Yes—gaming PC memory is at meaningful risk of another double-digit price increase in 2027, but Samsung has not announced that 80% figure itself. KB Securities estimates, reported by VLSI Korea and PC Gamer, say roughly 80% of Samsung Electronics’ 2027 memory output is already covered by long-term contracts. Samsung’s July 30, 2026 earnings call confirms the underlying trend: AI customers are providing multiyear forecasts, requesting guaranteed supply, and signing 2027 agreements while the company expects supply to remain constrained. That does not translate directly into an identical increase for a retail DDR5 kit. HBM, server DRAM, enterprise SSDs and desktop DDR5 use different products and contracts. It does mean AI infrastructure is competing for manufacturing capacity, leaving gamers exposed to higher prices, reduced capacities in prebuilt systems and less predictable availability.
Is Samsung really sold out of 80% of its 2027 memory?
The 80% figure is an analyst estimate, not Samsung guidance or a published order book. KB Securities estimated that about 80% of Samsung’s 2027 memory output is secured by long-term contracts, according to VLSI Korea and PC Gamer. Samsung said on its July 30, 2026 earnings call that customers are sharing medium- to long-term AI demand forecasts, asking for multiyear supply agreements and signing 2027 HBM supply deals; executive Jaejune Kim also said industry supply should remain constrained next year.

The estimate covers Samsung’s overall memory output, not the stock of consumer DIMMs in stores. It also does not mean every Samsung fab is producing one memory type or that all remaining capacity has disappeared. Contracted volume can include different products, regions and delivery schedules, while retail pricing depends on distributors’ inventories and each module maker’s agreements.
What do the reported percentages and forecasts actually measure?
These figures describe different memory products, time periods and contract types. They should not be combined into a single forecast for the price of a gaming PC’s DDR5 kit.

HBM is the high-bandwidth memory stacked beside AI accelerators. Server DRAM, ECC RDIMM, enterprise SSDs and consumer DDR5 have different electrical designs, packaging and qualification requirements. A 100% HBM contract-coverage estimate therefore signals intense demand for AI hardware, not a guaranteed 100% increase in desktop RAM.
Why are AI data centers tightening memory supply?
Training and serving frontier AI models require accelerators with large pools of HBM, plus servers populated with high-capacity DRAM and fast storage. IDC says manufacturers are reallocating wafer capacity toward HBM, high-capacity DDR5, server DRAM and enterprise SSDs rather than consumer electronics. That strategic shift limits how quickly ordinary PC-module supply can grow even when total memory production rises.

TrendForce forecasts cloud-provider capital expenditure to rise 98% year over year in 2026 and another 50% in 2027, with DRAM and NAND reaching 68% of 2027 spending. Samsung says AI developers are approaching it directly with multiyear demand forecasts; Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra likewise said a large part of its 2027 HBM volume was already sold and that prices were much higher than in 2026.
Gartner analyst Rajeev Rajput described the result as “memflation” that could destroy or delay non-AI demand into 2028. Gartner expects meaningful pricing relief only in late 2027, while Samsung and Micron have described tight conditions extending through 2028. Those are competing outlooks, so a late-2027 improvement is a scenario, not a scheduled correction.
Will HBM price increases make desktop DDR5 more expensive?
They can create upward pressure, but the pass-through is indirect and uneven. HBM competes for manufacturing capacity and advanced packaging, while DDR5 modules use different components and are sold through separate channels. The retail result depends on wafer allocation, inventory, module density, supplier contracts, exchange rates and how much demand PC builders generate.
IDC has already reported that PC makers are signaling 15%–20% price increases and contract resets as memory costs intensify. Ars Technica reports that buyers are seeing higher prebuilt-PC prices and, in some configurations, less RAM for the money. Those observations support a risk of double-digit consumer increases, not a fixed percentage for every 16GB or 32GB kit.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsShould you buy DDR5 RAM now or wait?
Buy based on your system’s actual requirement and your tolerance for price risk. Waiting could help if supply loosens in late 2027, but the available evidence also supports continued tightness through 2028.
Buy sooner when capacity is already limiting you
- Upgrade if games stutter because the system is paging to storage, or if normal multitasking regularly exhausts installed memory.
- For a new gaming build, price the required capacity with the rest of the system rather than assuming a later upgrade will be cheaper.
- Prefer a matched kit listed for your motherboard and processor platform. Mixing unrelated kits can force lower speeds or manual troubleshooting.
Waiting is reasonable when your current system is adequate
- If current games run smoothly and memory use stays below your installed capacity, the benefit of buying today is mainly protection against future price rises.
- Track the exact kit, capacity and speed you need. A lower price on a slower or incompatible module is not a real saving.
- Set a purchase threshold instead of trying to predict the market’s exact bottom; no source has published confirmed 2027 retail DDR5 contract prices.
Do not buy HBM or server memory for a desktop
HBM is integrated with accelerator packages, and ECC RDIMM server memory requires platform support that ordinary gaming motherboards do not provide. A server SSD or registered DIMM is not a substitute for a consumer DDR5 UDIMM simply because both are described as “memory” in market reports.
How should gamers plan capacity and compatibility?
Start with the platform’s supported memory type, slot count and maximum capacity. Check the motherboard manual and processor specifications before ordering, then select a kit that matches the board’s approved generation and form factor. Capacity should reflect the games you play, streaming or creation software you run, and how long you expect to keep the system; buying a larger kit can be sensible when replacement prices are rising, but unused capacity has no frame-rate benefit.

Both responses are possible. IDC says Lenovo, Dell, HP, Acer and ASUS have signaled 15%–20% hikes and contract resets as costs rise. System builders can also preserve a headline price by shipping a lower memory configuration, shifting an upgrade cost to the buyer. Compare the complete specification—capacity, number of modules, memory generation and upgradeable slots—rather than comparing only a prebuilt’s starting price.
What could make RAM prices fall again?
Relief would require a combination of weaker AI-server orders, additional wafer and packaging capacity, and inventory rebuilding in consumer channels. Gartner’s late-2027 relief scenario assumes that kind of rebalancing, but Samsung and Micron’s statements indicate that AI demand may keep priority access to supply. Until contract prices and production plans are disclosed, the prudent assumption for a gaming upgrade is volatility rather than a guaranteed crash or a guaranteed doubling.
What does this mean for a gaming-PC budget?
Memory should be treated as a separate price-risk line in the build. A graphics-card discount can be erased if a prebuilt quietly drops capacity or if a later RAM upgrade costs more than expected. Lock in the capacity your games need, leave room in the motherboard for expansion where possible, and compare complete systems on equivalent memory—not just the processor and GPU headline.
Frequently Asked Questions
How can I tell whether a RAM price increase is temporary?
Watch the same capacity, speed and module count over several weeks rather than comparing different kits. Retail prices can move when a distributor sells old inventory, so one unusually cheap listing does not establish a market trend.
Can I use laptop memory in a desktop gaming PC?
Usually no. Laptops generally use compact SO-DIMMs, while desktop boards use full-size UDIMMs; the notch, electrical layout and firmware support differ even when both are labeled DDR5.
Does more RAM increase game frame rates?
Only when the existing capacity is restricting the game or other software. Once the system has enough memory, adding capacity normally improves headroom and reduces paging rather than producing a proportional increase in average frames per second.
Why are NAND forecasts relevant to a gaming PC if I only need RAM?
NAND is the flash memory used in SSDs, not system DRAM. The two markets are distinct, but both compete for manufacturer investment and affect the total cost of a gaming build through storage pricing.
