: Weigh the rooms and loot opportunities against navigation, puzzle costs, possible NPCs, other players, and the difficulty of getting out. The procedural layout makes a flexible plan more useful than memorizing a room order.
- Keep extraction in mind: Decide how you will leave before going deeper, and avoid carrying so much that useful finds become difficult to manage.
What changed after the labs launched?
Facepunch’s 2 September 2021 update recorded several changes: the number of labs on a map was reduced from six to three, minimum lab size was increased, a human-sized moonpool was added, red and blue keycard spawns were removed, and loot crates would no longer spawn while players were nearby. The six-to-three count describes that update, not a confirmed current count for every map or server. The cited notes do not establish whether later updates or server settings changed these mechanics.

These details are useful historical context, especially if an older guide assumes keycards spawn in the labs or cites the original map count. They are not a current patch checklist.
What loot can you expect?
The Rust Wiki’s lab crate and lab-dweller tables list possible drops rather than a promise about any particular run. As listed on the Underwater Labs page, the military-crate table gives 8 scrap at 100% and includes possible components or equipment; the elite-crate table gives 25 scrap at 100% and lists possible higher-tier items. The lab-dweller table includes possible medical syringes, ammunition, and electric fuses. These figures and item possibilities are from the wiki page as accessed for this guide and can change; check the page and current game data before relying on drop odds.
Think of loot as one part of the decision, not a guaranteed payoff. The route, puzzle requirements, exposure to NPCs or other players, and your ability to extract all affect whether a particular run is worthwhile.
