If your Samsung refrigerator is not making ice, begin with the controls, bucket position and water supply before replacing parts. Confirm that Ice Off is disabled, seat the bucket correctly, verify adequate water flow and run the ice maker’s built-in Test cycle. A successful test can produce the first ice in about three hours, but normal production may take up to 24 hours.
The sequence below separates a disabled or blocked ice maker from low pressure, a restricted filter, freezing problems and a failed component. It also explains when a reset is safe, why manual defrosting can cause damage and when Samsung service is the sensible next step.

Samsung ice makers stop producing ice for a small number of repeatable reasons: ice making is turned off, the bucket is not recognized as installed, ice is piled where the sensor reads full, water flow is restricted, the compartment is not sealing or cooling properly, or the Test cycle does not respond. Work through those causes in order; changing a filter or ordering a motor before checking the controls can leave the real fault untouched.
Start with the control setting
Most Samsung panels show an Ice Off icon when production is disabled. Top-freezer models may show Ice On instead. Family Hub refrigerators and models connected to SmartThings can expose the same setting in the refrigerator manager or app, so check there if the physical panel has no obvious ice button.

On a refrigerator with two ice makers, one control can govern both units. Cycle the control until neither ice-maker icon indicates Ice Off. Panel combinations differ by model and region; if your display does not match these labels, use the manual for the model number on your refrigerator.
How do I check the ice bucket and clear a false full signal?
Remove and reinstall the bucket firmly. It must be fully seated and locked so the refrigerator can recognize it. The bucket should contain ice only. An ice scoop, food package or other object can interfere with the level sensor and make the refrigerator stop as if the bucket were full.
Correct the bucket orientation
Dual cubed and Ice Bites systems can require a particular direction. Place the bucket with the scoop holder toward the front of the freezer, then push it into the rails until it locks. If cubes have formed a mound at one end, level them by dispensing or shifting the ice. Samsung’s guidance lists approximately 2 pounds as the capacity at which production stops.
Look for clumps, slush and frost
Clumped or slushy ice can block the outlet and also trip a full-bucket condition. Break up loose clumps by dispensing what will come out and remove the bucket only if it slides out normally. Frost on the bucket or in the freezer indicates that the compartment needs attention; do not force a frozen bucket.
Could temperature, the door seal or leveling be stopping ice production?
Yes. A refrigerator-compartment ice maker depends on its bucket being fully seated, while a freezer-compartment unit depends on the freezer door closing and sealing correctly. Inspect the gasket for gaps, packages that prevent closure and heavy frost around the opening. Keep both doors closed during recovery; warm air and repeated opening slow freezing.

Samsung also advises that the refrigerator be level so water can flow correctly. If the cabinet rocks or has recently been moved, adjust its leveling feet according to the model manual before diagnosing a valve or motor. Frost, a poor seal or an out-of-level cabinet can make a mechanically sound ice maker appear defective.

How can I tell whether water pressure or the filter is the problem?
Water flow is the main diagnostic branch after the controls and bucket. Open the household shutoff valve fully and inspect the refrigerator’s supply tube for kinks or crushing. Samsung specifies at least 20 psi of refrigerator water pressure.
Measure dispenser flow
On models with a water dispenser, place a measuring cup under the outlet and dispense 6 ounces (three-quarters of a cup). Samsung’s target is that volume in less than 10 seconds. A noticeably slower stream points to restricted flow even if a small amount of water still reaches the ice tray.
Test with the filter removed
Run the same flow test with the filter removed, following the refrigerator manual if a bypass plug is required. If flow meets the target without the filter but fails with it installed, the cartridge is restricted, expired or not seated correctly. Replace it and repeat the test. Samsung rates its filters at about 300 gallons, or roughly six months for an average household; actual life depends on water quality and use.
If the test fails both with and without the filter, the supply pressure may be too low for the refrigerator. Reverse-osmosis systems can also deliver insufficient pressure. Correct the plumbing or pressure problem before replacing the ice maker. Small or shattered cubes are commonly associated with this low-flow condition.

How do I reset a Samsung ice maker with the Test button?
Samsung ice makers include a built-in Test button. The button may be on the side, bottom or front edge of the ice-maker housing, and the bucket often has to be removed to reach it. Do not press random panel combinations when a physical Test button is available.
- Remove the bucket if the model requires it. Set it aside without forcing it. If it will not release normally, consult the model manual rather than prying it loose.
- Press and hold Test. Keep holding for up to 10 seconds. A chime, tray movement or another audible response confirms that the test has started.
- Allow the cycle to finish. A refrigerator-compartment ice maker can take about six minutes; a freezer-compartment unit can take about 30 seconds. Near the end, the water valve should hum and send water into the tray.
- Restore power only if there is no response. Unplug the refrigerator or switch off its breaker for two minutes, restore power and try the Test button once more.
- Interpret the result. No chime or movement after the power cycle, or repeated chimes without a normal cycle, indicates that the unit needs service rather than another reset attempt.
A test that fills the tray demonstrates that the control, motor and valve can operate at that moment; it does not instantly refill the bucket. Continue with the recovery interval before judging production.
How long should a Samsung ice maker take to make ice after a reset?
Samsung states that ice should begin returning about three hours after a successful test, while normal production can take up to 24 hours. Refrigerator-compartment makers may produce one tray every 45–65 minutes; freezer-compartment makers may take about 85 minutes per tray. These are manufacturer guidance figures, not a guarantee for every model, room temperature or load.
Keep the doors closed as much as practical during this period. Power Freeze can shorten recovery time on models that provide it, but it cannot correct low water pressure, a failed valve or a nonresponsive Test cycle. Dispense ice occasionally so a pile does not trigger the full-bucket sensor again.
What do different ice symptoms mean?

Can I manually defrost a Samsung ice maker?
No. Samsung specifically warns: Do not attempt to defrost your ice maker, as this may damage the ice maker. Do not use a hair dryer, heat gun, knife or other tool, and do not pour hot water into the assembly. Heat can damage plastic parts, wiring and sensors, while forced removal can crack the bucket or housing.

If frost is severe, correct the underlying door-seal, temperature or airflow problem and follow the model manual’s approved procedure. A bucket that cannot be removed easily is a reason to stop and seek model-specific instructions, not to apply force.
When should I stop troubleshooting and call for Samsung refrigerator repair?
Arrange service when the Test cycle still gives no chime or movement after a two-minute power cycle, when it produces repeated chimes without completing, when an error code returns, or when no ice appears after the manufacturer’s recovery window despite passing water-flow and bucket checks. A technician can test the ice-maker motor, water valve, sensor, wiring harness and control board—parts that a filter change cannot repair.
If an error code appears after power is restored, record the exact code and consult Samsung’s refrigerator error-code guide or service center. Tell the technician whether the dispenser passed the 6-ounce test, whether the filter was removed during testing and whether the Test button moved the tray. Those observations narrow the fault without repeated resets.

A replacement filter is appropriate only when the flow test improves with the old cartridge removed or the cartridge is due for replacement. Samsung identifies the HAF-CIN replacement cartridge as DA29-00020B and lists compatibility with the DA97-08006A-B system. Match the cartridge number and the refrigerator’s complete model number before ordering; similar-looking filters are not automatically interchangeable.
An OEM cartridge or a parts retailer can supply the correct replacement, but a filter cannot fix a failed motor, sensor, valve, wiring harness or unresponsive Test cycle. After installation, seat the cartridge fully, run the water-flow check again and discard water according to the filter and refrigerator instructions before evaluating ice quality.

What is the safest troubleshooting order for a Samsung ice maker?
Use this decision path to avoid replacing parts unnecessarily:
- Controls: confirm Ice Off is disabled in the panel, Family Hub or SmartThings refrigerator manager.
- Bucket: reinstall it until locked, remove non-ice objects, correct the orientation and level any pile.
- Cooling and cabinet: check door closure, seals, frost and refrigerator leveling.
- Water: open the valve, straighten the line and measure 6 ounces in under 10 seconds; verify at least 20 psi where pressure can be measured.
- Filter: repeat the flow test without the filter. Replace the cartridge only if flow improves or the filter has reached its service life.
- Test cycle: hold Test for up to 10 seconds, observe the chime and tray movement, and allow the cycle to finish.
- Recovery: wait about three hours for initial ice and up to 24 hours for normal production, keeping doors closed and using Power Freeze if available.
- Service: escalate for no response, repeated chimes, recurring error codes, damaged parts or no production after the full recovery period.
This order distinguishes a correctable setting or supply restriction from a component failure. It also preserves the ice maker and bucket by avoiding unsafe defrosting and forced removal.

Why does my Samsung ice maker make a humming sound but no ice?
The hum can be the water valve or the ice-maker motor, so sound alone does not identify the failed part. Measure dispenser flow, run the Test cycle and check whether water actually enters the tray; a technician is needed if the valve hums without filling or the test never moves the tray.
Will Power Freeze fix a Samsung ice maker that stopped overnight?
Power Freeze can accelerate freezing during recovery, but it does not repair a disabled control, blocked bucket, restricted filter, low-pressure supply or failed Test cycle. Use it only after those checks and while the doors remain properly sealed.
Can I install any filter that looks like a Samsung cartridge?
