What did the alleged comment say?
The comment appeared beneath Asmongold’s reaction to a LegendaryDrops video titled “Space Marine 2 is a reminder of what we lost.” That video praised the game’s combat, presentation, lore and direct tone. The comment, from a YouTube account using the name MatthewKarch, described Space Marine 2 as a “throwback game” and invoked the simpler shooting loop of Halo as a design inspiration.

As reproduced by PC Gamer, the account wrote: “I hope that games like Space Marine 2 and Wukong are the start of a reversion to a time when games were simply about fun and immersion. I spent some time as Chief Operating Officer at Embracer and I saw games there that made me want to cry with their overblown attempts at messaging or imposing morals on gamers.”
The post thus linked a preference for more straightforward play with a criticism of explicit narrative messaging. It was the account’s characterization of some games, not a documented assessment of particular titles or a company statement from Saber.

Did Matthew Karch confirm he wrote it?
No. Saber declined to confirm the account’s identity. Kotaku quoted the company as saying, “Saber is not commenting on this matter.” PC Gamer also reported that the YouTube account was relatively new and that the company would not verify whether Karch authored the comment.
A LinkedIn account bearing Karch’s name and photo later responded to a post reproducing the remark: “Whoever wrote that seems pretty sharp.” That reads as approval of the sentiment, but it does not say that Karch wrote the YouTube post. PCGamesN likewise reported the apparent endorsement and the lack of direct confirmation.

How did the reaction become a wider debate?
The comment was recirculated on social media around September 16, 2024, and quickly became part of a broader argument about game design and politics. Some online responses celebrated the remarks and connected them to criticism of “woke” games, as PC Gamer reported. Kotaku framed the dispute as a collision between praise for streamlined design and backlash against games perceived to promote progressive values. Those reactions show how the post was interpreted online; they do not establish what players or developers broadly believe.
The debate bundles together questions that are related but not identical:

- A retrospective on gaming history that is a must-own for collectors and fans of video games
- Gameplay complexity: a direct action loop, such as the one the account associated with Halo, versus games with more elaborate systems.
- Narrative approach: entertainment and immersion as primary aims versus stories that make their themes or moral arguments more explicit.
- Intent and interpretation: what a creator says they set out to make versus how commentators read a game’s themes.
These are useful ways to understand the disagreement, not measured categories that prove one kind of game is more enjoyable or more political than another. The alleged comment states a personal design preference; it does not demonstrate that a particular title imposes morals.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why does Warhammer 40,000 complicate the “imposing morals” claim?
Warhammer 40,000 is itself built around political and moral themes: its Imperium is a brutal, authoritarian society in a bleak fictional universe. Kotaku noted the contrast between that setting and the complaint about games imposing morals. PC Gamer also pointed to Games Workshop’s description of the Imperium as a cautionary tale. That context is distinct from the alleged author’s preference for Space Marine 2’s style of play, and it does not settle how players should interpret the game.
A separate comment from Space Marine 2 creative director Oliver Hollis-Leick praised Asmongold’s reaction video. PCGamesN quoted him saying it resonated with the team’s approach and its intentional focus, after four and a half years of work. Hollis-Leick’s remark is separate from the disputed YouTube post and does not resolve who wrote it.
